Each Monday's we'll be looking at different colour management for different camera's
We're starting off with the original Black magic pocket cinema camera. A really great camera with some fantastic colour science.
Whatever camera you're using, cheap or expensive, it's important to have some solid colour management.

As of Resolve 18.6 I have found that only the 6500k daylight color science loads for the BMPCC OG / BMMCC, unless you are in ACES in the project color management OR with no color management your raw settings say Rec709/Rec709 in the raw tab - but Rec709 in the raw tab will clip highlights. Any other workflow and the color science will skew more inaccurate as you move away from 6500k white balance/light sources. At 5000k or higher this isn't noticeable but in tungsten lighting skintones will skew magenta, and all other colors will be wrong as well. This is easy to check by shooting a color chart and comparing the rec709 raw tab to any other transform. Older cameras typically have color science for 6500k and 2700k and interpolate between them for all other white balance settings, so when the 2700 doesn't load it just uses 6500k for everything. So for this camera, which I have shot a lot of footage for, you should use ACES or stick to daylight sources of light imo.

I am interested in how you know that your camera is using gen 5 and not gen 1. How did you come to gain this knowledge? I have a bmpcc6k and I have no idea what the input color space is, but worse than that I don't know how to get that information.

It all depends on when you've updated your camera. It should say all the info on the black magic page with the update notes. Saying that though, if you find gen 1 is a better starting place for your flow then you can choose that. If you don't know the colour space for a unknown footage. Then unfortunately it's a matter of going through colour spaces and finding one you think works best.
