From all the movies I've seen in my entire life, this scene is one of my very favourites. You could think that nothing happens here, but the moment she says his name and everything stops, thats just magic. Also, one sentence is enough to make you understand there is a story behind with Hanzo and Bill that could worth a movie itself, and it's expressed in a couple seconds. I've heard (don't know if true) that sushi is actually bad in Okinawa, that means Hanzo opened his restaurant there so no one would go to see him.

This is legitimately one of the best scenes Tarentino has ever shot. The shifts in tempo and tone are so sudden yet seamless. Jarring but subtle. From when Beatrix ducks under them when they’re arguing, to her attempting to hide the fact that she speaks Japanese fluently... but there’s so much more. Hattori throwing the knife back on the shelf, keying you into his talents. It’s all top notch story telling. The sake bottle breaking in the back when she says that she’s looking for Hatori Hanzo (which tells you that his assistant is really paying attention and genuinely thought she was suspicious). This whole scene tells you SO much without any real exposition. You could write nearly a whole movie about Hatori from this one scene alone. Just a master class. And combined with the next scene... I mean wow. On the whole both Kill Bills, but especially volume 1, are more fun than great. But this 10 minute stretch should go on Q’s career highlight reel.

Three things I love about this scene. 1) Hattori Hanzo is a master class at flirting. 2) When she ducks under his arm, she totally gave herself away but they failed to spot it. Even though she dropped the role at that point. 3) The look on his face when the penny finally drops.

I'm reminded, oddly, of a scene from a Star Trek novel. It tells the story of a master swordsmith who met a man of peace and became ashamed of his life's work of making killing weapons - so much so that he began to buy his swords back and melt them down. The man of peace intervened, telling him that the swords were too beautiful to be destroyed, regardless of their purpose. They were works of art in their own right. I could see Hanzo reaching a similar point in his life, where Bill (and Budd) using his swords as instruments of murder for hire moved him to never make another one. He truly pours his heart into making the sword for Beatrix, as a way of trying to atone for what he sees as his past sins. Beatrix wants a sword from him because she needs one and his are the best. Even so, she is clearly in awe of the beauty of his work. Even Budd is impressed by it, describing it to Elle as "the greatest sword ever made by a man". The sword helps Beatrix survive long enough to face Bill, though it isn't how she ends up killing him.

One of the things I love most about this scene is the choice to have her wear something that was SUPER tourist-y in the early 2000's - not just for Americans, but for Japanese people visiting Okinawa. There's a character in Azumanga Daioh that takes home a similar shirt as a souvenir in an issue published long before the movie came out.

I count 4 racks of 7 swords. Dude keeps 28 swords for "aesthetic and sentimental value" something else I notice, on the window pane he writes on. Look at it compared to the other window panes.
