Dude led one of hell of a life. From slave to warrior to fighting a famous battle before dying for his master. Truly an interesting man.

@arbetor12
@arbetor12 Жыл бұрын
@@Adam-lw5mr it's theorised by Thomas Lockley that he was a slave as a child and used a military slave before earning his freedom by Italian Jesuit missionary Valignano and became his bodyguard as they travelled to Japan to spread western religious beliefs. Both of which (slavering of african americans and spreading western reglions) were common practices at the time He was also likely a slave of the Portuguese captain sailing the ship to Japan, according to Histoire ecclésiastique des isles et royaumes du Japon, written by Jesuit priest François Solier of the Society of Jesus in 1627. Essentially whilst not said, there's several strong possibilities he was a slave at some point in his life.

I am going to praise my country, Brasil. Here we just had Carnival, and every year there are organized parades with different themes, and different samba schools compete with each other to see who makes the best "party". This year one of the samba schools, in São Paulo, made a parade about Yasuke's life. THEY WON. Was beautiful.

What an interesting person. I’ve never heard of him. Having so much contact with so many different cultures in the 1500’s must have been a rare condition. Between African, Japanese, Italian, and Christian culture, he must have been such a worldly man in such an early time.
@fulana_de_tal
@fulana_de_tal Жыл бұрын
At the 1500's we can't really make a distinction between Italians and (West European) Christians, which is most likely the type of christians to take part in this story, but yet, this man was oddly well travelled and cultured for his time

Footnote: We're not entirely sure if Yasuke was actually a Samurai. People generally needed to be born into the ranking of Samurai.

We're also unsure of his ending. While the story told in the short seems to be the most believed, most people say that he was not sold back to the christians but stripped of his sword and armor and left to roam Japan like a ronin (which at the time was basically being homeless and poor). Other say he became a pirate, which sounds metal AF.

It's crazy how throughout history black people are always seen as some type of animal or fetish when all we've ever been was people, humans just like the next. Yet we have to seemingly prove ourselves in every instance
@sanityssakearts1416
@sanityssakearts1416 Жыл бұрын
It is rather odd. People are weird when it comes to new or different things or people. The Indigenous tribes of the Americas used to dye the skin and hair of captured Europeans using black walnut juice so they'd blend in with the tribe more, even though they were often fascinated by the low pigmentation in eyes, skin, and hair. Other places, like Korea or Japan, light skin is the beauty standard and some people use lightening creams to try and make their skin whiter, while in Canada and the US we're using self tanner to try and make our skin darker. Fun fact: melanin helps to protect against radiation, meaning the darker your skin is the less your risk of skin cancer is. Apparently sun burn risk is also lower, but I've worked with people who burn as much as me while having much darker skin than me, so I'm not sure about that one.

Nobunaga was infamous for giving some weird/offensive nicknames to those around him, Yasuke might be one of the few people lucky enough to have been given a decent name. Some theories say that Yasuke was given a name that was close to his original Mozambican name (because Nobunaga couldn’t really pronounce it right). Also, the average height for men in Sengoku era Japan was about 1.6m while Yasuke might’ve been about 1.83m, making him a literal giant to the masses.
