A small point people may have missed, but Ramonda says something like "there's something I need to tell you about your brother" right before Namor shows up for the first time. And it's confirmed she knew about prince Tchala, so it's likely she was about to tell Shuri about her brother having a son and trusting her with that information and helping her mourn,etc.

The funeral at the beginning was like the fans getting to be there for Chadwick. Those scenes were so hard to watch but needed I think to get past the fact that he’s gone for real. Loved the casting of T’Challa’s son. He definitely had Chadwick’s smile. Such a beautiful movie.

A brief history on Namor the Sub-Mariner: Namor is such an interesting character. The movie changed his origins from his comic counterpart, but I didn’t mind the changes. In the comics Namor and his people are Atlanteans and he is the result of his Atlantean mother falling for a sailor during WW1 (he has a lot of similarities to Aquaman but Namor was first). Namor is considered comics first mutant even being used for reference when X-Men was being pitched. He also is the first comic book character to fly, Superman was still just leaping tall buildings at the time. Namor the Sub-Mariner was a member of The Invaders, Captain America’s team during WW2. He’s been an Avenger, an X-Man, an ally to the Fantastic Four, and founded the Defenders. Not only has he aided those teams he’s also been an adversary to most of them. M’Baku’s claim that Namor could match the Hulk isn’t an exaggeration, Namor has gone toe to toe with some of Marvel’s heaviest hitters and he uses the line between hero and villain like a jump rope. Namor is also bipolar in the comics because half his physiology craves air and the other craves water so it creates a chemical imbalance in his brain. Imperious Rex is his comic book catch phrase and just means Emperor King. He’s most designed after Greek and Roman conquerors, in fact his name is just Roman backwards. Sorry for the info dump. Namor is one of my favorite comic book characters and it’s a shame more people didn’t know about him before this movie.

Angela Basset’s acting was tremendous! As were her arms and shoulders, what a beautiful woman. Every scene showing Chad was devastatingly sad. I cried a lot in the theater. The end scene of the fire on the beach with Rihanna’s song was just beautiful, tender, & mournful. I have a feeling that wasn’t the first time Val put Everett in handcuffs since they were married. Beads may have been involved too 😮 Namor was portrayed very well by Tenoch. Looking forward to what he brings in the future. As for the other Angela, wonderful reaction, I expected no less. And damn, are you intuitive and can see things coming. 👍

I have to think that while parts of this were difficult for everyone to film, they had to also find some solace in it. Chadwick fought SO hard to make all those movies while he was literally dying, and making this while grieving must have been a powerful way to honor him. It may also have been a comfort to share all those feelings with each other and with all of us by depicting them on screen.

20:52 I love how Namor just casually drops the term "Mutant" this technically being the first time we've heard the term in the MCU. Fox since 1996 owned the movie licence to X-Men so the term Mutant was off limit for the MCU. MCU instead uses the term Enhanced Individuals stated by Steve Rogers in Avengers Age of Ultron when speaking about Peter and Wanda while Government groups like Damage Control used to describe anyone with powers such as Miss Marvel but the term Mutant as never been used. There's actually a deleted scene for Nick Fury's appearance at the end of Iron Man 2008 in which he mentions Mutants but this never made it into the film most likely for legal reasons. Imagine Marvel Studios was speaking to Fox holding out for them to allow the scene but they declined so it was never used. Tyler Boring does a great break down on Namor in the comments but in the comics he is indeed a Mutant labelled as "The First Mutant" in many comic covers as he's Marvel first Mutant character. In universe there's older mutants it's just an out of universe title. So the MCU are slowing building up their mutant roster for when the start to introduce the X-Men. They've already introduced a few X-Men location's such as Madripoor in Falcon and the Winter Solider where we also saw a sign for the Princess Bar a bar often visited by Logan who also owned the bar for a time. Madripoor was also where Captain America and Logan met for the first time in WW2 when he was known as "The Canadian".

Namor did not wait for the call because he is a self-entitled SOB and the movie captures the gist of the comic character beautifully. He believes that he is the only person who knows what is right (kind of like Magneto) and expects everyone to accept his pronouncements even when he is wrong (which is most of the time since not everyone sees him as their LAWFUL MONARCH).

Great film. Even better reaction. You wear your emotions so squarely on your sleeves. It's beautiful to witness. This movie, like the first BP, had a villain the viewer could sympathize/ empathize with. I sided with Wakanda AND Talokan. I saw both perspectives. I actually hated the fighting, because I didn't want ANYONE to perish. I'm happy it ended the way it did with at throw back to the yield at Warrior Falls with T'Challa and M'Baku. This is the best storyline they could've imagined given the circumstances.

To answer your question about M’Baku, I think Marvel plans on him being king for now. I also think the plans the US had to destabilize the country will reveal itself in some future content. Shuri will remain Black Panther for now, but I think she is a bit ashamed of her behavior after the death of her mother. Many Wakandans died in that attack on the Talocans for her revenge, and I think that’s weighing on her. The Black Panther is the protector of Wakanda, so if the nation needs her, I’m sure she’ll be there for them, but I think right now she wants to focus on getting her head right. Hardest part I cried was when Prince T’Challa announced himself. Tears of joy though! Great reaction!

I love how they honored Chadwick and kept his spirit alive. Yes M'Baku is king of Wakanda. Prince T'Challa has to challenge for the throne. Namor didn't kill the Queen. He set up the circumstances of her death. Ramonda chose to go back to save RiRi. She chose to risk her life and sacrifice herself for another. Saying Namor killed her really dishonors her sacrifice imo. Namor was awesome. He is a great villain like Killmonger. He has an understandable motive based on his past. He is determined, strong, and smart. The MCU version is much more interesting than the comic version. Plus he stuck Shuri into one of the diving suits they took from the Americans at the beginning. Hopefully they cleaned the blood out. Winston Duke just nails M'Baku. I would love an M'Baku one shot. He has such a presence and this movie shows how smart, adaptable, and empathetic he is. He suggested the obvious, though simplistic, solution of killing Namor, but after face him head on, was quick to realize the reality. Another great, well rounded character. I cried too many times.

M'Baku is indeed the new King of Wakanda, the first that's not a direct descendant of the first Black Panther, but he will most likely not take the heart-shaped herb and just simply be the leader of the nation like Ramonda. Shuri will be the Black Panther, protector of the nation, most likely then handing over the mantle to young T'Challa. Whether or not he'll be King as well will be decided if he decides to challenge M'Baku or his heir when he grows up.
@Igwecala-xm3dg
@Igwecala-xm3dg 5 ай бұрын
M'Baku isn't the 1st though; an unbroken line that extends 8000 years doesn't make much sense. The limiting factor to being Black Panther is that only a descendant of Bashenga can take the herb and not have it kill them, but Bashenga was 6000 BC. He married and had children, and those children married and had children (with children who may have been acknowledged or not), with that going on for 300 generations. Whether M'Baku had any blood of Bashenga in his veins (to stave off death from the heart-shaped herb) is unknown, but the first outside of the line is a bit of a stretch, imo

Controversial opinion time: For as much as is made of Wakanda being the most powerful nation on Earth, I just gotta say that their battle strategies come off as STAGGERINGLY inept (not just in this movie, but also in the first, and in Infinity War). Quite frankly, any halfway competent world power would absolutely steamroll them in a battle.

Yea I totally see where you are coming from. Wakanda has a ton of technology but really hasn't used it for conquest. They hid from the world and are stuck in the old ways like hand to hand fighting with spears and such. Namor's people are about the same. They will need to up their game with more power armor and weapons. I think M'Baku will be able to push that change. At least I hope so.

Wakanda only seems inept when weighed against a nation that can get past Vibranium (with the stuff in their blood). Wakanda is ready and prepared for anything a conventional world power could even conceive of trying, and likely prepared for a few steps beyond that. Even with the Talokanil, after the sneak attack was dealt with they identified the breathers, they identified the difference in their Vibranium from the one found in Wakanda, and the sonic weapons were immediately turned to as being determinative (Shuri identified that in her work to make Vibranium inert in transport). The invasion wouldn't have worked the second time; you would've had these immensely strong warriors having their breathers attacked while being fired upon by sonic weapons, including the sonic hand cannons...

That was my feeling the entire time. As sad as it was to watch for us as fans, for the cast, they basically in some ways had to relive all that. While it was for the movie, that pain and strife was because they lost him in real life.

48:35 - Well, there was only one "girl" in the original Avengers roster in the movies, so there's balance in that respect. That said, Wanda's boys were also members of the Young Avengers in the comics and with the multiverse/time travel being a big part of the story arc, we could see more versions of them going forward too.

Notes regarding this film and the future of the MCU: In the original script, T’Challa’s son would’ve had a more prominent role. Valentina also would have been a secondary antagonist. However, plans for Namor were pretty much the same. In fact, Namor is a member of the comics’ version of the Illuminati. They decided to not include him in the Illuminati that we met in the Multiverse of Madness as they had other plans for him - those plans including Wakanda Forever. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I feel like Nakia is as much to blame as Ramonda for sparking a war between Wakanda and Talokan. Granted she was following orders, but if she had listened to Shuri and stayed for Namor to return they might have avoided a misunderstanding. There were even two instances when Shuri didn’t want to talk to Nakia. Shuri was mad at Nakia for not attending T’Challa’s funeral, and Nakia was calling her to clarify why. Regarding W’Kabi’s absence, Daniel Kaluuya had a pretty packed schedule and with so much going on they weren’t sure where to put him. Director Ryan Coogler confirmed that he’s currently banished to the outskirts of Wakanda. In the Latin Spanish dub, Ramonda said he’s in prison. Despite not being in the film though, there is some artwork of what W’Kabi would’ve worn if he had made it to the film. On a brighter note, I’m gonna miss Trevor Noah on the Daily Show but I’m glad he had more lines as Griot this time around. I’m personally glad this film wasn’t too funny, but Riri and M’Baku helped to bring some lightheartedness during this hard time. M’Baku in particular had some major character development in my opinion. Before he took that massive blow from Namor, he wasn’t looking before leaping. Then after Ramonda died, he had a lot to consider. Those traits and experiences are what will help him become the proper king that Wakanda needs going forward. One particular thing that I like about this movie was that we got not one but TWO indigenous actresses from Guatemala. María Mercedes Coroy (Namor’s mom) and Doña María Telón (the elder Nakia spoke to) are both from Santa María de Jesús in the Sacatepéquez Deparment. My parents are from Quetzaltenango. The film’s score includes edited versions for some of the soundtracks’ songs, but they didn’t add the film’s version of Alone by Burna Boy which includes an excerpt of Stormzy’s Interlude at the start of the song. In the soundtrack, both songs are separate. Senegalese musician Baaba Maal who provided vocals for some of the background music in Black Panther 1 and 2 got to make a cameo singing at T’Challa’s funeral. Josué Maychi, the actor who portrayed the shaman in the Zamá flashcack, was also brought into the fold as a dialect coach for the cast. He taught them Yucatec Mayan. Tenoch Huerta got to reprise his role as Namor for the Latin Spanish dub. With this film and the Guardians’ Holiday Special, we close out phase four and enter phase five. We kick it off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It should be available for streaming next month if not later. In May, we’re getting Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. Then this November, Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel team up to form a mighty trio: The Marvels. It recently got postponed after it was supposed to premiere in July. At least it gives you more time to watch Ms. Marvel. As for tv shows, Nick Fury and Talos have their own limited series titled Secret Invasion coming this spring. Loki season 2 will likely arrive in between June and September. Alaqua Cox reprised her role as Maya Lopez from Hawkeye in her own show called Echo which is her superhero codename. The show is currently set to premiere this fall. Riri may not have been allowed to take her suit, but that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of them. In fact, we’re just getting started. Riri’s superhero codename is Ironheart. She’s gonna have her own series later this year. Agatha Harkness from WandaVision is also getting her own series titled Agatha: Coven of Chaos. Previously it was Agatha: House of Harkness. Marvel Studios is also producing a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series picking up from the end of season five. It’s under the name X-Men 97. Most of the voice cast is returning, and a second season (or rather a seventh season) is in production. We’re also getting a second season of What If. No release date has been confirmed yet, but Elizabeth Olsen voiced at least one variant of the Scarlet Witch. Sam Wilson is also getting his own Captain America film in May 2024 called New World Order. And we have a ways to, but phase six will include the Fantastic Four slated for Valentine’s Day 2025. Then we’re getting not one but TWO Avengers movies: the Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

Bit late to this reaction, but there are several boys they’ve KIND of introduced for the Young Avengers: Wanda Maximoff’s sons, Billy and Tommy were founding members and there are ways to bring them into age with the others; there’s also Elijah Bradley, the forgotten 1950s Captain America from F&TWS, whose grandson Eli Bradley (also introduced in said show if unnamed) was a YA founder known as Patriot… We shall see if the mess the MCU is in pulls it all together or not, however.

She definitely has hand to hand experience. They don’t speak on it but queen romanda was a Dora I believe. And with a family full of panthers, you can assume Shuri would be trained to fight as well. Oh and she was apart of the fights with kilmomger, and thanos as well.

I think folks discount the reality that she fought in Black Panther, fought in Infinity War, and fought in End Game, to dismiss her ability to fight. She's not T'Challa, or Okoye, or Nakia, but that doesn't mean she can't fight in her own right

I horribly cried and snotted through this movie. I love the movie and Namor(Namor be a HERO) is redeemed, but SHURI is the standout for me. There is a beautiful movie like this, and beautiful is imperfect. I really miss Chadwick Boseman. I am loving your reaction, thank you. I work in film and tv, and this is one of those films I would have loved to work on.
