I´m so amazed that you love that show...BUT you have to spare your praises for the show because when you don´t you then will not find the right praising words simply running out of superlatives for what is about to come..because - and I know that is hard to believe - but until now that was all just built up.

Blacksails is the show that answers the question "what if a show has no protagonist and all characters are antagonists?" That's what you get in a world of piracy, everyone cannot be trusted, everyone has skeletons in the closet and have their own agenda. Superb writing.

You know a series is truly an amazing one when your initial first reaction after every single episode of it is instinctively saying „this is such a great show“ and starting to praise the story and character writing. I just love how invested Steven is in flint and this show in general, and hearing him talking about what he wants from this and knowing what comes next, there’s just no way that he’s ever gonna be disappointed by an episode of this

This is exactly what I was hoping for every time I begged them to react to this show. Knowing Steven's love of iconic characters like Jon Snow and Ragnar Lothbrok, I just knew he'd be completed fascinated with Flint!

One of my fav subtle moments of the show was when Flint introduced himself as James McGraw. Toby Stephen’s acting made me believe that Flint had literally transformed back into James in that brief moment in time

Toby successfully brings James back a couple times during this series. You see James when someone talks about Thomas and in the scene after he kills Gates but over time James had to rely on the side of himself that gave Flint the power to do what James couldn't that James damn near fades away entirely.

I swear I find something new to marvel over in every episode of a rewatch of Black Sails, the writing is so good. Billy is particularly fascinating this episode. I could read straight up essays about every character of this show and their individual journey. And as everyone says, it very literally only gets better from here. What a masterpiece. What craft.

Yaaaas! The podcasts with the cast were amazing exactly for this reason, you could feel how connected they were with their characters, I still have the ones of Jessica and Hannah saved, the level of details 👌👌

2:33 why not? Vane has always told the truth. And he has also given his word. If there's anyone you can trust, it's Vane. If he tells you he protects you, then he does that too. If he promises to kill you, he does. Unless something unpredictable happens, he always keeps his promises. 😁

Vane is absolutely the most honest person on the island. He never lies or double crosses like the other characters do.

@@charleyMD17 Very true. He is brutal in the sense that he is a very eye for an eye type person and doesn't let anyone control him after his years as a slave. But when it comes to giving his word as a man he is definitely more honourable than everyone else.

lol Vane does what benefits him, I'm not sure how that translates to trust. He told Abigail she'd be safe, then tells her to write a letter to her father which said if the ransom is not paid her lifeless body will be sent to him. Yea VERY trustworthy. He's a pirate like everyone else, I don't trust him anymore than I trust the others. In fact I trust some of them more than him because I know what they are doing isn't just for themselves but for the future of Nassau.

Charles Vayne 100% loved Elanor but as he stated in previous episodes he recognized the power she held over him because she walked around like she owned the place and wasn't afraid of anyone, even him. He is obsessed with being free from being under anyone's control due to his time as a slave so he struggled with maintaining his image and sense of self with his feelings for her. Elanor also loved him but was obsessed with power and getting back at her father by doing what he couldn't do, control not only the business he started but the wild pirate men that did as they pleased. She struggled to maintain her sense of control and purpose over everyone, including Vayne, and in the end, pulled away from him except on the times shown in the show where she came to him out of selfishness. She used him multiple times and again as shown here in this episode. Out of the two, Vayne showed he was willing to give up a piece of himself in order to accommodate a life with her as long as she did the same. As shown when he took the tower and offered to govern the island with her together by forcing Flint to give up the gold so that no one could threaten them as long as they had it. As Flint pointed out, Vayne's vision secured his and her future's for the short term, perhaps a generation or two after them by just keeping the gold and living their life as is, which is short sighted for the island's future as a whole. Elanor saw this and desired to be the face of a movement that legitimized its existence to the world and thus granting her acclaim for building something so unique and impossible. In this episode, Elanor chose a potential legacy over a simpler life with a man she claimed to love and clearly loved her. Vayne may be brutal in the sense that he does what he likes, when he likes. But he isn't inherently evil by being cruel for the sake of being cruel. He is a very eye for an eye type person and doesn't hesitate to kill anyone outside of a very small inner circle of people unless they betray him in the worst ways.

Glad you guys liked it. Its a slower one, but that reveal at the end (where John punked and played Flint, and, with that lie, basically all the pirates on the island) was so well written and shown that it cant help but make you smile or give you chills. John is ruthlessly elegantly cunning.

I'm so happy how much you guys are enjoying the characters and the writing/story. I ve seen a lot of people unfortunately not appreciating these episodes because there is no action but they are still great and so tense imo. The final episodes of season 2 especially are soo good, can't wait!

I love Black Sails probably fifty times more than I ever loved Pirates of the Caribbean, and yet it's amazing just how often POTC quotes apply to Black Sails. "Not all treasure’s silver and gold, mate." "I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly stupid." "Wherever we want to go, we go. That's what a ship is, you know. It's not just a keel and a hull and sails; that's what a ship needs. Not what a ship is. What the Black Pearl really is, is freedom." "You will always remember this as the day that you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow!"

@@rachelespiritu4215 Nothing encapsulates this more for me than the 1st episode of season 1 where we first meet Flint and we realize the men think him weak because he's educated and this common misconception that pirates weren't educated. I recall a scene from POTC where Elizabeth assumes the same thing and Barbosa it seems often uses that to his advantage. "Elizabeth : Captain Barbossa , I am here to negotiate the cessation of hostilities against Port Royal . Barbossa : There are a lot of long words in there, Miss; we're naught but humble pirates. What is it that you want? Elizabeth : I want you to leave and never come back. Barbossa : I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Means "no". " Likewise I do like the tone and writing in Black Sails more but the POTC (At least the first 3) has some fun and relevant moments.

The thing is Flint couldn't retrieve the gold and go with the plan with Abigail. Can't steal Spain's gold and also want to strike a deal with England (who just ended a war with Spain) for legitimacy in Nassau so Silver probably did him a favor here lol Flint would have had to tell the men that they can't touch the gold which wouldn't have gone very well.

Eleanor IS so much like Flint lol I'm glad you mentioned that because it's often overlooked by reactors. A lot of decisions that she makes are what Flint would make in the same situation but people ignore that because it's just easier to say she betrayed Vane. In fact it was Flint who spurred her after returning when he killed Gates and she asked what happened, he replied " What was necessary". He told her no sacrifice is too great for what they need to achieve and every decision she made since was to ensure her and Flints goals are met. Their partnership is one of my favorite things in the series.

Just finished watching this episode for the first time and couldn't wait to get over here to watch your reactions to it. So good! Everything people are saying in the comments is spot on. This show keeps getting better. Billy really surprised me this episode, in a good way. Max keeps in surprising me every episode, I keep trying to hold on to my mistrust of her due to her cunning and wicked wit, waiting for her to manipulate Anne for her own gain, but all she seems to do is take care of Anne, and Jack by extension! It amazes me, and it makes me very endeared to her despite myself. Still part of me waiting for her to try to drive a wedge between Jack and Anne, and if she does I'll be pissed, but at he moment she keeps proving me wrong and making me like her. I need a reunion for Jack and Anne sooner rather than later. And of course Johnny Silver has one more trick up his sleeve 😂 Also, I don't understand why Mr Guthrie was in a wagon going home late at night in the fog so soon after his daughter so royally fucked over the most violent pirate currently residing on New Providence Island, and as such I kinda think he deserves what's coming for him.

Why wouldn't you trust Vane? When has he ever lied or betrayed...anyone? He's an honest dude, and when he's against you, he attacks you straight on and doesn't make these deceitful plans to backstab anyone. He's totally fine with stabbing you right in the face.

Good reaction. Even though Ronald D. Moore is a well-known TV showrunner, I still believe he is still vastly underrated. The proof of that is how Nikki and Steven have gone from distrusting/ disliking Vane and Flint to being pretty much joining team Vane and Flint. Get ready for the long hair and the dirt bath Steven!

Welp, we finally get the answer to if Flint threw Billy overboard in season 1 and no one cares anymore. 🤣 Billy is noticeably darker on his return. I think you can put a fork into Eleanor and Vane's relationship. Flint is one of the world's most feared pirates yet he's scared to talk to a teenage girl. Toby Stephens is so freaking good in those scenes. I love that you guys really get the show and are enjoying it. Buckle up for the rest of the season.

You two seem to forget that photographs didn't existed at that time. 😅 How would anyone who hasn't personally met Flint would know how he looks like? Of course Abigail wouldn't know. She only knows him from tales of people who hate him for being a pirate. I can say this now because I know you have already finished the show: In a later episode we get a good insight of how pirates were depicted in the society. Merciless murderers with no manners and no sense or care for what is right or wrong. Some of them (like Ned Lowe) are like this but many of them are just men who didn't see another way of surviving.

I know alot of people hate Eleanor, i completely disagree. She does what she has to do to get ahead, like literally everyone in this show, and yet for some reason she's the only one that gets so much hate for doing so. So many fans of this show single out as being somehow uniquely treacherous, which she simply is not. I think it's got to do with Van being the most beloved, or at least second most, character in the whole show, so her betrayal of him pisses people off more so than the shit Vane or any other character on the show when they do things equally as bad After all, Vane is entirely responsible for her having to resort to doing this in the first place by deliberately asking for a price he knew Flint would never and simply couldn't ever pay in order to get Ashe's daughter, the Man-O-War. There's one other character though who is equally as treacherous as Eleanor and yet doesn't get the sort of hate from fans the way Eleanor did/does, and that's Max. Despite having a beautiful accent, (all the more impressive because the actor playing her actually doesn't have an accent), but i grew really despise her character by the end of the show. Largely because she did the exact same sorta shit Eleanor did while simultaneously acting holier than thou.

Oh sweet Nikki, Vane loves her sonmuch, he’d have let her back in, never would kill her. It was gutting watching that even second watch. She KNEW she was co-signing his death. Can we imagine the person we live most sending us to our likely death?! This is when my hatred for her began. For a lot of the fandom, this was th moment they washed their hands of her. I think your take on Jack’s ability to fight is unfair. Violence is second nature to Vane. He doesn’t need to try for it, it’s his go-to method for solving problems. Jack is an education civilized man and he had to WORK for his position among the pirates. He won that fight against an experienced captain against all odds. That should earn him respect from you IMO.

I forget, you all know that this is based really losely on real events and pirates? Jack Rackham & Anne Bonnie, Charles Vane, John Silver, the history of Nassau... in general the history of the real Pirates of the Caribbean Don't look it up or you will spoil things massive and ruin the ending of the series.

Billy Bones is one of the few Flints men who survives and is actually the one who has the treasure map in the beginning of "Treasure Island". He is not to be messed with for a reason.

Love Vane. Agree with others where they say he's the most honest. He truly loved Elenor (damn I hate her.) He's told everyone the truth. You might not like what he says, but it's all truthful.
