Remember buying this album. I was in my local record store as a goofy 18 year old! Flicking through all the vinyls! Next thing this album came on through the stores pa system! Wow I thought. I'm 59! In '79 I heard the Cars Candy-O in the store's PA and bought it on the spot. Back then, I was a super Christian boy and wouldn't dare think of buying a Black Sabbath album. RJD clearly has far more range and a more melodious timbre, but I've always preferred Ozzy on vocals when it comes to Black Sabbath. His voice just fits the whole Sabbath vibe a lot better in my opinion, it blends perfectly with their ominous tone. RJD is definitely an amazing singer, but for me Ozzy is an intrinsic component in the overall Sabbath sound.

My friends and I went to the Roxy in Hollywood when Mr varney was first starting his metal promotions. There was like 15 bands. None of them had a real song line up. I think there was 20 people in the audience. Got to see a lot of unknowns...slayer, king diamond, Metallica with Dave mustaine and cliff Burton. Betsy from bitch comes out in a leather teddy and started giving buttons to anyone who would kiss her ass. That was the start of metal. That was the first time they opened the Roxy in 25 years. The next day we got to Lizzy Borden in a high school auditorium..

First heard this after a grueling football practice in High School and was blown away by the riff lines and blended change ups intermixed with the bass lines in Neon Knights. I bought the album a few weeks later off a fence in school who got them really cheap and wore out my turntable listening to it, it still holds up 40 years later. A very powerful and emotionally charged album. DIO will always be one of the best lead singers in the metal genre.

Changing a beloved singer rarely ever works out well for a band. There are only two examples i can think of where it did work. First was Brian Johnson taking the helm for AC/DC after Bon Scott drunk himself to an early grave, and the second is Ronnie James Dio taking over when Ozzy left to go solo.

@@fireball8767 umm, what? Heaven and Hell + Mob Rules both outsold Technical Ecstasy + Never Say Die, both of which are considered the weakest of the Ozzy era albums. After Sabotage the band was already slipping in sales. In fact the last two with Ozzy barely charted outside the UK and the US, with the band only achieving Gold status in the US. Whereas with Heaven and Hell + Mob Rules the band's popularity increased again and the band went Gold in Canada both times, which hadn't been done since Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Platinum/Gold in the US respectively, and Gold/Silver respectively in the UK.

Absolutely a classic masterpiece of rock history: Dio joining Black Sabbath (after Iommi had kicked Ozzy out of the band), and recording one of the best albums ever! Hands down some of the best work from Iommi, Butler, Ward, and of course Ronnie. Had met RJD at a Blue Murder album release party years later, he was one of the coolest musicians I'd ever met! On a completely different note, I was in an auto accident right around the same time this album was released and tragically my brothers girlfriend died in the accident, the song playing at the time -"Die Young"... my older brother bought this album and I was like, "no Ozzy? it must suck!" then he played it. I was enraptured! By "Children of the Sea" I was hooked, by "Wishing Well" I was like "Ozzy who?" Every song a quality piece of pure elemental rare METAL!

That's why Ozzy worked so hard on Blizzard.

It must’ve been scary for them. They had to deviate from Ozzy, and it really Paid off. This Album here is truly unlike any other, and it’s perfect. Ronnie and Tony knew they had to change, and they created something extraordinary.

What's funny is that Dio told in an interview that the audience during the shows was flipping him off when he just joined Black Sabbath.

@@Rojomanzana438 no surprise. Inevitable move to change it up though.
