For as much as I love Crash Team Racing, it wasn't the only 90s kart racer that influenced my obsession with this sub-genre of racing game.
So let's take a look at another culprit.

I vaguely remember playing this game in a dentist’s waiting room when I was much younger. Naturally, I wasn’t very good at it. But there was also a Ratchet & Clank game and a SEGA crossover tennis game, both of which I was surprisingly a little bit better at. Though admittedly, the former was with some help from my older sister.

I've kind of had the same experience but in the dentist's waiting room I've went to (its in Guntersville AL, if you're wondering) had different games, I can put all the ones I remember in a list here: (Also most of these were PS2 stuff) Crash Twinsanity (played this one the most) The Spongebob SquarePants Movie Game (Maybe BFBB I can't tell if I'm misremembering things) A Lego Batman game (probably the first one) Crash Nitro Kart (but only once was it actually available to play)

The nostalgia I felt watching this. To this day whenever Rare comes up in conversations, especially the N64 era. I mention how much I loved this game against my family. Missiles weren't a downgrade for me, I loved swiftly punishing a specific cousin the instant he passed me. Every. Time.(At least try) Yet what does still drive me up a wall is when others assume I only liked Conker thanks to a later title. I was easily made hyper as a kid and such characters drew me in easily, at least high energy. That and looking back it seems I liked balanced racers the most in the kart games I played.

This game is absolutely incredible and would be a contender for my favorite kart racing game of all time if it weren't for the fact that it loses a bit of replay value upon being mastered. I recently competed with a friend of mine to race through the adventure mode and in-practicing for that race, I ended up mastering the mechanics and sadly don't have much reason to replay it unless I were to get into speedrunning (which I very well might). Great review! Always happy to see this game get the love it deserves

@Brandon Wray It has you playing as cartoon children with big heads and no arms and legs, and is a brutally hard game that requires mastery in order to fully beat all tournaments. It also has some of the best visuals you'll find in a PS1 game, and the soundtrack is solid. Mixed with great control, a great sense of speed, and fun level design, and you have a high quality kart racer that's fun to come back to.

@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 If you want to see an even more impressive racing game on the PS1 (and a bit obscure i think) check it out the port of Hydro Thunder from the arcade. Is a miracle seeing the console running something like that. The controls were good and you have to know the shortcuts to win the races. Is not a kart racer however, but it is one of those games that is easy to pick up and a bit hard to master and i just wanted to recommend it.

I got Diddy Kong Racing when it was only a few months old; I was 10 and finished it at 11 (100 percenting the game took a long time, T.T. times were hard as hell for me). I remember the game pretty vividly for being so long ago, and the Frosty Village song made me smile from the nostalgia. Wizpig 1 was absolutely insane. About as difficult as you can be without simply being impossible. I was stuck on him for months and my number of attempts probably reached the triple digits. I wasn't even excited when I finally beat him, I was dumbstruck. The reward was well worth it, though - I loved the "false ending" thing Rare was fond of during the N64 days like with Banjo-Kazooie. T.T. was that good? Huh. I remember being completely disappointed with him since I found him so difficult to control; Pipsy and Tiptup were the only characters I ever used due to their tight controls. Since I was a dumb little 11 year old, though, I was probably wrong. I'm still disappointed Donkey Kong Racing was never released. E3 2001 was the first one I ever followed and I thought the game looked cool.

Now this is my childhood game and my absolute favorite game on the N64! I remember so many fond memories of discovering all the little secrets as a kid using my man Tiptup. I never managed to beat first Wizpig as a kid since I never figured out the secret boost technique, but that never hampered my enjoyment of the game. If this somehow makes it onto the N64 NSO Online, then my cchildhood will be complete and I'll be happy! (Also if Nintendo lowers the price as $50 a year is way too steep.)

My siblings and I played DKR so much we wore out the battery on cartridge. I believe this was game we got on our N64 along with Mario Kart 64. The idea that the tiger wrote Diddy a letter is cute. I always thought it would be cool to expand on the 64 games world and make them exist in Same universe. For example I always felt banjo tooie and DK64 feel like same universe anyways. So a universe with DK and their whole world + banjo Kazooie &world + conker+ mario and yoshi + timber + crash and you have an awesome universe with plenty of cool heros, villains and ideas to use for a story.. could also do infinite number of team ups

I'd also like to explore mario world more in 3D. Mario 64 takes place in the castle, odyssey let's you visit the grounds of the castle again. But most the levels in those games are paintings or different worlds. I want to explore the world outside that castle, the world mario lives in and the first 4 games take place in. With Koopas and all that, even the Rex. But a real open world

I know that a lot of people like to compare Diddy Kong Racing to Mario Kart 64, but if you really think about it Crash Team Racing has way more in common with Diddy Kong Racing then Mario Kart 64. Think about it both Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing have a story involving some alien. (Wizpig and Nitros Oxcide) - Both have a hub world. - Both have boss battles that involve racing including the final boss. - Both have lots of collectables. - Both having you need to collect something in order to reach the final boss. - Both got remakes. (Though calling Diddy Kong Racing DS a remake is a whee bit of a stretch.)

I somewhat recently finally played through all of adventure mode for the first time, and I actually found the second Wizpig race much harder than the first. I didn't think the first one was very hard at all, it only took me a few attempts, while the second took quite some time. The car is the easiest vehicle to handle, and all that race demands of you is to hit all the boosts, it's really not a hard track, so it doesn't take much time to get a good feel for it. While the second race, there a lot more to consider with the plane, elevation is now a factor, there's more room for error, especially since you'll actually have obstacles to avoid. Sure you can get powerups, but I think the first race not having them made it easier just because it made it simple. Just hit all the boosts and you're good.

I liked it more than MK64, but that's in part because I played games by myself more often and DKR has a more robust single-player game (I would say MK64 is better as a multiplayer game). True, but at the same time, CTR's hub world also has its various areas sectioned off by beating each boss, which you enter by getting a certain amount of trophies (and just like Mario 64, you get a key from said boss to unlock the next section). So in a roundabout way, it still works.

I will keep saying this until the end of time, I love Diddy Kong Racing and consider it my all-time favourite game. Also I somehow never knew about that shortcut in Frosty Village until now Also also, I would disagree about Wizpig being the hardest part. Wizpig is very hard, but by that point I already knew about the trick and was able to beat him after a few attempts. Bubbler 2 and Smokey 2 however..........

Every person says the Wizpig 1 fight is harder. That may be true in the original (idk never played), but in DS Wizpig 2 has those lasers that always hit you after you pass the giant head.

Nice vid. But I felt like Wizpig 2, was way harder for me, lol. Maybe I'm just bad on the plane.

MAn I remember Diddy Kong Racing. It was one of the first games I got on the N64, and is still one of my favorite racing games to this day. The DS remake was ok but not as good as the original. I hope this game gets ported to the virtual consoles someday because I'd love to play it again.
