Tony Iommi was the riff-meister in his day. This is 1972 when a lot of people were still walking around wearing San Franciscan flowers behind their ears. They withered rapidly when confronted with this onslaught. The flowers, I mean, not the people. Eardrums never vibrated the same way after the Volume 4 album...

Black Sabbath's last album with Ozzy from '78 Never Say Die, great album that got forgotten though I didn't forget it. The title song opening the album is straight rock n roll but short. You gotta hear the 2nd song "Johnny Blade" it will blow your mind not only musically but lyrically. The whole side one is great, the next song Jr's eyes then Hard Road. But you gotta hear Johnny Blade and listen to the storie of Johnny. You will not be disappointed, it will get you talking about Johnny's plight. Please don't let me down, I want to see you both react to this one!

Vol 4 saw them branch out beyond the doomier sound they were known for, but it was still heavy in places. I do wish on the heavier songs they'd kept Rodger Bain as producer (Iommi produced this album), as he got that sludgy tone that hasn't really been replicated on any Sabbath album since - though they still had incredibly heavy songs on that album - Wheels of Confusion, the intro riff to Cornucopia and the bonecrushing Under The Sun are three of the heaviest of the Ozzy era. I love this album - it was the one that got me into Sabbath at the age of 4 in the early 80s- and I've been a Sabs fan ever since.
