I love my ring hilted longsword. I've ordered the complex hilted sidesword. Can't wait.

Want one! The V4 Sabre looks good too.

I have the V3. You can get quite good tip speed with these, in the summer I like to go outside and practice cutting branches/tall weeds. Also if you flip the sword around so the knucklebow is out of the way and shift your grip up to the ricasso you can use it as a hand and a half sword.

I've used a blackfencer broadsword in the past and found the steel on the handle to be a bit soft. The hand guard gradually got beaten in when it was paired with another blackfencer. This was a year old sword though.

That is the reality with basket hilts generally, original and reproduction. It is a fact of their nature, having so many smaller bars to complete their structure. It's very difficult to make them stronger without compromising the handling. Both my Darkwood and Armourclass basket hilts both did the same, and have required regular hammering out and the odd weld repair.

Could you please review the black fencer Bayonet musket

Any opinion on their complex hilt variations?

Whay are your thoughts on purple heart armoury? I recently purchased the synthetic falcata and I absolutely love it minus the paracord grip. if you haven't heard of them I would check them out

I haven't had any of their swords so hard to say. I have had sickles from them, and bayonet trainers. We don't buy from them simply because they work out at double the price as Black Fencer, so it makes no sense for us. For those in the US they make a lot of sense though, and I have heard good things.

Thank you very much - can't wait seeing it in action. How long did it take till it was delivered?
@Fiddepik7 жыл бұрын
the delivery is at 8-10 weeks at the moment if you live inside the EU.
@onlyfence-frankwalter79137 жыл бұрын
Yeah - thats whats writen on the homepage - but I wanted to know how long it realy took in this case. So it would be helpful to get some data.
@Fiddepik7 жыл бұрын
i waited around 8-9 weeks to recieve my montante waster that i ordered last february. you can be lucky to have shorter waittimes if it's some of the items they sell a lot of (arming swords, longswords?) but honestly, it''s still a shorter wait than any steel sword, and it's a cheaper alternative for someone new or someone who wants to train a new weapon without busting the wallet.
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing7 жыл бұрын
This order took 9 weeks from order to delivery, It was for about 15 swords. They are reliable, the longest we have ever waited is about 14-15 weeks when new products have been developed etc. I know they are ramping up production to get times down, so the trend is certainly towards faster delivery times. Everything we ordered in 2016 came in less than 10 weeks.

Do you think the side ring provides much hand protection? I'm learning to use this sword with a small buckler in Bolognese sword and buckler classes. This sword is a little bulky in the rings and such but does fit the Red Dragon gloves easily.
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing7 жыл бұрын
Not much at all really. The way I see it is that it's principal role is to provide structural integrity to the rings that rise up from the ricasso.

ok - thanks

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me answer these questions: -What do you think about sparring synthetic vs steel? -I'm having an "espada culhona" type sword made. More specifically one from the very end of the XVth century. Essencially it's half way between an arming sword and a side sword. What treatises do you think I sould be studying in order to have an optimised technique? I don't have much knowledge about one handed swords' techniques, the only one I know about is I33, but I guess it is too ancient to be relevant. -On the sword you have like on the sword I'm having made, there are not only finger rings, but also a forward side ring (only on one side). Is that just to add protection? Then why not have two side rings? Martim
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't use synthetic against steel, except in the case of steel rapiers, as less striking power to damage the synthetic material. I would use something like Marozzo, it's close enough, and is designed for a range of swords from a fairly simple arming sword up to a complex hilted sidesword. The ring, I think more than anything the reason is structural integrity, and having a bar both sides would not be needed for that. Additionally it is very common to have more protection on the outside of the guard than the inside, as the outside is more important, and in terms of comfort when it is worn on your side, anything on the inside can be uncomfortable and get in the way.

Somewhat unrelated question: if I were to get a sword as close to a sidesword as possible(for bolognese fencing), and my only options were the Windlass Munich cut & thrust and the Windlass Christus Imperat rapier, which one should I get?
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing7 жыл бұрын
Windlass aren't well suited to fencing. They are usually overweight, or overly flexible, and rarely do well durability wise long term. They also cost a lot more in the UK, so nobody realty bothers, but I understand why people buy them at the much lower US prices. The Munich is a bit monstrous, excessively heavy in the tip due to too little profile and distal taper compared to the originals it was based on. I haven't handled the Christus, the specification would suggest it is ok. Based on what I know of Windlass though, I'd say the Hanwei practical 37 rapier is a better cheap entry model for the same job, or save up for something better.
@Dancorg7 жыл бұрын
I see, problem is my birthday is getting close and Hanwei's are rarely available :). Also I wouldn't be using the rapier for cutting (much) but mostly for solo practice so durability wise it should be ok, I guess. Anyway, I'll keep looking for alternatives, thanks!

Okay well my other recommendation would be this from Darkwood. It is cheap, robust, handles well and is usually in stock or made and shipped in a couple of weeks. It is all round a really good training sword. www.darkwoodarmory.com/?main_page=product_info&products_id=366

Huh, that's actually quite what I was looking for, thanks!

The Destreza is probably the best side sword budget steel in North America.

Hi, do you know good training swords for the late 15th century? Are there any recommendations?
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing7 жыл бұрын
Both plain open hilt cruciform swords and a range of more developed hilts were popular. The Peter Regenyei model below is a good steel option. Black Fencer would easily make you something like it too. One-handed sword for Italian School V. www.regenyei.com/en_sideswords_standard.php

Has Blackfencer finally redesigned their hideous crossguards? I always thought the quillons sticking out of the blade looked really bad.
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing7 жыл бұрын
All models now have guards that slid onto the blade rather than pass through it, as is traditional. I agree they look a lot better, but it never bothered me too much before. What was important was that they were strong, handled well, and were good training swords for a low price.

It'd be better though if South Coast Swords would FUCKING RESTOCK!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO MUCH RAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@lordmorgoth77 жыл бұрын
Orion Melton south coast distribute in the us?
@orionmelton32267 жыл бұрын
Marco Antonio Lea Plaza Soruco Yes. They are a Californian company. I haven't bought a thing there because they've been out of pretty much everything. Purple Heart Armory usually works fairly well, but they don't have sideswords. The only HEMA club close to me is a Spanish one, and rapier, montante, and sidesword are some of the only things I've seen mentioned on their Facebook page.
@leelundkim40697 жыл бұрын
I'm with you! It's frustrating seeing models on Blackfencer's site for almost a year, but being unable to purchase them because their distributor won't get on the ball! It's weird wanting to spend a few hundred bucks and not being able to. Haha

I enjoy the content of your videos but the sound volume is always much, much, much too low. The only time I can ever hear what you are saying is if I watch in the middle of the night when it is very quiet. Even then, I have the volume all the way up. When there is any other noise going on in my background, I usually give up trying to hear what you have to say.
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing7 жыл бұрын
You might need to check your settings, as I have tested them on phones, laptops, macs, PC's, all absolutely fine. I have them at half volume and its perfect.

WHY WONT SOUTH COAST SWORDS RESTOCK THEIR STUFF... GRRRRRRRRRRRRR (they are the main US Supplier) People are literally willing to throw money at them but they NEVER have the sidesword's (or a lot) of their items in stock.
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing6 жыл бұрын
That's a shame. Can't you order direct with Black Fencer? We do. I am sure any shipping and duties cost would be more than made up for by cutting out the re-seller, especially if you bought a quantity of them.
@Valscorn016 жыл бұрын
I have emailed them about buying directly. Myself and most people at my club are more then willing to pay for the shipping costs. Still waiting on my reply!. EDIT: I GOT A RESPONSE. PEOPLE IN THE US. AS OF 12/7/2017 www.southcoastswords.com recently got a new shipment in, according to blackfencer. NOW IS THE TIME to grab one lol. Also have you tried any of their rapiers yet? It seems super interesting that someone finally made a synthetic one.
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing6 жыл бұрын
That is good news. Yes I have both the cup and swept hilts from them with the long blades. They are really, really good. I reviewed them here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jcihjKWSvtLdh3U.html

The real issue is that In the US, Blackfencer does ALL of their business through southcoatswords, exclusively, who quite frankly, are terrible at keeping things in stock or updating their website when things do come in. Their stuff is popular and they need to be ordering way more inventory then they currently do.

Was Blackfencer willing to work with your club directly?
