The US who was a ally of The Pakistani government so this attack as a escalation by The Habr Gidr and there leader Mohammed Farrah adid and over the next few months more attacks against UN personnel and Somali civilians continued. President Clinton authorized a mission to capture or kill Aidid, the leader of the Habr Gidr and the US military sent a task force not under IN authority by under the authority of US special operations command to hunt for Aidid and the tribes leaders. Little known information about this entire incident, there were Malaysians who were VITAL, to the evacuation of the US soldiers, they've gone down in the annals of Delta and Ranger history, they showed a resolve to save American lives that no other nationals have shown before, the Malays were extremely angry with both US, UN, and Malay command for not letting them go out in force to help(many were held back "for their safety"), they wanted and were prepared to go in with everything they possibly could to save lives. The whole situation is really tragic. During the Civil War, Muhammad Farah Adid sent one of his wives and surviving sons to the United States. Hussein Farrah Aidid became an American Marine and acted as a translator a few months earlier during the first American intervention in Somalia. He was literally translating Somali to English for the Americans, while they were trying to negotiate with his father party/clan. After his father died, he would eventually take over as leader of the clan and party. Life is stranger than fiction

That was a good guess about this having been a setup. There really isn't any proof that I've seen, but it does look that way. The task force had launched several missions prior to this one and they always followed a basic template. Some variation was added but it was basically the same. Several of those missions were dry holes or wrong targets. For example, the Somalis fired mortars from an NGO compound they broke in to and fhe Rangers came to it and other time they were told a UN compound was an enemy compound and they went there, too. They were also being closely watched. The land rose up from the coast where the airport was and so there were countless vantage points to watch from. The task force also flew many false missions to try to keep Aidid's men guessing, but these also angered the other citizens. But they figured out how to tell which flights were real and which weren't. It was also believed that there were some foreigners there coaching Aidid's men and maybe actively fighting. Tactics such as shooting for the tail rotor is one clue, even though just about any RPG hit on a Blackhawk would do to at least make it have to leave the fight. So was this a set up? It very well could have been. If their communications and discipline had been better they could have trapped and wrecked the convoy. That second group that left the airfield, the one with the man with the cast, actually ran into an ambush that did a lot of damage and if the Somalis had not triggered it too early, it could have been very bad. As it was, they had been hoping to bring down a Blackhawk knowing rescuers would go to it. Then they could trap and attack them and the other units that came to get them. This is basically what they did, but as noted, their communications and lack of discipline let them down. 10th Mountain did know the Rangers had gone in and were in trouble. However, they had to take a long way around the outside of the city to get to the airfield because going through the city was impossible. All they had was Humvs and truck like the Rangers, no tanks or armor. That route took time, but they got there sooner than the movie implies. The Humv doors were supposed to be bullet proof but turned out not to be. Many bullets came through them. The Rangers had actually considerd removing the doors before this mission so they could get in and out more easily. Shields were also available for the turret gunners but these were not used for some reason.

The general was stuck between orders from above and his men. He had a bad spot as the orders from above had to work within UN guidelines as well. Believe me if you told that general he had full ability to do whatever he wanted you'd like what happened a lot less and it wouldn't have gone down like this. Like the one guy said it's war. The people don't always understand when folks are trying to help them from their own bullies within (Aidid stealing the rations and supplies) though don't get me wrong we stick our nose into things that we have no business. We created Hussein then took him out when he had nothing to do with what we 9/11 but bad actors in our government wanted opportunity there. We support Saudi bombing in Yemen which is horrible. We do horror and heroics and it's maddening. It would be nice if we were a more civilly engaged population with more control over how our government/military comports itself but we aren't which is what I'd hazard to guess is the same with most countries. Folks just want to work go home raise their kids and enjoy their lives. Just like anyone and most are oblivious to what their government really does completely. But say Afghanistan. I feel that was justified. We asked for Bin Laden to be given over. They said no and we went in. Foolishly trying to stay. Afghani's have been ousting invaders since the 1600's France, Britain, Russia. So trying to build a nation failed for all the corruption and the Taliban had it easy to sweep in especially when trump made a one sided deal with them. reduced our troop strength so going back in was out of the question and released 5k taliban fighters and their leader. It was doomed to failure as every pro American Afghani saw that as a signal to drop things and get out and everything crumbled. We aren't always the good guys. But by far we are not always the bad guys. I fail to see any shining bastions of purity in any government. I mean if our noses weren't in Ukraine right now they would have crumbled and Putin would be moving on the next target which would be NATO and a beginning to WW3. And I'd have to say I don't see folks from around the world clamoring to get into Russia or China. So we have to be doing something right. But we are far from perfect that is a surity. We let MBS chop a dude up in an embassy in Turkey just for criticizing the Prince's mistreatment of his people, and we still support Saudi. We created Bin Ladin by supporting Saudi during the first Iraq war when Bin Ladin had offered his mujihadeen to protect the country and the king went with the Americans as their shield that was an insult that resulted in 9/11. I recommend you watch the movie - Lord of War. The film is from 2005 and is based on the biography of international arms dealer Wiktor Buta. The film's producers used real tanks and Kalashnikovs in the production of the film. Because they were cheaper. And they had to notify NATO headquarters. Because there were so many tanks on the plan that NATO might have thought that a war was starting in Europe again. It's hard to miss 50 tanks next to each other from a satellite. Overall, the film would not have been made without the help of several real arms dealers.

What a powerful movie, I remember this when it happened. We didnt have much 24 hour news or live international coverage then. But one of the US pilots was taken hostage & a video released of him. Their objective is not to claim ownership, but to cause chaos, no central organized government, will result in the ability of Iran to have free roam across the middle east, and Africa. As no one would be able to negotiate any sort of agreement with nations attempting to qualm the fighting, and starvation of the peoples. There are about 6,000 Muslim U.S. soldiers. One of the things about the actual historical event that wasn't mentioned in the movie was that many of the somali fighters were chewing khat, which is a local drug. It made them feel good, almost invincible, got them excited, and reduced their nervousness. This is one of the reasons why they rushed American troops so eagerly, but it also affected their firing accuracy. While the American firepower and training drastically affected how many deaths there were on each side(1000 somali fighters-19 US soldiers) this drug also played a big part.

The US wasn't there for religious or political reasons. Farah the militaristic dictator was seizing food that was donated by UN forces to feed the civilian population during the famine. Farah attacked the food distribution, took the food and weaponized it by only feeding people who would fight for him. The UN realizing the potential millions of innocent civilians who would starve if nothing was done asked the US for help. This operation wasn't for oil, religion, or colonialism, it was purely humanitarian and the US only got involved through request. I criticise a lot of US involvements and wars, but this was purely to help civilians.

The guys in black vest/helmets/knee pads are Delta Force, at this time in US HIstory this unit the Government denied they existed. Basically, the best of the best of the best. They make US Navy Seals look bad supposedly. It's also why many of the actors portraying Delta Force act above authority, even when dealing with higher ranking US Army Ranger Officers. US Army Rangers are already considered an above average unit within the US Military and Delta is way above them. I really love how they take charge regardless of rank as well, you see the Delta men literally doing their job very well even if they have to go over the heads of the US Ranger Officers.

What's funny about the part where they talk about Somalias owing the family of someone they killed camels in recompense for the death, is that Europeans specifically the Anglo Saxons, Germans, and Scandinavian peoles (many of the white American soldiers would in fact be descendants of these cultures ) did the same thing, in old English it was known as Weregild. The US-Military had the possibility to cooperate with the U.N.-Forces at the location but the leadership decided (like most times) that they will do their own thing and will not work as part of an U.N.-sanctioned military force. Before the whole Operation they thought, that it would be an easy mission and that they don't need any help from an mixed up inferior military force. They called for the U.N.-Reinforcements AFTER the whole mess got created. Who knows how this would have been gone if the U.S. Military and the United Nations would have been worked together from the beginning?

I read Mark Bowdens Blackhawk down before the movie was even made. And the craziness of the battle wasn't portrayed in the movie, it was much worse. And as for Colonel McKnights bravery in combat, he did really walk around like that. Several accounts refer to it. As for the Ranger who fell, Todd Blackburn, there was no RPG, he just fell, no one saw how he fell. As for Grimes the RPG magnet by the end of the fight when they got to the stadium he had no pants left, they completely shredded by the multiple RPG blasts, he was essentially naked from waist down. So many other crazy parts to this story it's hard to believe. If it hadn't been for the little birds and Cobras making strafing runs all night the Rangers would have very likely been overrun. There is a part in the (-1:11:51) command pre mission brief that the General mentions how their plan called for further assets (armored vehicles, tanks, AC-130 gunship support...) but higher up command denied the request, hence they ended up in a cluster-f**k without the enough of the right tools to solve all the new problems.
