The Black Hills Central Railroad operates regularly with live steam called the '1880 Train' near Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. The railroad runs between Hill City and Keystone on former CB&Q rails. This route offers its riders a beautiful view of the area, and a sense of what railroading used to be like back in the day. In this steam train video, we start off in Hill City as the locomotive starts its fight up the stiff grade towards Keystone, and really digs in to get the train over the line. You can hear as the steam engine digs in, smokes, and chugs hard to tackle the stiff grade. Leading the way is locomotive 106; this is a 2-6-6-2 type steam engine which was built back in 1926 as Potlatch Lumber Company #24, and came on the property in 2016. After shooting it along the way to Keystone, we'll get a neat view of the engine take on water, get a quick servicing, and run around its train to head back. This is certainly something you don't see everyday, and was a great deal of fun to see!
The line certainly has an old school feel to it with its winding curves, short and stiff grades, and the equipment operating on it. I'm also a fan of the whistle on the 106; it has an old school feel to it!

I was in Hill City in 2019 and was fortunate enough to see a few Black Hills Central Railroad trains from my hotel room window, I wasn’t really into trains back then but I still thought it was cool.

Thanks a lot; the route this takes is pretty neat, and hearing the whistle as it approaches is pretty cool too.

Rode this train back in 2018 on my honeymoon. Was amazing, it has a very throaty chug when it works up hill. Also it burns used car oil.

When I saw the thumbnail, I was a little interested. I have never seen that train ever. It looks like the UP’s Big Boy 4014

Thanks for the comment! The locomotive is from the 1920s, but the railroad also goes by the name, 1880s train.
