@@monseftheman You're likely right. White books are most common/prevalent whereas Black cultural books are not. No real need for an exclusively white book store. And actually there are all and only white book stores that cater only to white supremacists and nationalists. The difference is the store featured is promoting positivity, truth and light. The other kind I mention, fuel hate, conspiracies and darkness.

@@monseftheman Another way of viewing it is through the lens of business. Market research reveals there is a need. Therefore they crafted their business to fulfill that need and thus far they have been successful. If there was no need then the business would not be successful. I didn't get the impression they were denying anyone service or participation however the products they provide are based on market demand.

I get that this is important for black people, but it's important for all of us. This is what small businesses are all about. We can focus on the importance of black or brown owned business and why we need them...racism. That's why you need this type of store. We need small businesses to succeed because these businesses are what make our communities special. Small businesses aren't cookie cutter places that you can just plop down anywhere. They fit the community that they are in.

When I was little I felt like an outsider because everywhere I turned the faces, drawings, pictures on books, advertisements, tv programs etc did not look like me. It made me feel like non of these stories or products or sports are meant for me. I felt like I would look stupid wanting to participate because it wouldn't be welcomed. It kept me from doing and liking a lot of things. I still to some extent don't feel comfortable going into all types of stores and places. It makes you feel restricted in life. @Sista Righteous It is horrifying that this is still happening. I hope you can address the issue head on with your son and encourage him. My parents tried to tell me not to let it bother me and tried to downplay it. That doesn't help. I hope your son will soon understand that nobody should stand in the way of his personal happiness and enjoyment and that people who are racist or mean act like that because they themselves aren't happy. They are not happy with themselves and want to look down on someone else so that they can feel better. That is at the core of it. This hurts now but with some time he will become strong enough to deal with it 💙

"You could be killed for reading...." that is a powerful reminder of why we must all learn American history. Covid has kept me home for a year. I'm a white lady, who has just spent the last 10 or so months at home learning about black history. It's powerful, it's amazing, it's terrifying. We should all learn this. When I went to school they had about 2 pages on slavery. There needs to be an entire book(s) on it, and a course that is mandatory to get out of 5th or 6th grade. Just my humble opinion.

Knowing the suffering and injustice black people still go through is why they have earned all my respect! I’m teaching my kids not to be racist we are brothers and sisters. My Mexican grandparents are racist and colorist. And in my family that ends with my generation.

@@Swnsasy hard to summarize but basically about how to relate to black American and global history and be proud- a literal dissertation as to what Nas sang about.... facts that blow your mind. It changed the way that I view America and the black experience. Along with he autobiography of Malcolm X this is a great read....

And STILL waiting for a call back from Fay or the store owners after leaving 4 voice messages and 4 emails. As someone who supports Black Owned Businesses and primarily buys from B.O.B.s this is extremely disappointing on the lack of professional customer service that is being extended to me. I had over $100 worth of books in my cart to purchase the next day, I removed them all. I have no interest in spending my money with an establishment that has no interest in rectifying an error on their part. February 11th will be 2 weeks and counting.

Everything about this was beautiful, and without exception, Jenna’s heart. You can see it made her emotional. It reminds me of when President Obama was elected. My husband and I bawled, we were both so incredibly happy and hopeful... it’s a very good feeling. Wishing all the best for the owners of Mahogany Books. Continued great success. If I ever go to Washington I’ll look for the store.it would be cool for it to be popular like Shakespeare & Co. in Paris. A ‘Must See’!
