Black Native American fight to regain status

One of many uncomfortable truths about race in the US is that several Native American tribes once owned Black slaves.
After the civil war, they were forced to end the practice and granted their slaves full citizenship, but over the years, they stripped Black tribal members of their rights.
Al Jazeera's Shihab Rattansi reports from Oklahoma on how they are trying to win those rights back.

Brown Skin doesn't just come from Africa. Even some African tribes will tell you they don't come from Africa or they migrated their! They don't even call Africa Africa. Our Ancestors knew who they were! Noone tells an Aboriginal Australian they really came from Africa. Plus open books it's written and drawn what the Spaniards saw when they voyaged the America's.

@@Aboriginal_American_Hebrew there’s actually no descriptions of Indigenous people that match african Americans, I can provide a link to how Columbus described natives… and they weren’t identical or similar at all to the Africans he had with him on his first trip. Many tribal members are partially white, black or Asian (through intermarriage in the US or admixture with mestizo people) from Latin countries yet partially black tribal members who look more black are the ones being rejected? RIDICULOUS.

The 1863 Emancipation Proclamation only applied to States in rebellion, and did not legally affect slavery in Indian areas that fought for the Confederacy. All slaves in the United States were legally emancipated upon the ratification of the 13th Amendment on December 6, 1865, just after the American Civil War.[1] In practice, slavery continued in Indian territories. The federal government negotiated new treaties with the "Five Civilized Tribes" in 1866, in which they agreed to end slavery.[2]

Those of you screaming anti-black at the Five Tribes claiming the Five Tribes accept White five dollar Indians over blacks is BS, lol. Like I mentioned in previous comments, everyone rather they are Native, White, Black, mixed race, Afro Indigenous, Freedmen etc. has to meet the enrollment criteria which various from Tribal Nation to Nation which includes each of the Five Tribes. The Freedmen weren't the only non-natives removed off of citizenship rolls, so were whites and others who were adopted or if they didn't meet new by-blood laws/enrollment criteria established by most of the Five Tribes, or if their family were found to have enrolled through fraudulent means. Was there some prejudice intent to remove the Freedmen and others off of Citizenship, there sure was some, but most of it was by blood reasoning.

Intermixing with native Americans happened very early. Black people sailed to the Americas long before Columbus. Vasco Nunez de Balboa, made record of seeing “Negroes” when they reached the New World. The accounts match up with the reports from the natives in Mexico. Nicholas Leon, an eminent Mexican authority, recorded the oral traditions of his people and ultimately kept track of a key piece of evidence that Black people made it to the New World far before their European counterparts.

No outside organization, governments or rights groups has a right to dictate any Tribe's enrollment criteria, each Tribe decides their respective enrollment criteria. A few U.S. Supreme Court rulings in the late 1970's and early 1980's gave all Tribes the right to determine their own respective enrollment criteria. As I explained in previous comments, each Tribe has a right to decide enrollment criteria, however each person or family who was removed from citizenship/enrollment has a right to challenge the disenrollment in Tribal Court to see if their disenrollment was a Tribal Constitutional violation. Most if not all Tribes have protections for their members/citizens as it pertains to enrollment/citizenship rights, if the person(s) was found to have been disenrolled by means of prejudice, greed or malicious intent, they will win back their membership/citizenship (such as the case with the Cherokee Nation and Freedmen). But keep in mind, each Tribes have the right to determine and change their enrollment criteria so it always depends on current tribal leadership and the citizens to decide.

@@diaryofanaxeman539 I heard there is a notorious disenroller in Pechanga Tribal Council who pushed for more strict lineage requirements as a means to target certain Clans considered a distant cousin of the Tribe, and to target families so other families can have bigger cuts. I haven't heard any other Tribe doing that except one Tribe (I can't remember which) literally as two large families who are fighting for power with each family controlling their own police force (of course they have a huge casino profits). This is why most Tribes have laws to limit relatives or family on Tribal Council or Department heads.
@Thomas_Oklahoma
@Thomas_Oklahoma Жыл бұрын
The Five Tribes has just as large Casinos, but we have hundreds of thousands of tribal citizens, so a cut would only equal $400 a year for each Citizen. So the leaders spend it on education, infrastructure, tuition, job training, healthcare and small business development instead which is a better way as it is a hand up instead of a huge $120,000 hand out of casino profits. Investing into People rather than giving people huge cuts actually prevents corruption.

This issue is far more complicated that this politically correct piece presents. Very typical for an Al Jazeera production. They are part of the MSM and always present only one side of a story; the far left side. And if there is no left side or right side of a story, then they simply present it in whatever way makes the US look the worst. Al Jazeera, "The Peninsula" in arabic language, (reference to the "holy" peninsula of the Muslim religion in Saudi Arabia) is an arabic propaganda machine, that used to be called the "Terror network" and used to do every single story it could to either make the US look bad artificially, or to attempt to sew seeds of divisiveness in order to segregate and separate Americans. All, in an attempt to weaken the US. This negative presentation is done in the classic style of an Al Jazeera story about American culture, complete with its impressive sounding narrator possessing an authoritative Continental accent that most Americans (who are notoriously easily impressed by accents) would believe worthy of trust. I am personally familiar with the story of the Cherokee Freedmen, and I can assure all viewers that this story is so full of holes, it isn't even worth watching. The story you're getting is so incomplete as to be a total waste of three minutes and forty seven seconds. It is a complete FAIL, unless you're the producer of the story and your only real goal is to create something to make people mad and divide them, in which case this Arabic propaganda news agency scores a win!

Words from the man "America" is literally named after about what he says he saw when he got here. "They are of medium stature, and very well proportioned. The colour of their skins inclines to red, like the skin of a lion, and I believe that, if they were properly clothed, they would be white like ourselves." - Amerigo Vespucci So what proof do yall have again?

And America was only named after him because he was yet another white person who claimed to have discovered america, so they credited him because he basically said “hey guys. Columbus was retarded and lost. This is a different land entirely, not india.” To make a long story short

Sounds like yall are just jealous we know our people, history, culture, languages, etc while you'll never know that about yourself boy. So I'll ask you I ask all of your ilk I have the misfortune of having to talk to, what mor am I supposed to research exactly boy? Yall will never be able to disprove the fact your ancestors sold each other to the colonists and kept the records of it simpleton. The day we get the right to kick yall people out of our tribes and sue yall for that 40 acres we were forced to give yall Freedman back cannot come soon enough in my opinion.

@multismartove every single A.A. N the U.S. believes they have a N.A. N their ancestry, but DNA has already proved that only 5% of A.A.'s have N.A. DNA. Their werre only 8000 slaves within the 5 civilized tribes, so obviously not every A.A. has a N.A. ancestor. What A.A.'s do have is European DNA, not N.A.

U refuse 2 believe that Jehovah planned the different ethnicities around the world & He controls all nations & wrote everything N His book (living & breathing bible), whether U believe or not. I can give U scriptures where He says this.

A relatively large number of negro slaves were owned by the Five Civilized Tribes before the American Civil War. Slaves were introduced while the Tribes still maintained their homelands east of the Mississippi River; after removal to the Indian Territory with their masters, the slaves formed an isolated labor pool for the entrepreneurial element of the Tribes. Slave-holding among the Indians maintained a form quite similar to that in the Old South, as the idea of slaving was transferred almost intact to the Indian society from the Southerners.

Read the Congressional Records regarding : The Annexation of Texas 1845. It specifically states that... "the lands between the Nueces and Bravo Rivers are boundaries between the Anglo-Saxon and Mauritanian races. Everything west of the Bravo belongs to the Moors and their Indian Associates". Associates are NOT land owners.
