When I first watched this, the actors were all relatively unknown. It was cool to revisit this episode and recognize them for their future accomplishments. Jessica Brown Findlay who played Abi became the main protagonist in Brave New World, a sci-fi series with a lot of potential cut short after only 1 season. Selma Tese, the woman on TV in this episode played by Hannah John-Kamen was astonishing as Dutch in the 5 seasons of the sci-fi space opera series Killjoys, also acted in Brave New World. And of course Bing, played by Daniel Kaluuya who went on to star in Get Out, Black Panther and Nope.

@@nautilusfiles It is a really fun, goofy series that does not take itself seriously at all, and is all the better for it. Definitely has that Vancouver production feel, but it also suits the show as a low-budget adventure. As a side track, for some reason I can always tell by the look when a show is produced in Vancouver. Too many extras ambling about with no purpose, cramped sound studios, repurposed props. It's not bad, just recognizable. Another example is The Magicians, which I also recommend, at least, the first few seasons. Despite its being a good series, its Vancouver feel does not suit it at all. It's supposed to be set in NYC, and be very New York, but it is so Vancouver that the characters' casual references to NYC areas come off as jarring. "Alice was just in Gowanus? She flew there and then flew back? Oh, right, this is supposed to be New York."

In the first episode right before the Prime Minister enters the room with the pig, he takes a shot and then a sip of water. I always assumed that it was alcohol or some other sedative to calm his nerves. But I just noticed that when he took it, the female staffer immediately says “we’re complying with all the stipulated rules so you’ll have to keep going “ and he appears to be foggy, with sound muffled and those around him in slow motion. This makes me think that what he actually drank was the same compliance drink that was given to the contestants in 15 million merits. I love your channel- looking forward to more Black Mirror & Severance videos.

I know this comment is old but I’m with you. I’ve now seen two and a half episodes, this & the one with Bryce Dallas Howard along with half of one with a couple on vacation uncovering a murder or something. This episode fucked me up enough to not wanna watch more; doesn’t help I was high asf too.

This show depressed tf out of me, this and White Bear were the first ones I watched. I think this was the first one funnily enough. Then my sibling said "Don't worry, White Bear has a good ending" (I did not feel that was a good ending at all, seriously. Just sadistic...). And I was like "Cool I dont think I can keep watching this show" but I ended up watching more with mixed feelings of dread and intrigue and being pressured to haha. Its good but oh god does it leave some part of your soul broken forever. I heard a summary of the episode with the soldiers, including the ending, and I refuse to watch that one. The summary of it alone was so heartbreaking. I think I've seen most of the episodes now. But the first few I watching will always leave me a changed person, not necessarily for the worse or better, but for the more bleak for sure >__>. Thank you for covering Black Mirror, this is right up your alley for sure :) As always, beautiful narration voice, and good explanation of details. Keep it up man

The ending is Charlie Brooker explaining what happened to himself. His origins was as a man ranting against the system while being in it. The job he has at the end is the old job Brooker had before starting black mirror.

Great analysis, as usual 😍. One thing that really hit me about this episode was the way everyone was being force-fed porn. Bing couldn’t even close his eyes when ads for it were on! The two main choices for shows seem to be the objectification and dehumanization of fat people (which you talked about) and of women (which you kinda hinted at). That’s messed up

Interesting analysis. I never considered Bing to be a hypocrite or betray his values and didn't know that this belief was common. For me, Bing's decision to accept the streaming offer was not hypocritical but rather a pragmatic choice in a dystopian society. By securing a platform within the system, he could communicate his message of dissent to a wider audience, potentially inspiring the lower class to awaken to their oppression. His strategic compliance allowed him to navigate the system's constraints while maintaining his authenticity and integrity, as evidenced by his broadcasts and the symbolic shard of glass. The wooden penguin, far from representing a turn for what he lost, symbolized his enduring connection to Abi and his commitment to the cause. Thus, Bing's actions were a calculated attempt to use the system's tools against it, making his acceptance of the offer a win-win situation for Bing and the higher class as he could continue his fight from within.

This was probably the darkest, bleakest and truest episode of Black Mirror of all time. Every other episode of Black Mirror aspired to this episode and failed in my opinion, even the really great episodes. No episode forced you to really sit with yourself like this one. No episode managed to truely stick the landing of their endings either.

I've been trying to find it but haven't been able to understand why relationships never happened in the cycle community? It's not like they didn't have time to kill or if people just aren't allowed in the cells of the others. That wasn't made clear to me in the episode.

I think Swift is jealous of Abi when she's offered the adult actress role, no feeling sorry for her (when she hears how good Abi is singing on the show she is obviously annoyed, as she now knows Abi is pretty AND talented). I also think the female judge sheds a tear at Abi as another bullshit gesture of emotion, she's not actually in a conflict worrying about Abi's future or wellbeing. I also think the 'windows' Bing is looking out of from his new apartment are also screens, the birds looked digital. Nice video and analysis, but I think you could do better brother.
