I must admit: when it comes to leather tools, I kind of get set in my ways and don't give new tools/methods their fair chance.
Recently I started buying tools that I've seen other leather workers using and these 5 are ones that I wish I had tried way sooner. Especially thr damn needle bottles.

My name is Tim. Thanks for checking out my KZfaq channel. I started leather working in July of 2020. My passion for leather work quickly grew as I learned and practiced. I received a ton of help from the leather working community when I was new and now I aim to pass on what I learn to other beginner leather workers. I post weekly leather craft videos that include tutorials, free pdf pattern templates, how to's, tips and tricks, and any other leather work content that I think could help you out!

I use those 50 cc bottle for paint (as well tokolnole) and they’re great for precise paint lines when outlining stamped letters and numbers. Came with different gauge tips and the 25 gauge was the smallest and worked very well for that application. Just have to wash those particular sizes after each use or the paint will dry and clog. I do like the idea of using for glue as well.

Great tips! The silicon brush and needle bottle are truly must have items for leather work. save a ton of headache too. I don't have use for the jigs and the punches as the ones I use are working great as I mostly make watch straps. But I am planning on getting a high quality knife overall, not just for skiving as I've seen that they are worth it. The thing I do with my knives is, since they dull easily as I think the hardening has done been done to a good degree (what was I expecting from a 5$ knife) I sharpen them every day or before every time I am starting a project, helps a lot.

Hi Tim, Thanks for your great videos. I wanted to say I'm a knife guy and do all kinds of sharpening everything from a hapstone R2 to Japanese whetstones to diamond plates. I use Arkansas stones on my cheap Amazon skiving knife. Most often I strop with gunny juice and Beaver craft yellow compound. Long story short the cheap skiver is normally the sharpest knife I have. It's more important to strop often than it is to spend a lot of money on a nice skiver with basically the same steel. Unless you know the steel is a good steel like 14c28n D2 etc. It's probably just another version of stainless with a moderate 57 hrc. All that said it's just nice to have a luxury item. Your point I assume. Stay on the strop with that new knife and enjoy.

Hey your videos are awesome!! I like how you explain why you like a product and how it's helped either in time or ease. One of your older videos you talked about the Sinabroks stitching punches. I have a bicep injury and using chisels hurts when punching and trying to pull out of 5oz and sometimes stacked three layers. Would those punches still work good or would the slanted irons from them be better ? I use 1mm thread now but would switch to a smaller if it would help as well. Thank you, and keep the videos coming !!

The cheaper ones are great. They could be a it heavier but they're aluminum. I was thinking this morning though if you were making a big batch of wallets or whatever. If you clamped one of those to your table, it'd be perfect for rapid fire gluing and lining up a bunch of pieces.

Tim: I was just turned onto a new kind of tool from Crimson Hides. It looks like a cocktail fork but isn't a cocktail fork. It is a dedicated stitch line marker. It only has two tines and they sell all kinds of different widths. You can use it to mark stitching lines from the edge of the leather or you can turn it over and use to to make a decorative 'trough'. Basically, these tools do the same thing as calipers but never need adjustment. I just bought a 3mm tool for my common stitch lines. Check it out. Nigel Armitage has a KZfaq video showing what they do.

Although I have a version of those bottles with little silicone covers for the tip, I found that after dispensing the glue, if you set the bottle down for a couple minutes and then slowly squeeze it until air comes out, it clears any glue that might remain in the needle tip. Also, you can clear them with a fine sewing needle if they are really clogged.

That was my comment. I have wood carving knives and about 50+ pocket knives and the cheap skiver really takes an incredibly sharp edge with a strop and compound. I take the chips and dings out on some Arkansas stones and the strop to polished mirror with 1 micron gunny juice. I have up to 8000k whetstones and diamond venevs but honestly the Arkansas stones work great on cheap china steel.

Sounds like your skiving knife just needs sharpening. It can occur that knives are hardly sharpenable, often cheap stainless tools with high chromium. Some leather knives are for good reason designed to be stropped every cut or so. This is a real thing with many knives from scythes and razors to head knives for leather. It is also the case that there are alternatives to all these tools that have fierce edge holding. So in the case of razors and scythes, there are Japanese versions with tremendous edge holding, but then they lack certain other qualities, and one has to be able to sharpen their extremely hard steel. I use one of those break-off knives for certain leather jobs. Just bought a pack of 10 for 3 dollars. To keep them on point I don't break off the blade, I sharpen it when it gets dull with diamond lapping compound, on leather. A few strokes and it is good to go again. One has to sharpen the moment the knife starts to feel dull, or the sound of the cut changes.
