In the city of Pittsburgh and probably other industrial cities with lots of immigrants during the industrial revolution, you'll meet a lot of older people where their more unique ethnic names were changed by teachers in schools or ministers in church. Speaking from only the Slavic background that I know, their birth names like mihal, Jozef, juraj, hanichka, Agnieszka, etc were changed by teachers to be more American, which passed down from their memories to their children. Their goal was to be more American. It's sad since in my city you see a complete die out of ethnic heritage, which of course was spawned by social politics and the collapse of the industrial revolution.
