MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016) delivers full Thunderbolt 3 performance on all four ports. MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) supports Thunderbolt 3 at full performance using the two left-hand ports. The two right-hand ports deliver Thunderbolt 3 functionality, but have reduced PCI Express bandwidth.

still over $2,500 for a quad core? I am operating the 2015 MBP with quad core but now highly considering the XPS 15 due to it being $1800 with 6 core, higher core frequency and also a 4k touchscreen(not much to care for the touchscreen, but resolution is king). Something to think about. Oh. Quad core 13" $1800 for the XPS13 if you can get over the ecosystem.

Thunderbolt cables, lengths and types matter. A lot. Passive 0.5m (ie. the one in the box) = 40GB/s Passive 1M - 2M (ie. cheap ones) = 20GB/s Active 2M (ie. expensive ones) = 40GB/s Active Optical 60M (ie. $$$$$$$) = 40GB/s Pick the wrong cable and length, and you won't be able to use everything at once without facing *big* issues; especially with that Thunderbolt display...

Very important to note that it's not an RX580, it's a Radeon Pro 580: the same GPU found in the higher end iMacs which is actually slower than an RX580.
@DonnydeOlim
@DonnydeOlim 6 жыл бұрын
Oh really??? What a shame... But I need to know something else, can I change the 580 later for a better GPU card??? Maybe Vega chips or even nVidia GTX 1070-1080-Titan GPUs??? If not, should be better to buy the Razer Core X for 299 Euros!!!
@IgnoreSolutions
@IgnoreSolutions 6 жыл бұрын
Nope, it's completely sealed. So in about a year it'll be a $700 paperweight. Sonnet makes a good eGPU from what i hear but thanks to the latest versions of High Sierra, any TB3 eGPU is compatible with macOS. if you want to put an nvidia card in though you'll need to do your own tinkering with the web drivers similar to a Mac Pro or Hackintosh.
@santim6413
@santim6413 6 жыл бұрын
+Donny de Olim No, you can't upgrade the card in this eGPU. Also, Nvidia cards aren't supported natively by MacOS like AMD cards are and the latest Mac updates broke Nvidia functionality even more. You'd have to do some tinkering to get them to work. The Razer Core X and a Vega GPU would be your best bet if you want it to work without issue.
@DonnydeOlim
@DonnydeOlim 6 жыл бұрын
Santi M so... this eGPU is a scam, isn’t it??? Tomorrow I would have to throw this complete 699€ unit to the garbage if I need a Vega or 1080/Titan GPU power?!?!? I loved Apple... right now, I just don’t understand it!
@IgnoreSolutions
@IgnoreSolutions 6 жыл бұрын
yup, i appreciate their move forward in bringing official eGPU support and whatnot but this is not a very good attempt at sanctioning one themselves imo. another spit in the face for the pro market, buy a sonnet and a Vega GPU and it'll still be fully supported

Mmm just got one, it's definitely working but the system reports it's presence weirdly. For example, when plugged into a macbook 15" with a 455, the macbook display says it's using the 455 and the lg 5k display says it's using the 580. When using cinebench 4 to test it I can't get cinebench to recognise it, it's constantly defaulting to the 455 no matter what configuration I put it in. Also on the box, it clearly says that it's a 580RX but when you plug it in the system detects it as a 580 Pro. I wonder which one it actually is, because there's a slight performance variance between the 2. The pro is better for compute, the rx is better for gaming. Also when connected directly to laptop without the 5K display, the system still says that it's using the 455.
@alexbusse1215
@alexbusse1215 6 жыл бұрын
Never mind, I'm an idiot, clearly I need to have the display closed and only use an external display. Well that kinda sucks.
@alexbusse1215
@alexbusse1215 6 жыл бұрын
The other strange part is that the macbook 15 455 recognises it at a 580 PRO, the 13 inch 2017 non touch bar recognises it as "AMD Radeon RX Ellesmere Prototype"

I’m trying to decide between the 13” w/ touchbar with upgraded RAM and CPU and the base 15” model. The 15” is $140 more expensive. Which should I get?
@AppleInsider
@AppleInsider 6 жыл бұрын
The base 15" model already has 16GB of Ram, but it's DDR4 2400Mhz RAM (Faster) It also has a 6-core CPU at base that is hands-down the better choice. Even better, it has a dedicated GPU that destroys the 13" Touch Bar GPU. Buy the 15". If you buy from B&H, you don't have to pay for taxes unless you're in NY: bhpho.to/2NPHDvU

What about those of us who have dual 4K display port monitors? I ended up skipping the eGPU for a standard dock. The lack of either a 3rd tb3 port or displayport on this stopped me from jumping in and buying one.... ended up going with a tb3 dock instead and accepting the graphics which were already much better than my previous MacBook Pro

Doesn't look like the loss in performance is all that much, considering there can be up a 40% loss in performance if the same card is used with an external GPU enclosure. If you can do it, I'd like you to benchmark some games as well. All you'd need is a few steam games (or from any other source) that support macOS (some of them even have an inbuilt benchmark, otherwise you can just play them and check framerates) and then you can compare it to some other machine (either a windows machine or any other mac) that has the same GPU without the requirement of external enclosure. PS: I can already see three games, that are very good for benchmarking (come with an internal benchmark) and work on macOS, namely, Metro: Last Light, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. They are pretty cheap and easy to get.

In addition i have a quick question. How important is the size of the egpu RAM. Would a 8gb egpu perform better than a 4gb one. Does the egpu RAM complement the actual MacBook pro RAM. I am am split between an 13 inch with 16gb and a 15 inch with 32gb. I am normally using simultaneously Evernote, mail, Preview, MS Office mainly excel and Parallels for two apps i can not get on MacOS one of which is Excel and and a lot of safari tabs. I thought for my next upgrade to go to 32gb however, as i travel a lot i would prefer the form factor of a 13 inch MacBook Pro. Would the use of an egpu help at all and if yes one with 8gb RAM will compensate for the 16gb MacBook ?

One misconception about the new intel 8th generation quad core cpus is that it’s the same as traditional quad core cpus like found in the older MacBook Pros 15. The old ones ran at 45 watts tdp while the new ones run on lower tdp. Which means the new quad core cpus won’t sustain higher clock speeds as long as the 45 watts tdp could.

Hi all! I haven’t understood how you plug the 5K display? Inside the mcb or the black magic?

"Portable" With thermal throttling on cpu xD and not full performance on egpu because tb3 is still to slow ;).

I was going to buy 15" MBP because of the performance, but i like 13" more. Now, with eGPU i can buy 13", and i get portability and performance (at home). Gold

hydzior portable usually does mean thermal throttling there is no getaway from that but Apple’s nasty thermal paste does make it worse. tb3 only having PCIe x4 is still a pretty bad also but at least you get a dgpu that’s better than nothing.

Jacob Dawson well if you think 4 core is 2014 then I think you can blame Intel for sticking with 2 core cpu for ultrabook too long

Can the macbook pro 13" with touchbar power a lg 4k display without the eGPU?
@Fitz710
@Fitz710 6 жыл бұрын
Geekbench tests aren’t really optimal because they do not run over an extended period of time, thus not giving a clear picture of how the CPU will act when it’s been running at full load for a while.

Once again great video mate. I have a question regarding eGPU as my set is late 2013 15” MacBook Pro retina in top spec with LG 34UC97. In your opinion will I benefit while making videos in FCP X after buying this eGPU. Obviously I will have to use a connector TB2>TB3. What is your opinion on that please? Thanks mate

please check it with MacBook pro 2015 with script, PurgeWrangler to unblock TB1/2 Macs from using external GPU in 10.13.4.

Are there any Graphic Cards that have thunderbolt that are supported out there? If not, are any in the pipe line? I don't need an eGPU yet but in the next year I will.

Isn’t the Blackmagic egpu with Radeon Pro 580 (same as maxed out iMac 27” 2017). Is there a diff between RX580 (as mentioned in the video) and Pro 580(as on Apple website)?

You can't use the eGPU with FCPX 10.4 so you'll need to use DaVinci resolve or other video editing software (or a 15" if you want to use FCPX). Apple disabled eGPU rendering support in FXPX 10.4
@AppleInsider
@AppleInsider 6 жыл бұрын
You can. There's a script called set-eGPU, or a terminal command to activate it.
@d-zone
@d-zone 6 жыл бұрын
AppleInsider unfortunately the script only gives you 30-50% of the power compared to running natively with an egpu (as you can in 10.3.x). If you read the forums you’ll see the comments. Some pressure from popular KZfaq guys (like you) could get them to remedy that 😉

I wonder if Davinci Resolve, Premiere, or FCPX can take advantage of the gual gpu's. So if you get a maxed out 15inch and this egpu will we see these programs take advantage of both gpu's.
