Some info regarding the Lady Godiva reference (14:00) The legend of Lady Godiva is that her husband, Lord of the area around Coventry, taxed the people very harshly. She constantly complained to him saying he was being unfair, and eventually he said he would lower the taxes the day she rode around the town on a horse while naked. So she told everyone to stay indoors and shut their windows, so that she wouldn't be seen, and proceeded to trott around the town while covered only by her long hair. One guy ignored her request, and peeked out of his window, and became known as Peeping Tom, which is where the saying comes from. But yeah, because she did as her husband said, he kept his word, and lowered the taxes.

There are various other theories too but nobody knows for sure.

There's four main series/seasons of Blackadder and each series moves forward in time. It's basically the same characters throughout - they're meant to be the descendents. The first series has Blackadder as being stupid, but the rest they made him the only "normal" one and almost everyone else as being simple. You definitely need to watch them though at some point - the ending of the fourth series is one of the most heart touching moments in sitcom

The format of Blackadder is that each series takes place in a different era and there were 4 series in total. Series one took place in the Middle Ages, series two was the Elizabethan Era, series three was the Georgian era and series four was World War 1. The clip at 13:00 was from Series one, which you can probably tell is kind of the 'odd one out' in terms of style. It was much grander in scale, with a larger cast, a lot of outdoor scenes and filming on location in old castles and grand houses. The humour was quite different too, it was a 'meaner' type of humour. For series two onwards, they scaled back the production a lot to keep costs down, and started filming it in sets, which were a lot cheaper, and had a smaller, more focused cast. Also, Ben Elton came on to the writing team so the jokes became a lot more refined and well written.

The first series - The Black Adder - was written by Rowan Atkinson and Richard Curtis. It was very expensive and was almost the only series. For series two - Blackadder II - Ben Elton joined Curtis as writer, replacing Atkinson. It only got made because they cut the budget and made it as a standard multi-camera sitcom with a studio audience and using a small number of sets. In the first series Blackadder was stupid and Baldrick was the clever one. They changed this for series 2 - 4 and the show was better for it. As others have mentioned, each series is set in a different period of history, moving forward in time with each iteration.

Fantastic. As I’m sure you’ll find out soon Series 1 is set in the late 1400s where he’s the son of the King (this is alternate history as it’s a fictional King); Series 2 in the late 1500s where he’s a noble in the court of Queen Elizabeth I; series 3 is late 1700s / early 1800s where Blackadder is butler to the Prince Regent George (son of George III); and series 4 is set in 1917 during WW1 where he’s an infantry captain. In each series he’s supposed to be a descendant of the character in the earlier series, all part of the Blackadder family dynasty. Each series though his social status declines - but he’s always in the middle.

Lady Hamilton was Lord Nelson’s mistress. And, his Lordship lost his eye and his arm in battle. So .... there you go. And ... the character of George ... do you recognize Dr. House?? The show goes through several seasons. Each season has characters in different times in history. First is the Medieval period, then the Elizabethan period, then the Regency, and then WWI. Blackadder is the evil son of a king in the first, a member of the court in the second, the king’s butler in the third, and a soldier in the fourth. Blackadder and Baldrick are the two characters who are consistently in each season in more or less the same relationship. You really need to watch the whole thing.

I did history in school but don't remember much beyond what you'd gain from documentaries. However, Blackadder and Goodnight Sweetheart are great ways to learn tiny (if a little inaccurate) pieces of history. Which reminds me. Watch Goodnight Sweetheart. It's brilliant. On another note made me laugh/surprised that you didn't recognise Rik Mayall as Flashheart as Richie from Bottom. In answer to your question about timelines. Season 1 is the dark ages. Season 2 is during the reign of Queen Elizabeth the First. Season 3 is the Era of the Scarlett Pimpernel. Season 4 is World War One. Theres also a great christmas special that parodies Scrooge/A Christmas Carol. And a movie made for the millennium set new years 1999.

There were 4 seasons of Black Adder and each season took place in a different period of English history. Middle Ages, Renaissance, Regency, and in 1917 in the trenches of WW1. Great series and my favorite seasons were 2 and 4. The Mr. Bean character that he did in the 90s was quite the departure from the biting wit of the dialogue in the Black Adder series relying on sight gags and silent comedy.

This compilation takes clips from all the series which were broadcast over years and years - you did very well to make sense of it. Each successive series was set in a new era, in chronological order, but each series included a part for most of the actors who’d played a central character before. A character called Blackadder, a man with a venomous streak in his personality (like a snake/an adder), played by Rowan Atkinson, appears in each series, but though his social status/context changes with the century, his personality is basically the same in each series. Blackadder is a courtier in Medieval and Elizabethan times, but he is a butler to Prince George (Hugh Laurie) in late 18th century, and a low-ranking officer in the last series set in the trenches in France in World War 1. Baldrick, played by Tony Robinson, is mostly cast as his manservant, but in the 20th century series is a private in the army. Hugh Laurie is a fellow officer by then...

P.S. Josh - has anyone suggested you take a look at some clips of Hugh Laurie & Stephen Fry working together in their own series? They happen to feature playing characters in Blackadder, but you may like some of their sketches, or their TV adaptation of “Jeeves & Wooster” (based on comic novels originally set in 1920s England and the USA).

Blackadder had 4 seasons, each season plays in a different era, so that's why it seems to jump all over the place. It'll make sense once you watch it. The funny thing about Blackadder is that he's a victim of his own pride.. he calls everyone stupid, but all his scheming to get rich over the backs of others always backfire hilariously. That's the real fun of the show for me. And the supporting cast is brilliant as well and really make the show into more than just a Rowan Atkinson vehicle.

Nah, I'm a veteran "Blackadder" viewer and I agree with the man: these are all just elaborate ways of telling a person they're dumb. Like most British humour creations, the general narrative is just a way to include jokes and sketches. Although the first episode of "Blackadder II" is a fine example of a good narrative and moreover, it can be watched seperately. All episodes of a particular series are seperate entities so no need to watch them in order for most part. With the exception of course of the final "Goodbyeee" episode of "Blackadder Goes Forth"

If I was to rank my favourite episodes it would be a majority mixture of series 3 and 4 with a few episodes of season 2. They definitely got better as they went on and such an amazing cast. Blackadder is in my top 3 British comedies, only fools is another so I'm really enjoying the Patreon videos pal. Eddie and Rich from bottom both make an appearance in Blackadder goes forth, one of the best episodes. Rich also appears in series 2. Would love this to be the next on Patreon.
