Killmonger's motives were mostly about race, even though he had his father be killed by the black panther. but, that last part sure helped with marketing.

But when the king died and it was time to appoint a new one they need to give the opportunity to the other tribes if they want. That fight wasn’t just for the Black Panther it was also for king.

T’Challa had already become Black Panther while his father was alive. His father passed on that mantle while remaining king. T’Challa had to give up the Black Panther powers for the ritual combat to inherit the crown. I mean I love Pitch Meeting, but that actually did make sense in the movie.

It was explained why T'Challa already had the Panther powers. It was because his father was already old and needed to pass on the mantel. The whole ritual was for the coronation, wherein the tribes who wanted to rule would challenge the king, but to make the challenge fair they take away the panther powers.
