Black Orchestra is simply one of the greatest co-op games every designed. As one of the BoardGameGeek users put it: "And while it can be galling in the extreme to watch plot after plot fail, or languishing in a Gestapo prison for five turns, or just feeling helpless and worthless when nothing comes of all your efforts, one arrives at the conclusion that this is precisely what Black Orchestra was meant to be."

This game seems incredibly thematic in the mechanics and feel of the game. It was interesting the desperation that you seemed to feel that you need to hurry up and compete your plot before the opportunity passes.

I'm totally late to the party here, just got the game today. I think the rulebook got a revision, because my copy clearly states that you have to clear out the space before you can deliver (you can't see the bonus until you've removed the item). Great video as always. It's partly what sold me on this game.

Hi Richard, had a question when watching your playthrough and final thoughts: what are your thoughts on the scripted historically correct 1-7 decks vs replayability? E.g. you might know Hitler has a parade in berlin anyhow and will meet up in Nuremburg... Does this influence the experience?

At the beginning of the video Rhado says he got the game at Essen. So what's this talk about it being banned there?

I think it's pretty good! Very simple and streamlined to play. Won my first game on a fluke but the second game was MUCH more challenging (and probably more typical) with the constant threat of discovery, a couple failed attempts, plotters being thrown in jail and -- ultimately -- a loss. Makes me want to play it again, though!

Rahdo mentions that in the box it says the number of lives that would be saved depending on at what stage you win. That thematic touch pushed me to purchase. I've just received the second printing of the game and didn't see anything about this in the rulebook. Is this something that was in the 1st printing rulebook? Would love to find ths info somewhere. Couldn't see a 1st edn rulebook on bgg (understandably!)

would it be safe to say that this game is a re-theme of Freedom underground railroad? or how does it compare to Freedom?

How would you compare this to Days of Ore: Budapest 1956? Personally I like DoI better. Its my most under rated game of 2016.

I was disappointed with the rule book. I expected some sort of Introduction to start with for this type of game. Really bummed to see the setup on page 1 without any intro. Intro is must for me to grab the rules quicker and also to add some flavour to the game.

Interesting, but the theme alone makes it a real hard sell for gamers who are women and/or Germans, and these are the majority of people I play with.
@glyyytch
@glyyytch 7 жыл бұрын
I am curious as why you believe the theme wouldn't appeal to women or Germans. Sure, the WWII thing could be a touchy subject for a large number of people despite nationality, but you aren't supporting the Third Reich in the game. In fact, you are actively trying to end it.
@shatnershairpiece
@shatnershairpiece 7 жыл бұрын
glyyytch Why? Because I presented this game idea to various people who are women, and German, and not one of them expressed interest. General response was laughter, disgust, and eye rolling. This is an American style fantasy game. Germans don't have any interest in nazi themes, or in general, 'war games'. They have little respect for their own army, or those who join the army. This is seen as a 'ridiculous occupation'. This game was banned at Essen, so that should explain fairly clearly how this game does not appeal to Germans. Doesn't really make any difference that you are trying to kill Hitler, that's not going to turn women, or Germans, on.
@glyyytch
@glyyytch 7 жыл бұрын
shatnershairpiece, the reason I asked is because most of the female gamers I know have shown interest in the game. I have also known a couple of Germans that have been really interested in other WWII games. I was actually introduced to Memoir '44 by a German buddy of mine in college who absolutely loved the game. Perhaps in your circles the women and German players you know aren't interested in it, and that is totally fine. I just don't think that it offers as widespread problems in other circles containing similar demographics is all. As far as an Essen ban is concerned, games have been banned for a number of reasons in the past. In the case of this game, I would imagine that it was banned because of the SS symbol on the cards. If I remember correctly, the German Criminal Code outlaws distribution of materials that contain symbols associated with Nazis, among other things. Most games that are associated with WWII end up using some of the iconography of that time period and end up getting banned. That means a lot of German gamers won't even have access to those types of games in the first place so I don't know if it is fair to completely generalize the population's interest. If you would have been interested in the game otherwise, I think it is a shame that your group isn't really receptive to it.
@shatnershairpiece
@shatnershairpiece 7 жыл бұрын
glyyytch yes, it is obvious why the game is banned in Germany, but even if it wasn't banned for symbolism, there would be no rush for Germans, or German women, to buy this game. I will assert this very strongly, this is an 'American male fantasy game'. It is a fantasy of the Americans, not one of the Germans'. I also lived and played regularly in Germany (Berlin Hamburg Munich) for five years, and never met anyone who showed interest in any Nazi themed games like this. Sure, there will be a lot of non Germans who like this game, of that I have no doubt.
@glyyytch
@glyyytch 7 жыл бұрын
shatnershairpiece that may be the case, but like I said, I have personally known German gamers who have enjoyed games about that time period and war games in general. That suggests that there is a portion of the German gaming community that would be interested in it. Also, from what I understand at least, more American style and "American" themed games are gaining ground throughout Europe. From the data available to me it is a fair assessment that there would be a market for these types of games in Germany if there weren't legal concerns. However, due to the legal concerns within the country it is a non-issue. Also, I never said it was a fantasy of German gamers so please don't imply that I am trying to assert something I am not. I also have no information of the type of gamer you are, or the people you gamed with in Germany so that tidbit offers very little. There could be social pressures in place that would impact the number of people who would outwardly show interest in the game thanks to the collective guilt placed upon the German people after the war. Basically, those kind of generalizations make me uncomfortable when I have contrary data. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and at least now I know why you have the opinion you do. Your second reply did a far better job of explaining your position, so I thank you for that. Perhaps the German gamers I know aren't representative. Maybe more interest would be there if it were for the laws surrounding this topic and the collective guilt issue. If you are right though, I find it odd that I happened across the only five German gamers who enjoy WWII games is all I am saying.
