Except they aren’t southern or country. They are Northern California more in common with the Dead or Jefferson Airplane in terms of roots. Southern is Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, etc. A different animal. You could compare them to The Band, which is another northern band that has a bluesy kind of vibe and could be mistaken for southern.

@@rexvisitor44 And in The Band's case, it's Canadian with the exception of Levon Helm... BUT you'd be right. And don't forget CCR from the perspective of another California band that often has a mistaken origin.

LOL!!! They were basically the "house band" for the Northern California chapter of Hell's Angels. Not classic Southern rock, but certainly in that general "down home" style sound...sort of like Little Feat and The Eagles.

Doug Kirk “Simmons would complete "Black Water" during a subsequent Doobie Brothers' sojourn in New Orleans; a lifelong aficionado of Delta blues, Simmons had first visited New Orleans for a 1971 Doobie Brothers gig: "When I got down there it was everything I had hoped it would be...The way of life and vibe really connected with me and the roots of my music." Simmons cites the song's opening section - see Quote Box to the right - as "my childhood imaginings of the South from reading Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer" while the lyrics subsequent to the first chorus draw on his actual experience of New Orleans: "going down to the French Quarter as often as possible and going into the clubs and listening to Dixieland":[3] the lyric Well if it rains, I don't care/ Don't make no difference to me/ Just take that street car that's goin' uptown was jotted down by Simmons while riding through the University District on the St. Charles Streetcar Line en route to the Garden District in Uptown New Orleans to do laundry: "the sun was shining while it was pouring rain the way it does down there sometimes. And the lyrics just came to me there [on the streetcar]."

The Doobies are straight Rock and Roll to me. That's not to say there isn't some country influence ,but you can say that for half the rock in history because the two genres both came from blues and folk. I'd also add that I so prefer this version of the Doobies over the Michael McDonald era although I'm aware that version sold tons of records.

The 60s and 70s, what a flood of incredible music! So glad I grew up in those times. The unfortunate thing is there are many extremely talented musicians around today, but they can't make money as a band. They hang out on KZfaq and do their thing. The industry badly needs to figure out how musicians can monetize their work in this digital age. I believe great bands will reappear if that happens.

Love the reactions guys.. I think the big difference between the current music (which I think is hyper controlled and mostly made for money) is that the old classic songs are real stories, journeys and emotions.. there's a very human quality to them. That's why we still listen and marvel at them. I was in the music business for 30 years all thru the 70's and eighties and nineties, a GOLDEN era my friends... There is something strangely satisfying about watching you both digging a song that we have listened to for many years. The interesting thing about this song is that it was originally a B-side song. It was never intended to be released as a single but eventually ended up going #1. I've suggested this before but seeing your reaction to Black Water makes me want to see you react to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew". This is another really cool swampy blues tune. Years ago I played that on air while our station was doing a remote. The station owner was out at the customer waiting to go on with a break. This song had been in oldies rotation since the station went on the air but I guess he had never listened to it. While I'm waiting for the song to end so I can put him on air, he tells me in my headphones to get that song off the air and never play it again. He was very Southern Baptist and it offended him apparently.

"Who else sings catfish in a rock song?" Well, Jimi Hendrix did Catfish Blues. Not sure you'd call it a "rock song" because it's definitely blues. Then again, it IS Hendrix, so... yeah... I knew the harmonies in this tune would get you. You really should try the kings of harmony: Crosby, Stills, and Nash - Suite:Judy Blue Eyes, followed by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - Carry On. Those harmonies will melt the whisky glass in your hand.

So here's the thing with the Doobies, their great songs and production. The man that basically discovered the Doobies and produced the vast majority of their albums is the legendary producer Ted Templeman. I just read his incredible autobiography titled: Ted Templeman: a Platinum Producer's Life in Music. Guys and everyone else, if you love the Doobies, this is an absolute f-in read! Trust me, I couldn't put it down. He talks about the formation of the band, how he recorded them in the studio, along with his legendary engineer partner, Donn Landee. These guys also recorded most of the Van Halen albums as well as the legendary Montrose debut album. That's one reason why the Doobie songs sound so good. What a great band, some of the best tunes ever.....college outdoor parties by the lake with kegs, smoke, girls, frisbees and the Doobies...yeah! 😎 🍺
