/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and I'm so excited to talk about what happens in Season 6. The show has returned and for the next week we're gonna be going through every single episode to bring you full ending explained breakdowns. First up is Joan Is Awful which centres around a woman discovering that her entire life has been turned into a quote unquote netflix drama starring none other than Salma Hayek.
This showcases all of her faults, fantasies and it unearths every dirty little secret that she has. They also do a big twist come the end which I'll talk about as we get further into it.
Extremely fourth wall breaking it actually has a number of different Black Mirror and Netflix Easter eggs in it. For the first part of the video I wanna go through what they are and then from here we'll go into most of the plot and it's meaning.
Now the opening when the title itself is revealed in the same font as netflix and we learn that in this universe it's called Streamberry. We see the service being accessed at several points and there's lots of different titles on it.
You can catch Loch Henry: Truth Will Out: which a documentary on episode 2 from this season. There's also Sea of Tranquility: which was the show first brought up in “Nosedive” and later in this season during “Mazey Day.”

I think you're missing something. They got Annie Murphy for this role because of Kevin Can F**K Himself. When her husband (Kevin) is in the room, the show becomes a sitcom, but when he's gone everyone has to live in reality. Bleak, fucked up, clean up his miss reality. They SAID , in Black Mirror, they were trying to make her look awful for ratings even while picking the most middle of America person in the nation..

@@dhj1825 You didn't missing anything. You just didn't process what happened. For "Source" Joan to break the computer, she had to enter the building. Who helped "Source" Joan enter the building? The "Source" Annie "Fucking" Murphy Mona Javadi had told her secretary to get "Source" Annie Murphy kicked out of the building which means "source" Annie Murphy has entered, roamed in the building, helped "source" Joan to break and enter and go to the office of Moan Javadi and the walk into the computer room, and threaten the IT guy which was all illegal. So this makes "Source" Annie Murphy an accomplice. Made sense?

When I like a video it's because I consciously thought that the content was good enough that I wanted to show my appreciation, every channel asking for likes rather than earning it just serves to inflate the value of the like button over time and give an inaccurate representation of what it means for the video to be liked, which is why I actively dislike every video that asks for me to like it because the author wants me to too instead of letting letting me come to my own decision. If you remind someone to like if IF they actually liked it that's fine. Otherwise you are annoying.

It seems that Joan is played as more and more awful as you get deeper into each fictive layer. This suggests real Joan is probably not awful at all. As the Michael Cera character implies, real Joan doesn't live in a fancy house, and we can assume, probably didn't have as good a job as the Annie Murphy Joan. We can assume that real Joan was much kinder to Sandy and less powerful in the firing scene... It makes the whole thing much more disturbing because as Mona says, there's nothing special about her; they could've warped the life of anyone on their streaming service. Maybe real Joan didn't cheat on Krish at all, or even reply to Mac's messages. Stark warnings, indeed.

Up to a point. All those changes would eventually add up and cause to much divergency. For example, if in one level she cheated on her fiancé and in another she didn't, in one they might break up and not in the other. Like the CEO said, the characters might say things in different way for dramatic effect, but the events have to have the same consequences (the same plot points), as not to cause a cascading divergency.
@Nemesisaka

@PiCheZvara
@PiCheZvara Ай бұрын
Interesting and correct thought, but since Annie was the level 1 fictional Joan, it's not possible the stuff with Mac, etc. was just made up. The post-credits scene also shows the Source Joan defecating in the church and it's pretty much the way Annie did it, only with a bit more genuine regret and guilt in her face. So Source Joan no doubt did text Mac, she did meet with him and kiss him, etc., but she did it with less fervor or passion. Source Joan in real life, was making mistakes, she was being, well awful, but not in such a dramatic way. The dramatic way is reflection of how many of us see bad things others do to us, or things we do to others, in our minds and how we then pass those events along to others - usually with added layer of emotions and drama that wasn't necessarily there even if the gist of the story is correct. Some do it more, some less.

It was all pretty contrived, and expected, from my point of view. But I guess it was okay. I like when Salma and Joan started to get back at the company ... but seriously, computer servers (including that quantum computer) would have backups, and offsite backups, and hot/cold/warm site disaster recovery locations to prevent exactly this kind of attack, etc. ... I actually didn’t see Joan as a bad person. I saw her as an incredibly flawed person with very little control in her life, which did lead her to make bad decisions. Joan Is Awful just focused on her worst traits and embellished the mistakes and bad choices that she made in order to make her appear worse than she actually was. Instead of a complex human being, she was portrayed as a black and white caricature of herself, which isn’t too different to how people in social media are viewed when they themselves make bad decisions. Because the public doesn’t care about the complexities of human nature and what leads people to make the choices that they do, they just like the drama.

This episode is a perfect example of social media, but written as a juxtaposition. We all exagerate our lives into these online characters. We feel awful if something we post isn’t up to our standard or if someone isn’t responding to how we’d expect it. We look at ourselves from the online presence first and then reality. We watch our IG stories over and over... We travel to places just so we can show it in our "online character". We are all characters in our online profiles

I think the data harvesting aspect being ignored by the characters is the real point of this episode. It's not really a commentary about Streaming or AI or Simulation, it's about the fact that most of us care about our image first and foremost. They don't care that a corporation has a continuous stream of data about them (enough to create a simulated version!), they care about the presented version of themselves that others can see. The near real-time show on a steaming platform works as a good substitute for social media.

it's actually a commentary on most people today. they would never destroy their phone even if they knew it was spying on them (which it IS btw). also, they're too dumbed down from using their "smart phone" to ever think to disable the app. to them, they just use the phone, and don't even know there is such an option. AI software’s ability to create deep fakes and images these days is craaazzzyy, and uploading yourself on the internet is essentially ‘giving consent’ to have your face used and put on anything.. as many female streamers have seen within the past year. Okay, two things. First, I think Joan still had a case, because her lawyer said Streamberry could take creative liberties with the characters and dialogue. Wouldn't that mean the company that fired her based it off of potentially fictitious hearsay? Is that not libelous? Regardless of her actually discussing the company's info and the fired employee, she could've denied it and if the fired employee said otherwise, it's the word of ex-employee against her own. Second, that image she drew on her forehead reminded me of the Lewis structure for oxygen. It made me remember her e-cig, her panic attack and the place she worked, which seemed very 'pro-green'.

I strongly believe the therapist was a casting agent finding potential matches to get the best engagement. Additionally I’m not totally convinced we saw the “core Joan” in the end, I believe the algorithm decided that giving a redemption arc to the titler character for the finale makes them more relatable. I came to this conclusion as whilst explaining the meta nature of the show we are watching, several characters are required to go “off script” since the core level they wouldn’t be talking about themselves in this manner.

The other day I had a chat with a tech nerd and he was telling me how all the future technologies are aiming towards reaching the singularity. And the more we march towards it the higher the chances of us humans losing control over everything. For example when we sign up for an AI photo app, it clearly says in the terms and conditions that it will use and store the images provided to it in ways we can not even imagine, it presents this to us in a very fancy way that it will enhance our user experience and will make it more easy for us to achieve what we want but in reality we willingly provide permission to them, gradually giving these apps control over us. There was even a hint in the episode "Salma can blow off an Orangutan" about deep fake porn movies all over the internet over which the celebrities have no control.

This episode felt like it was written by a 14-old. There are a million things why this "Plot is Awful" and extremely shallow. 1. Law moment is incredibly brainless, shallow and based on a most basic (and stupid) idea we had (probably when we were 13 or less) that WHAT IF WE DON'T READ WHAT WE SIGN WHEN WE CLICK AGREE?? MAYBE I AGREED TO TRANSFER ALL MY MONEY OR GAVE A PERMISSION TO KILL ME? Literally no, who would even believe that. And they repeated the same narrative with actress character. This would never work, even in theory and no one even has to be a lawyer to notice this. 2. Black Mirror was realistic before with people's reaction on things, I don't think no one would ever just give up if someone used their identity and broke their privacy. Like at least get public attention? 3. Turn ur phone off?? 4. Their explanation on technologies in this episode is shallow as well too(quantum computers, phones listening to what you are saying(and yes that's the whole explanation)) also the ending made no point at all. Old Black Mirror would handle this idea so much better, maybe deepen in the idea of recursiveness, like, are they gonna hire actors forever, make some actors artificially or something else? What am I talking about, maybe try to go deeper into SOMETHING AT LEAST? Literally no established narrative or message, or even something to think about after watching it. Overall it's okay for a typical netflix tv series episode, but for Black Mirror - meh.
@name5876
@name5876 Жыл бұрын
What do you mean by public attention? Isn't her life public enough? Everyone knows it's based on a real person and no one cares, that's the point. Until it's not them, they couldn't care less. Especially when they are brainwashed and made to think the target is really an awful person just like in Running man. Remember that? Also you can't live without all your devices. Even if you get rid of them they can follow you by other devices. That's not the solution, getting rid of snitches and stalkers is the solution.

Great first episode. Better than all of S5 combined. Bleak tech concept. Twists and surprises along the way. Dashes of humour. A big A List celeb to get people on board for the season. Hilarious meta jabs at Netflix itself. Even a positive upbeat ending. Not just solid but pretty darn good. Along with 15 Million Merits, Nosedive, and USS Callister this might be one of the best high concept episodes of the show to introduce newcomers so they get the gist. Just don't show them The National Anthem. I'm still in awe that they decided that would be the opening episode for the entire series to introduce the world to Black Mirror. Ballsy as hell.

My hypothesis: Charlie Brooker made this episode slap-stick-esque, farcical and low brow, because it's a parody of Netflix itself. When we see Joan and Salma, this is not baseline reality. Their behavior is not real, but a result of lazy writing within the universe of Streamberry. It's one of the most meta-episodes ever. I hated the humour, but it dawned on me at the end that Charlie had been playing a trick on me the entire time. It was a middle finger to the rest of the dross that is on Netflix.

I think that’s exactly what black mirror wants us to grab from this ending

Yep. The algorithm decided to create a positive conclusion to make Joan more relatable in the end, everyone loves a good redemption arc.

I agree. I think it implies that we could be part of the quantum computer and we’re not real either, just another layer

You missed the house arrest ankle bands, that her and Annie Taylor were wearing, implying that we all are imprisoned even if we think we have our own free will, we're only being given that false sense of security.

This was the first episode I’d watched in while and tbh, the really wish they kept the show British because at the end you were always left with this really bitter and depressing ending, whereas now everything ends very optimistically.

Agreed, Black Mirror should have remained british.

I think people are done with depressing endings, not everyone for sure, but most people crave for some optimism after such a rough few years everyone lived. I like this type of episodes where a lot of reality is questioned and it still throws some depressing concepts and questions but end with a glipse of hope

ONE episode ended optimistically…or was it just the algorithm feeding us the most impactful content?
