Black Diamond Presents: BD Employee Brent Barghahn Attempts Ring That Bell (5.13R) in Bells Canyon

Brent Barghahn has rope soloed the Nose in a day, claimed free ascents of both Golden Gate (VI 5.13b) and Freerider (VI 5.13a) on El Cap, and established a big-wall 5.13 first ascent Kyrgyzstan. Not to mention he’s accomplished all this while working full-time behind a desk as a Design Engineer at BD. Perhaps most crucial to his big wall success, however, are his after-work sessions on the local Wasatch granite. For the past few years, Brent has worked through the grades, repeating classic testpieces and also adding his own first ascents in the local canyons up to 5.13d. Last November, Brent felt ready to attempt a route that had gained a near-mythical status-the then unrepeated Ring That Bell (5.13R). For me it doesn’t add anything if it’s hard to get to. I’m a climber, not a car driver or hiker.

@@Mike-oz4cv Then be limited by your own restrictions. Lots of show piece routes or unique routes are good hikes in. Hell, to access a third of the crags in the Canadian Rockies its a 50min to 1 hour long hike. Don't even ask about some of the alpine climbs some can be full days in.

Ditto! It says "flash attempt," but then there are multiple cuts to him with gear placed and clipped above him. No doubt a very hard climb, but the beginning subtitle is misleading...

If it’s this route is that dangerous with bad gear placements, then why not just add bolts and avoid unnecessary death and injuries. I don’t get why we insist on climbing being unsafe and inaccessible.

What's the deal with not adding bolts to make routes safer and more accessible to climb? If you feel against using potentially life saving hardware and climbing in the "intended" way, why not just skip the bolt then? A bit bummed climbing culture doesn't work to mitigate risk and directly works to maintain it.

Since you appear to not be very knowledgeable in regards to climbing in general, I won't rip you a new one for this comment. For every heady trad climb like this one, there are 100+ sport climbs with a bolt every 5-10 feet. Not every climb has to be safe or accessible for everyone.

@@tallasianguy42 great summation and reply. @Nic Benson: obviously we are all lucky enough to live in an era when we can arbitrarily go out and have fun and as much adventure as one can deal with. I myself love developing safe and well protected routes that I hope and intend will get repeated often (i.e. "plaisir style"), but nothing would be the same if every route was in that style. The simplest answer is, "I guess it sounds like you won't be trying this one, eh crusher? There's plenty of other routes though, so don't cry too much."

@boldering I was just having a conversation no need to be so short lighten up buddy. It just seems to me that the possibility of decking from 50 ft should be removed. A climb can still get spicy without being life threatening.

Sorry, potentially decking on the last crux above the questionable cams is lame in an era of COVID-19 and BLM etc (just to take our own country as an example) when so many humans are just struggling to live or get basic justice. Route should be renamed "White People's (invented) Problems". You can still make for plenty of spice overall on the route by adding a solid bolt there. Getting killed on this route at the pinnacle of your youth by a crystal breaking would be the height of lame when so many just want to live to see the sun rise again.

I think bolting the crux would take away from the route's grade slightly, as he does say that their decent gear above it. I also don't think that privilege has got anything to do with him climbing this route, as the rock doesn't care what color he is. Thiers a climber over here in the UK called Trevor Massiah whos got a cracking video of himself climbing T rex at Gogarth which is E4 5c, he's even climbed routes up to E6. I don't get you wanting to rename the route to "white people's (invented) problems" I think that's bit daft, I can't imagine you having had this type of response if it were a person of another race climbing this route. And you never know those cams might have held a fall.

Any route, at any time, could be named "white people's (invented) problems"...climbing is stupid and pointless. No one needs to do it. Its entire existence is an invented problem. One can both support this unnecessary pursuit and ALSO support BLM and our fellow humans. Nothing is binary. Everything exists on a spectrum.

@@ceesawful I think it would be taking away from the crux to bolt that specific spot because you could still claim the route even if youve used it. Maybe that might get the route downgraded because its taking away some of that pychologicall stress, but as you said the routes quite remote and the chances of it getting bolted are slim. I do complety agree with you as I would rather be messing around on bolted routes and enjoying the climbing more than stressing out over decking.
