@@swampcrypt I think our definition of heavy metal may differ. To me what Toni Iommi and his hired guns did in the 80s/90s is no better than any overproduced commercial made-for-airplay hard rock (glam/hair/FM metal) of the era. (If you read his autobiography, it is clear he did not put as much love in what he produced in those days than coke in his nostrils.) It his not worse than what others did at the time, but it has no special flavor or personality. You could mistake it for Dokken or any other in that category. I think e.g. Ozzy did far better as to retain some personality in what seems to me a very bland era. Many many bands, but all doing the same power ballads with too much reverb. I lived through this and did not like it. I seem to notice that younger people (not even born at the time) like this style and period. There surely is an explanation. And it is good, each one gets his own. But hearing Glenn Hughes (and clones) clean vocals and echo-drowned drums still make my skin crawl. It would sure take me a lot to listen carefuly to all that 😉

Both eras have great songs and I think they actually have a lot in common in terms of their sound, much more so than the Ozzy eras. I don't really like the Headless Crosses album but everything else from Martin is pure gold.

Master of Reality 15??????? That album is the heaviest, relentless, repentless, mean, creepy------basically influenced those later to play death metal. I was scared of it as a kid, meaning, in the 70s. The riffs are nearly dead and intentionally without emotion. It is pure doom, and made the other rock and roll bands at the time seem like tap dancers. Aside from War pigs and Paranoid (way overplayed), in the 80s and 90s, hardcore, thrash and death metal band covers all came from Master.

Interesting list! Didn't expect to see the first six albums so low, but it is indeed refreshing to see a list like this. I love those albums, but I feel that people are a little too biased against the albums from Born Again to Forbidden. Headless Cross, thankfully, does seems to be gettting some recognition lately, but I don't understand why the same people rank TYR way lower, when it is fairly similar in sound to HC. In fact, something in your list where I totally agree is that TYR is actually the better album. Sure, the first three tracks on HC are amazing, but I feel it kind of loses steam until Nighwing, while TYR is just more solid and full of epic tracks. Also, might want to check the new remix of Forbidden, it really does make the album a lot better.

You should do a ranking of some of the early 70's obscure proto metal groups such as, Christopher, Leaf Hound, Bang, Dust, Lucifers Friend, Zior, Sir Lord Baltimore, Variations, May Blitz, The Third Power, Sex, Captain Beyond, Jericho, Buffalo, Tin House, Thunder And Rose's, Granicus, Message, Gift...and on and on. THESE are just a few bands that were overshadowed by Black Sabbath but were extremely crucial and influential to most of the metal acts that came after.
