He did the right thing. If he had slammed on the brakes, the truck could have jackknifed, putting the drivers on the shoulder in grave danger. If I was a cop, I'd get on my speaker and tell him: "Don't even TRY to tap the brakes, pal! You'll just make it worse."

I think in this situation, sand would have been more appropriate. (We don't use salt in Montana. We use sand. The colder it gets, the less effective salt is. Sand, on the other hand, is effective no matter what the temperature is.) www.clickondetroit.com/weather-center/science/when-does-salt-work-and-when-does-it-not

OK, so the usual gaggle shouting the brainless "why didn't you warn anyone" has arrived. This is a completely unreasonable criticism by those who aren't thinking for one minute about what they're expecting me to do. Let's go through several facts about this event: 1.) A Winter Weather Advisory was issued by the National Weather Service for freezing rain and icy roads the night before. This was covered by the media and was in the social media feeds of anyone who follows local news. Every single person on the roads had to walk across an icy sidewalk and driveway, then scrape ice off of their cars that morning to even begin to drive. 2.) The entire region's roads were iced over. It was not just this spot. See: www.riverfronttimes.com/newsblog/2019/02/10/these-videos-show-just-how-crazy-the-ice-was-in-st-louis-today The mainline interstate was also very icy, and I witnessed three accidents there just at that one location. There were accidents happening every half mile. There was no place you could have stood to "warn" people that wasn't also icy, with the extreme risk of actually *causing* an accident (and getting hit) if drivers braked after seeing you - that is, in the unlikely event they *did* see you at all. 3.) As you can see in the video, *three* MODOT plows went down the ramp. They were well aware of the conditions, as were law enforcement and first responders. 4.) I *have* tried warning drivers on site before, and here's what I learned: no one sees you and reacts unless you step into the road in front of them. Then, they slam on their brakes. That's a good way to get yourself killed, and even suggesting that it should be done is going to get people hurt or killed. You think my life is worth risking to prevent ANY of the things that happened in the video? Police have told me not to do this. Are you still not convinced? Contact any police officer, emergency responder, highway patrol worker and tell them what you're telling me. They'll say you're insane for even thinking it. Seriously, find me an official who says anything different and get back to me. I'll go on a live stream, right here on this channel, in front of the world, and talk to them about it. I'll be waiting. Just think about all of this for one second. Police and fire vehicles are often hit by out-of-control drivers. And these are large vehicles with bright flashing lights! You think that a person standing there is going to somehow do a better job? 5.) Here's the Google Maps of this location: www.google.com/maps/place/Mehlville,+MO/@38.5315334,-90.3107945,18.25z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x87d8c814648c6c1d:0x8ece5508d3bed29a!8m2!3d38.5083865!4d-90.3228941 Tell me where you would have put up your signs or where you would have stood to try and warn anyone about this ramp. I've spent 10 years running the icyroadsafety.com web site to try and educate and warn drivers *ahead of time*. It's simply amazing to see how so many expect me to do something as stupid as stand along an icy highway in a futile attempt to stop a couple of fender-benders. Still not convinced after all of that? Let's hear about your experience warning drivers along an icy road. Obviously, since you think this is effective and "the right thing to do", you *must* do this in your neighborhood every time it snows or gets icy, right? No? Why not? Turn your criticisms around to get an idea of how incredibly presumptuous and unreasonable they sound. If that's not enough, contact your local police, fire, EMS or highway patrol official so you can hear it from them, if that's what it takes.

I don't think anyone has EVER advised doing something like this because it causes more harm than good. Not to mention it's not common sense at all. If the goal is to help someone from getting hurt out on these streets, standing there in the middle of a road yelling out so called warnings isn't the resolution!

You absolutely should not pump the brake pedal in a car with ABS. ... In a car with ABS the wheels should never lock in the first place, so pumping the brakes will just make you take longer to stop. In an emergency stop in a car with ABS, you should apply the brake pedal firmly and hold it while the ABS does all the work.

Coming from the east coast to Texas in my pickup and I slid off the road into the middle median. The backside of my truck was sticking onto the road partially and the front wheels were stuck in a drainage ditch for the bridge I had just crossed. A trooper came along and parked behind me with his lights on. He said he'd called for a wrecker, but they were all busy at that time. I couldn't sit in my truck comfortably with it being nose down, so the trooper let me sit in his back seat. This was back in 1976 when cops still had cushioned seats back there. I finally got warm and laid down to rest. He woke me around dawn when the wrecker showed up. Fifteen minutes and $50 dollars later I was thanking the trooper as I cranked my truck to leave. Luckily I was only running behind schedule and had no damage, except to my wallet!

Coming from Minnesota, It looks like regular ice, not black ice. Soon we're going to have "Black ice" videos from Texas. Its so apparent there's ice that everyone is ignoring the clues. Clues being rain/snow and a wet glazed surface. I Don't think people really know what black ice is anymore, and whenever someone has a crash they always blame it on "Black ice" but don't realize they are driving too fast for the conditions. Also conditions appear to be right around 28-35 degrees in the video. too warm for black ice.

JDS John No, that’s definitely black ice. I live in Missouri, around this time the temperature was in the late teens, didn’t get above freezing. You can see the wet texture and how it doesn’t resemble what regular ice looks like. It’s definitely black ice.

First vehicle is an AWD Subaru. Great leasson here...AWD/4WD is meaningless on ice. Slowing down way ahead of time, easing the brakes...that's the key.

I know I’m late but that wasn’t a Subaru nor was it an AWD car. It was a Mazda Protegé, which is only FWD. Your point still stands though - AWD/4WD means nothing if you slide.

Now I live in Minnesota which is relatively not as bad as when I used to live on Oklahoma, where you would get black ice all the time. Never use the brakes on black ice. There should be need for it when you know that it’s black ice and you have to go really slow, also never go on slopes at all.

Chances are the main road was salted or traffic had the ice worn off. Most of these were simply going too fast for conditions.

The bottom line is, a winter advisory was issued ... the night before. Therefore state and city officials had enough time to treat the roads BEFORE and immediately after the precipitation.

If you ever find yourself sliding on ice, don't lock up your brakes. You may not be able to stop, but at least you'll be able to steer and possibly avoid hitting something.

Black ice is the worst. Having bead lock wheels/tires you can air down to a few pounds of air helps some.
