this is not the future this is now

This is one of my favorite episodes too. I’m surprised no one talks about the connection between the story and KZfaq/content creation. People have made sacrifices to try to have a successful channel. Creators are at the mercy of an algorithm, sponsors, and an audience. At the end, even though Bing is wealthy and living an easier life, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s still surrounded by screens showing an artificial life outside of his room.

People buying shit that’s not even there… people are spending literally $500,000 for a digital house in the “metaverse” and $10,000,000 for a NFT of a monkey… think about that for a second.

As someone in tech, this episode interested me. A few points I'd make. * RFID chips. I didn't assume this. The gesture technology wouldn't likely be aided or rely on RFID chips, but rather cameras and motion sensors in the screens - much as contactless fittings work in public toilets today, or on a more sophisticated level, how gesture functions can work on some consoles. * Electricity generation: It was originally meant to be explicit in the show that the bikes actually do nothing at all, but the riders are unaware of this (or don't even consider it) - a reflection on the "non-jobs" that many people now have in the modern economy - work for the sake of work that really adds nothing or next to nothing to the world. Although this was left more implicit than explicit in the final version that aired, from the first watch I made of this episode I just took it as read that the job of the cyclists is completely meaningless and pointless and their only real function is as mindless consumers, with the bikes existing solely to keep them busy and establish a hierarchy and drive them to compete.
