Have you ever been listening to a normal song and thought, "I really wish this normal song had 280 million notes and took up 1.1 terabytes of data and was literally unplayable on any computer?" Of course, you're only human.
MIDI is a shared language that lets electronic instruments communicate with computers, developed in the early 1980s to provide a technical standard in the burgeoning field of digital music.
MIDI used to sound like this.
Now MIDI is literally at the core of all pop music -- it's how keyboards and laptops and samplers make Katy Perry records. It's how your ring tone works. It's how you use a tiny plastic guitar to play the "Freebird" solo on Expert. It's basically digital music air. It is in everything.
Black MIDI is a sequenced MIDI file so dense with notes, it literally just appears to be jet black. So instead of sounding like this -
It sounds like this -
Uploaded on February 6th, 2011, that piece of hypnotic mayhem from kakakakaito1998 is the first-ever Black MIDI. Although these files were being traded online as early as 2009 in Japan, kakakakaito1998 an original "blacker." Because naturally his subculture has bad-ass lingo.
These songs are created -- or "blacked" as the bad-ass lingo goes -- by initially layering multiple MIDI files on top of each other, shortening the notes, and then presumably offering some sacrifice to the pagan Gods of yore because seriously this shit is insane and no one who does it seems eager to divulge the secret sauce.
The visual side of black MIDI is as mesmerizing as the notes themselves -- of which that song has 7.67 million. There is an element of technical braggadocio and one ups-manship to not only the number of notes, but the presentation. The description of that video is simply "My graphics card has enough memory to run this without invisible notes :D."
Why? Why? Why? Bullet hell.
The most popular blackened MIDIs all originate with the Touhou project, a one-man enterprise that has seen the release of 21 bullet hell games in as many years. The quintessential Japanese shoot 'em ups, Touhou games feature an unending reign of enemy fire and big tunes.
That, for example, is a 2003 Touhou game called Perfect Cherry Blossom. And this is "Necrofantasia," a popular song from Perfect Cherry Blossom.
In fact, the 10 largest black MIDIs, according to the Impossible Music Wiki's leaderboard, are all Touhou project songs. But it's KZfaq so of course someone did "What Does the Fox Say."

My theory on the "secret sauce" is that certain combinations of notes sound exactly like a certain single note. If you use that to create a note out of other notes, and then create those notes out of other notes, and so on, and you can stack seemingly infinite notes into a single sound. It will sound louder and a bit distorted as a side effect.
@Naokarma
@Naokarma 6 жыл бұрын
close, it's that most of the notes are incredibly soft, so that they are purely to add to the note count, or visuals. It's the layering of midi files that's hard
@voidcrypt
@voidcrypt 5 жыл бұрын
I say that the person to write the Black MIDI lowers the pitch of the singular note which they do to the rest of the "design notes"/"placeholder notes" to either add to the note count to make it a tride and true Black MIDI or to make interesting designs.
@uyasey8082
@uyasey8082 5 жыл бұрын
@@voidcrypt Kind of, but not at all. Some people do this and us in the black midi community call them "spammers" that make well.. "spam midis" which are usually normal midis with note art written all over them. They are considered very low quality but alot of black midis have a little bit of art and alot of real blacking that would make the song impossible even if you removed the note art. I suggest you check out HDSQs Channel

+BassApps Sorry man, I'm not following the first sentence; you mean you researched what I said in my comment regarding MIDI? About the rest of what you said, haha yeah, I totally agree. It's something I think about sub/view competition or simply the desire for those that causes a very small percentage of these people to actually be humble anymore. What I mean is that in their desperation to keep people's attention, they are constantly feigning expertise about goddamn _everything_ under the sun. Ok, of course a host trying to sound confident in an effort to appear credible is nothing new, but for fuck's sake, these people take the whole age-old, "meh, screw the people who know enough to call me out because the majority, who's ignorant to the subject's details, will just take my word for it" thing to an ENTIRELY new fucking level. Like I mean to a point where _ton's_ of people are able to listen to them an instantly go, "uhhh nope, that's utter bullshit", and you'd think it'd be too dishonorable or at least embarrassing for the people who run these channels to keep it up...the operative term being _you'd think_. I know the MIDI protocol isn't the most well-known subject, but I assume you know what I'm referring to and that it's done with topics that are _considerably_ more commonplace. Who knows, maybe I'm just bitter, but I just turned 30 so it's not like I'm all that old and I truly believe that this is the sort of thing that falls under the umbrella of "shit that harms the whole scene and not just the offending individual". Sorry for the rant...bottom line, I whole-heartedly agree with ya; you couldn't possibly have used a more suitable word than what you did, "disgrace". EDIT: God fucking _damnit_, does anyone know how to prevent the comment's text field from double-spacing your line-breaks when you just go to leave one space in-between paragraphs? And if you instead hit [enter/return] one time and leave no space, it's not like it still adds one, making the end result two paragraphs separated by one space. It's so freakin' annoying...
@BassappsDeutschland
@BassappsDeutschland 8 жыл бұрын
Ryan Dunlap haha bro you got me wrong. I am way younger than you (no harm intended lol) but I develop MIDI software since I am 18 (basically what my channel is about) and it's always bothered me what people still understand under the term "MIDI". I sometimes need "excuses" for my kind-of-wealth (not saying I am rich but am earning well above the student average) and after telling someone my life story again I actually got "so you mean what the keyboard makes the sounds with? isn't that outdated? my windows XP can do this!" once. Since then I cringe every time someone stains the image of MIDI. I wish I had the time to make a website with simple info charts about what MIDI is, comprehendible for the masses. I think the biggest mistake was, although technically correct, calling MIDI files MIDI files. Technically correct as the file reproduces exactly what a multichannel MIDI output would send to another device, but the problem was that people thought it's an actual sound file, whereas it's just notes. Maybe if Microsoft called their GS synth a bit different or didn't implement a *.mid parser into the WMP but outsource this to a little note editor instead, there wouldn't be as much misconceptions about MIDI that there is right now, but it's too late I guess :/ To that "searched for this comment" thing; I simply hoped someone (except me) would've noticed.

Your secret ingredience: Velocity. MIDI protocol gives each note a 127-step velocity attribute, so all of these notes that make it look so dense and full of information is nothing but barely audible notes.

+triplenippel123 That's what I was thinking. I imagined this would be even more intense than Zappa's "black page'. they both have black as a descriptor for the same reason; the score is so full of notes it turns the page black. But this done with midi files actually sounds less complicated than many 'simple' songs. By shortening all the notes and piling them on top each other, you're actually making less music happen. Like mixing every food item in your kitchen together in the blender; you'll just end up with a bland brown mush.

Yeah MIDI is a protocol used to allow compatibility of music equipment between different manufacturers. Not only is it musical data but time clock data and other things we take for granted today. You can write a song in MIDI, and it can be played on any instrument that's MIDI capable. The author of this video doesn't have a good understanding of MIDI at all...

+Nullll1111 Not always. Yes, "note art" can be and is often added to a MIDI file to add to the visual appeal and increase the note count, but this is never the only thing done to a Black MIDI file, depending on the MIDI note art might not even be used at all. In a proper black midi, additional audio details can and will be added to a song to make it sound chaotic and impossible to play with your real hands on a piano, such as piano smashers (all notes at once), "drum beats" using lower notes, arpeggios, etc. The amount of focus put in to these kind of things depend of style and/or quality of a Black MIDI. A high quality black will respect musical theory to detail when making these blacking decisions.

Ladical, FYI, it seems obvious that you don't know Black MIDI nearly as much as I do. I've been involved in the community for quite some time and I'm even friends with some of the most popular Black MIDI Team members despite not being one myself. What you need to realize is, not all Black MIDI compositions are treated equal, in fact it's quite the opposite; there's a ton of crappy Black MIDIs out there of varying style, but there's a fair share of good Black MIDIs and/or Scores around if you look hard enough (mostly produced by the BMT members themselves).

I think black midi could carry with it some unique ideas for music, but as of right now the blackers are so carried away with getting in notes wherever they can for that extra million. There's also the issue of how many low notes they clump together. If the blackers could stay away from that third left side of the piano roll, 1: the songs would have a lot more head room to work with, and not clip every two seconds, since lower end frequencies will eat up your headroom faster, and 2: it would clean up the track tremendously. Low frequencies don't harmonize very well, and having several just semitones apart makes the whole song unbelievably muddy. I do think black midi is onto something though. The idea of being incomprehensibly complex is what makes the music interesting, and if I wad going to draw inspiration from black midi, that would be it. A slew of notes each with purpose, not just a slew of notes.

Good work on it though, despite of the mistakes I've caught. I am TheTrustedComputer that makes quality black MIDIs. A few should know me. Mistakes 1. Actually, it's 280 billion, not million. 2. The original black MIDI is not from kakakakaito1998. The true original can be traced back in 2009 where a Japanese user on Nico Nico Douga uploaded the first black MIDI in existance. If you have a Nico Nico Douga account you can watch it here: www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm6896044 Else, then here: www.nicozon.net/watch/sm6896044 Sadly the original copied video on KZfaq has been removed since because of the misnamed "Death Waltz". That video was uploaded on KZfaq in 2010. 3. Perfect Cherry Blossom wasn't released in 2013, which was last year, it was released in 2003. The one game that was released in 2013 was Double Dealing Character. 4: Kaito is pronounced like Kitoe in "kite", not Kaytoe like in "okay".

High-Tech-Toaster :] my good sir a program can stop running due to a video, I've had kodi die countless times at the very climax of my visual viewing session. :p Im kinda assuming you're thing was a joke, but I'll answer like it was serious. I like to show I know things if you run out of RAM or are pushing your cpu limit, obviously something stops responding, and if you had a game running in the background with youtube, chances chrome is gonna die first. when you try and close out, especially when you get the close program button and it doesn't close, the video tends to speed up and "rubber band". I'm realizing this is 2 weeks old, your prolly over it, and I'm not making this too funny, I'll stop here
