"What started as every employee's worst nightmare had a pretty happy ending for Walter Carr, 20, a college student from Alabama.
The night before Carr's first day on the job, his 2003 Nissan Altima broke down.
He called his friends and his girlfriend to try to get a ride, but nothing worked out. He checked his GPS and saw that without a car it would take him about 7 hours to get from his house in Homewood, Alabama, to the town of Pelham for his first day at Bellhops moving company.
He decided to walk.
Carr started his 20-mile trek sometime around midnight.
"I wanted to be there before 8," he said. "I wanted to beat the crew members there to let the company know how dedicated I am."
He made it about 14 miles to Pelham when police officers stopped him on the side of the road around 4 a.m.
"He was like, 'Where are you going?' and I was like, 'It’s hard to believe, it’s going to sound real crazy, but I’m actually headed to work.'" Carr said.
When they heard his story, the officers decided to take him to breakfast at Whataburger and made sure he got something for lunch, too."

Wow. This story brought tears to my eyes. It reminds me of my story. I was raped at 16 and kept my baby & had to drop out of school to support my kid alone. I finally got into Ged class during the day and walked to Night school because I wanted to be a nurse. I graduated from both and a car was donated to me by some nice people from my community. Today Im still a nurse and my kid is 28 years old, married and is a Navy Seal in the US Military.

The day they downgrade me to a lower level, off to work he went. This guy will work 14 hours a day. His father was the same way!! My son is right behind him! Not sure why they think all black men dont work.

Gotta admit black people do their best to portray themselves as bad on TV with gangs and glorified negativity in music. Try watching and listening to something you have a preset view on for a year. You will be surprise how your view on it gradually changes if it was different or if you knew nothing about it.

@@MuthaTucker-ss1ee No, it doesn't. There's absolutely NO reason for treating people wrong. I'm white, so I can't say that I know how it must feel to be racial profiled, but I can say, that I'm so sorry for all the injustice, that has been done. I live in Europe and many european countries has colonized huge parts of the world and abused the native citizens. It doesn't help, just to say "I'm sorry", but acknowledging and working towards justice and freedom for everybody is a start - even though it's been a really slow one.

I guess I am going to be a troll. Everyone in the story was great, but the story itself, I believe, shows everything that is wrong in America today. This situation should never have come up. In the 1920s, it seems you could go on intra-city transit from New York to Chicago. This was when we had 100,000,000 and cars were starting to be ubiquitous. Long distance trains were dominate for traveling across country and interstate roads were just starting to be planned and developed. Today our car dependence it seems is a blind spot. We have to bring down carbon emissions. We have known this for a long time. But a man can't go 20 miles to work without a car. Electric cars with limited range will not allow us to keep the mobility we have come to unthinkingly depend on. City and Regional Buses, in many areas, don't even run on Sundays. All those church going people must have reliable cars. We have three times as many people as we had in the 1920s, but a minimal long distance train system, and no nodal-short distance mass transit system to tie cities and regions together. Our rural mass transit systems are also minimal to non-existent. We have had Rails-to-Trails for almost 30 years, with its recent expansion in Vermont being seen as a "win". It took a long time to transition from a horse&buggy and train system to a car dependent system. When will we get started with the transition we need to ensure the future after 2050? This story shows that we don't think we can do any better. Starting in the 1840s America lead the transition to the mass transit rail system that brought us into the modern age. We are doing nothing now.

If they are mentioned, that's usually as far as it goes. This lady, that was the one moving, took it a bit further. She even started a, "Go Fund Me" for him. Andrew Stewart, I'm firm (woke), but fair. Well played by those cops. They really quarterbacked this entire play. I believe this would happen more when we get private prisons out of government, so that cops can do as much community building as they do making quotas for private prisons. So are these female soldiers, and gay soldiers, and transgender soldiers, "terrorizing half the world for Imperial America," too? Brett Hazelton "it's only 20 miles" "takes about 4 hours" uhhh, he was _walking,_ not running a marathon. You can't do a 12-minute mile at human walking speed, and you're talking 20 12-minute miles back-to-back-to-back. Your 2.5 miles daily might seem like nothing much, but I'm willing to bet you don't get those 2.5 miles walked in 30 minutes. There's also a pretty big difference between 2.5 miles and 20 miles. An entire order of magnitude, in fact. Point of reference, the 15k march you do toward the end of Army basic training takes about 3-4 hours. 15k is just shy of 10 miles. So 20 miles = 6~8 hours. There's a reason the dude got up and started walking at _midnight_ for a job that presumably starts at a reasonable, post-sunrise hour of the day.

Walter is a man of integrity. As a former Homewood, Alabama resident of 34.5 years, this whole story really touches me. When I had to move last July, NONE of the 6 movers had a positive attitude or showed the character Walter had/has. Kudoes to the kind homeowner, the young boss, & the police officers for recognizing a good man & being a positive influence to him. It isn't often a person continues to push forward & doesn't give-up. Whenever he does join the military he will be a fine soldier who will serve America proudly. So in advance may I say to Walter 'thank you for your service.' GOD BLESS.
