Tony said in an interview that this solo was his favorite of all his solos. Dio years are fantastic with BS. Martin Birch's production of this album was really good. Other great Dio era songs "Sign of the Southern Cross", "I", "Heaven & Hell", & Children of of the Sea" and many others. Plus in 2007 until his death, they got back together under the band name Heaven & Hell, songs like "Bible Black" and "The Devil Cried" are great songs for guys in their 60's

This was great and very entertaining, Nick! I loved it, thanks! I'll definitely have to check out Symphony X, which sounds terrific! I'm a big fan of melodic metal, so it sounds right up my alley! This song was the last great track where Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward were all involved together. It also is a great example (as will be the next song involving thee most underrated singer of all time, Tony Martin) of how Iommi can play with anyone, and bring them to their maximum potential, even someone great like Dio.

Also checkout the Prog Metal band "Ark", the vocalist Jørn Lande sounds like Dio meets Coverdale, who has a solo band called "Jorn", which goes from Heavy Rock to Metal, and he's been part of many other bands, and has a project with "Sir" Russel Allen of Symphony X called "Lande/Allen" 🙂.

Again, you have this album and the next one; "Mob Rules" 🙂 . . . THIS album was shockingly great, when I was _just_ discovering Ronnie James Dio with 𝕽𝖆𝖎𝖓𝖇𝖔𝖜, and went out and bought the Lp. The WHOLE album is solid, the title-track put them back on the map when most were giving-up on Sabbath losing Ozzy (but he also gaining fans from his Solo album debut). I'd say Iommi was getting to stretch his guitar style, his tone was a bit "brighter" as well. Its too bad Bill Ward thought Ozzy WAS "Sabbath", so he left after the completion of the album (and dealing with his addictions), so "ELO's" Bev Bevan took over for the tour. Mob Rules is excellent as well, the closer ("Over and Over") is also a HIGHLY emotional Blues/Metal track, and Tony Iommi shines and makes his SG cry in pain even more! 2 of my favorite Dio albums (even more-so than his solo Band). I thought Dio and Sabbath created some awesome music together. There is heavier material on those 2 albums Nick, coming soon I hope! - Rest in Peace 𝕯𝖎𝕺, I'm glad I at-least saw him with his own band for a few tours \m/.

Maybe my favorite or second favorite Sabbath song without Ozzy. Iommi's playing in this sounds different to me. Usually he had a very thick deep sound and riff based. But in this one it's lighter more free flowing. It almost sounds like Alex Lifeson's style of playing. I wonder if he used a different guitar or something. So if you haven't ever heard the Heaven and Hell song definitely check it out. It's easily their most famous song without Ozzy.

By far the best bs album imo…this is a goosebump song…the whole band is on point…geezers bass drives the song , dio is as usual amazing, TI ‘s best worked solo…OMFG…from age 10 I can’t stop coming back to this…it has shaped my musical taste and is a benchmark that I compare others to. This is the lineup that shone on their merit…not gimmicks. Rip RJD…vocal god.

The sabbath stuff of the first album was probably the best day ever did in my opinion, particularly sleeping village warning. As far as Ron is concerned, rainbow live in Munich mistreated is probably the best example of Ronnie’s range, and Richie solos or fantastic and Cozy Powell drumming is off the charts.

When I was in high school, Paranoid was the album everyone fussed over, including me, but when I heard Heaven and Hell, Paranoid got pushed aside. Not that I disliked Sabbath with Ozzy, but Dio sang to a slower hard rock and was coherent to follow without looking to the lyrics in the liner.

I'd be willing to bet that the synth backing the solo at the end has nothing to do with Zeppelin, and has everything to do with the live version of Cath the Rainbow that Rainbow did on stage when Dio was with them. I'm sure the suggestion to put that under the solo probably came from him, and I'm sure that's where he got the idea. I'm sure the note selection was coincidental and was based on the key of the solo by offstage keyboardist Geoff Nichols.

The only time I liked Black Sabbath was when Dio sang for them. Great song choice, btw. I saw the Mob Rules tour and this was one of if not the worst concert I've been to. The opening band, The Outlaws blew them away. Funny, the only other concert that I did not enjoy was Ozzy. No prejudice, I did scrape up the money for the gas and tickets. A hard thing to do at the time. I still love the two studio albums of Black Sabbath with Dio. I agree with your comments on the musicians!
