Welcome to the most underrated show that ever to exist on television

I remember when it ran concurrently with GoT, I thought it would be crap because it was produced by Starz and I couldn't fathom anything being as good as GoT. Then I remember seeing that the show ended at season 4 and thought that to be a kind of validation that the show sucked. I picked up Black Sails during this summer and holy crap... I'll never judge a book by its cover ever again. This show is spectacular, part of me wishes it would have been longer, but the other part recognizes that trying to milk it would have probably damaged the whole legacy of the show. These writers and directors are incredible, and unlike some other writers and directors, who shall remain nameless, they didn't rely on the author of the books to set the story, pace, etc. Truly remarkable.

Silver got physically weakened this episode, but socially far stronger - his crew saw his sacrifice for them, and they will be fucking loyal to him from this moment on. In a vital way, his power grew substantially despite the amputation. I love that dichotomy.
@ner0p4 жыл бұрын
This is very much the case, although Silver's wit has always been his strongest point. From the character's standpoint, this will harden him and embolden him to take action in situations where his former self would have been much more cautious of the outcome.
@StopReadingMyNameOrElse4 жыл бұрын
That is Silvers character at his very core. By Treasure Island hes sacrificed so much, just to keep himself going. "You give up a few things, chasing dreams."
@pininolfg4 жыл бұрын
I also love how silver is completely ambiguous to this fact until he’s not and when he comes to this realization finally in seeing the loyalty his men have for him . it effects him substantially. Almost like he’s never truly experienced that kind of love or comradery.
@ner0p4 жыл бұрын
In one of the cast interviews someone says that it was fun and terrifying to work with actor Toby Stephens (Flint). I think 2 or 3 fellow actors shared that sentiment, they said it was transfixing how his expression transformed once the director yelled "action"; like he was actually Flint. I haven't seen much from Toby, but he's a hell of an actor in this one.
@lucylastic4 жыл бұрын
He is good in most of his roles that Ive seen, he is up there with people like Iain Glenn(Jorah). and Liam Cunningham(Davos)SOlid british actors, of course he should be good, his mum is Maggie Smith and his Father is Robert Stephens
@ner0p4 жыл бұрын
The only other thing I watched with Toby in it was "And Then There Was None", an adaptation from an Agatha Christie's novel. The show is pretty good and short for those into whodunnit's. Toby splits the screen with a lot of other actors and isn't at the center stage like he is in Black Sails though.

Vane must really respect Flint if he's going through all this trouble to rescue him.
@ner0p4 жыл бұрын
Flint is one of the most powerful pirates, and as Vane put it in the previous episode: "Nassau is strongest when she's feared, (...) she may never be feared again" - respect aside, it shows Vane's strategical genius that is so often overshadowed by his brutality.

@@Drewe223 Thieving, murdering, reaving, and raping is the pirates' way of life and if Flint represents that, then I would've left him and Vane to get the noose.
@ner0p4 жыл бұрын
@@dwnkaomwn3953 I'm not sure how that would fit into the narrative. A pirate saving another pirate for the sake of pirates seems to me the obvious route from the perspective of... well, pirates. If anything, this episode and a couple others go on to show that what separates civilized people from pirates are wigs and facade. We get a glimpse of this in the crowd's primal reactions, from stoning the corpse of Barlow to the hangings in England, where James explains to Thomas that people need monsters to feel better about themselves, their flaws, their mortality, and their own sins.

Long John Silver, Flint and Billy Bones are not historical pirates like Charles Vane and Hornigold. They are characters from 'Treasure Island', with this show serving as it's prequel. What I'm trying to say is, yes, Silver in Treasure Island is iconic for having only one leg :)

I love how this finale put basically everybody in an elevated position for season 3, even Silver who finally solidified his place amongst the men. It tied up the previous season's threads nicely and certainly raised the stakes going forward. And yeah, that scene where they were stoning Miranda's body was rough, man people are the worse.

Vane's men didn't use the axe to cut into Silver's leg, but rather they use the back end of the axe to ruin his leg. Only Jack has the ability to mix incompetent, and competent so well.
@ner0p4 жыл бұрын
Wasn't that the intention all along though? If they had used the sharp end of the axe Silver would have bled out in a few minutes instead of agonizing and potentially spilling the beans on the gold's whereabouts.
@azathoth5284 жыл бұрын
I love how Silver has been trying all this time to get away with his plans and just leave his pirate life for good, but the fact that he lost his leg makes him depend on the rest of the crew just like Randall, so the longer he stays there the more part of the crew he becomes
@ner0p4 жыл бұрын
One of the best episodes of the show. Silver losing his left leg was unavoidable to bridge the prequel to Treasure Island. Speaking of which, there are at least 4 characters from this show that make it into the original Treasure Island story line. Another piece of trivia btw, the actor that plays Thomas Hamilton also played a (different) character in the 2012 BBC's sequel (I know, damn time travelers!).
@Drewe2234 жыл бұрын
I hate to be that guy but hinting at characters surviving is spoiling things. Not everyone has read treasure island and saying who is and is not in it directly spoils certain things.

@@Drewe223 I thought that it was unavoidable to not know that this is a prequel to Treasure Island, and roughly what the story is about. Anyway, I redacted that bit, sorry. Btw, I hinted a specific character, the main protagonist of Treasure Island; "character" - singular, not plural.

The joy on Max's face is quite contagious. She's started the series as a figure of desire, then to a survivor, then to a very cynical edgy madame. For that moment at the end of ep. 10 she's left all of that pain and cynicism behind. The joy of shiny things i suppose. I guess she identifies as a magpie hoarding shiny objects :)

Rackham and Bonny are also real pirates from that time, although their story is most probably bent a lot to fit the narrative of the show; but yeah, it's great that they pick a fictional story and make a prequel with this much historical sense to the extent that their direction allows them to.

Mix in some real Caribbean pirates like one Jack (Calico) Rackham and lover Anne Bonny, Charles Vane and (spoilers) Edward "Blackbeard" Teach: and you have Black Sails.

Silver, flint, and the rest of flints crew were all fictional characters from a novel called treasure island. The rest of the characters, however, were real, among them being jack Rackham, Anne Bonnie, Charles Vane, Hornigold, the Guthrie’s, and several others idk if you’ve met yet or not. Their stories are (mostly) accurate too, with the exception of their obvious involvement with fictional characters lol

This just might be my favorite episode of television of the entire past decade. There's been a lot of villainous or morally ambiguous characters that I'd call understandable, sometimes even relatable. But no other episode has ever had me cackling maniacally, screaming, "YES! KILL HIM! KILL THEM ALL!" while someone is laying waste to an entire city. "Civilization" really truly made Flint into their own monster, and I've never felt so vindicated as when he embraces it.
@ner0p4 жыл бұрын
I felt exactly the same way, as most people I guess. That is the greatest thing about the writing of this show where it makes you take the sidw of the "villains", or just switch sides mid-episode, because you feel morally compelled to.

You're right. I have slipped one myself in one of my comments but redacted it after being alerted to it by another person. I know Treasure Island pretty well, and I've also seen this show in its entirety. I can't say that my knowledge of the sequel has harmed in any way my experience with Black Sails, but I would not risk spoiling it for anyone because this show is that good. On a side note, I think you should avoid reading comments at all costs. There is always someone who will slip a spoiler out of enthusiasm or spite, so try to not read them. That's what I do anyway, in a few other instances I also have to avoid newspapers.
