You should do Annie Bonny next, she was an irish pirate, she steered the Caribbean. Very little is known about her life but if you read the book by Captain Charles Johnson; A General History of the Pyrates he talks about her in depth. She was one of very little woman pirates in recorded history. Another female pirate you will encounter is Mary Read another infamous female pirate of the time. Bonny and Mary Read (along with Bonny's husband k/a Calico Jack) stole a ship and began pirating. They plundered fishing boats and merchant ships in and around the Caribbean. Please make a pirate series :) This was everything!

Two pirate captains that had served together on the same ship in their youth before acquiring ships of their own met one day in port. The first pirate said, "last time I saw you, you still had both hands," indicating the other pirate's hook. The second pirate replied, "yeah, I was in a fight with the captain of a Dutch merchantman of the coast of Cuba when he cut off my hand. Last time I saw you, you still had both legs," he added pointing to the first pirate's peg leg. The first pirate said, "we were running down a French sloop in the Spanish Main when a cannon ball came in and knocked my leg off. Last time I saw you, you had both of your eyes," he added referring to the second pirates eye patch. The second pirate said, "two weeks after I lost my hand I was on deck and looked up and a gull pooped in me eye. I hadn't gotten used to the fact that I had a hook yet. Arrgh!"

Interesting how Blackbeard's theatrics were more less pragmatic: intimidate them enough and you win without a fight.

I would love to see you cover Zheng Yi Sao, also known as Ching Shih. She was the most prolific pirate captain of all time, and she was only 22 years old. Combine all ships and crews of the nine pirate captains below her on the top ten list, and you STILL wouldn't have enough to beat her. Commanding more than 1,500 vessels, and over 80,000 sailors, she blows the rest of them right out of the water. (Pun intended.)

I'm from Wilmington NC but my ancestors came from England in the 1700s to currituck which is another coastal town full of pirate shenanigans. I loved hearing how you pronounce Ocracoke, Beaufort and Topsail. Here we pronounce it "oak-ra-coke", "bow-furt" and "top-sull" very southern American lol I live in the mountains now but I still miss the smell of the pines and the sandy black soil

How fun! My son just did his English GCSE oral presentation on Blackbeard, so I recently learned quite a bit about him, and I found it so interesting, though you've certainly filled in some blanks. There's an engraving of Blackbeard that I'm sure inspired Johnny Depp's ridiculous and hilarious gait in the Pirates franchise.

I grew up close to where Blackbeard’s ships sank (pronounced “b-YOU-ford” by locals), and remember digging for “pirate treasure” on the beaches there with my friends.

Another interesting fact for you, there is a pub here called the Llandoger Trow and this is said to be the very location where Daniel Defoe met the Royal Navy Officer than inspired Robinson Crusoe and it also was the inspiration for the Admiral Benbow pub in Treasure Island (Robert Louis Stevenson). You should consider a trip to Bristol if you've not been before! I really enjoyed this video! I am currently reading a book called 'And a Bottle of Rum' which I bought for my home cocktail bar (renovating a 1900 Victorian terrace) and it mentioned Blackbeard + pirates as part of the history of Rum!

Are we gonna get a video on Capt. Bartholomew Roberts, the most successful pirate of the Golden Age of Piracy. He didn't have the demonic imagery that Blackbeard did but had a pretty interesting story being brought on a pirate crew as a slave and being voted into the captaincy and then looting the high seas while giving Sunday services.

Fascinating to learn that wild eyes, long beards and carrying multiple guns was equally likely in Bristol, UK, 1700s as it is where I'm from in Bristol, Tennessee, 2023.

An aside: I wonder whether, in naming his ship _Queen Anne's Revenge_ , Blackbeard was proclaiming support for the Jacobite cause? (Queen Anne was the last Stuart monarch)

I'm from Hampton, Va. where the fleet that was sent to hunt down Blackbeard sailed from and returned to. His head was paraded around town to much fanfare and the trials of his captured crew were held here. After some of his treasure that was captured was used to pay the pirate hunters the rest of the money was distributed among the residents of Hampton to compensate them from the depredations Blackbeard had caused. A few years ago I did some renovation work on a house in a subdivision built on land that was owned by one of his supposed wives. The homeowner told me how during the building of the subdivision the workers would often dig around looking for buried treasure. They occasionally find people digging up the woods nearby today looking for some of Blackbeard's treasure.

I have a strong curiosity as to why there seem to be so many pirates originating from the Rhode Island colony specifically. Just seems like an odd repetition. I'm also curious about piracy in the late 18th and 19th century after the golden age.

I don't agree on "...his family enslaved people.". Europeans almost never actively enslaved people. Sure, we had our serfs and credit takers, who were in a lot of cases equally worse off, but otherwise we bought slaves from active enslavers and put them to work. The enslavers where almost always Natives, Africans and first and foremost Arabs. Is it a nice thing to buy people from them or dealing with them in general? No. But it's still not "enslaving people".
