Blackie, You are a piece of work my friend! This Sunday is my 62nd bday and I could not agree with you and Nessmuk more! When I was a teenage boy scout taking my Wilderness Survival merit badge "roughing it" was a laudible notion. Now? Not so much... I know I told you I just bought a brand new ILBE this week but that was basically so I could carry all the stuff that just wouldn't fit in my other packs. I live on a mountaintop in northern NJ a mile or so from upstate NYS. Would I rather park and huff it to wherever I choose to set up camp? Over hiking some ridiculous distance vs. parking and walking a reasonable distance. Your advice and knowledge are a constant source of inspiration to me. Thank you. Bill Doyle from Upr Grnwd Lk, NJ! Be well buddy!

I have that same canteen set. The newer version has two more vent holes on each end. With water an inch from the top of the cup & using a gel fuel it was 25 - 30 minutes to a rolling boil. Also use a small grill grate on top of the stove to help with air flow, that might kill some of the heat getting at the cup but for now that’s my setup. I normally use a alcohol stove, Trangia or several different DIY.

👍👍👍 .. good idea. The long burn time is definately a bonus. 'Sterno' has a reputation for 'burning cold' .. as it is designed to be. Something similarly packaged with a higher heat output and with an extended burn time is definitely the way to go. Here in Switzerland, the closest we have is the M71 Military Stove. It uses Gel with a reputed burn time of approximately 1 - 2 hours depending. Advantage is that it burns pretty hot and will bring water to a rolling boil. Refilling is simple (actually any suitable metal container will do as a Burner). 'Sicherheitbrennpaste', an Alcohol-based Gel Fuel, is widely available here in 850g / 30oz plastic squeeze bottles in Supermarkets .. Indoor Table-top Cheese and Meat Fondues being a Swiss National Sport 😁. Safe to use in more 'Fire Sensitive' areas and extremely clean burning .. a handy option to have in one's Tool Box. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

Hey, Blackie, this was a great video! I've seen that stuff at Walmart but never tried it. I'm gonna grab some on my next trip to town. I love that the outside stays cool so you can "bag it up" while you're sipping your coffee. The speed kinda nullifies the twig stoves for just making a hot drink.

I use chaffing fuel from Dollar Tree(Canada) in a DIY stove made from old coffee can. Can use the canned fuel, Trangia burner (& clones), or even twigs. Also have M40, M44, & trangia 27 clone [same as yours]. All are used with an insulating base to prevent heat loss /scorching of support surface. Long ago, I started camping with a sterno stove, candle lantern (5" candles) and 2 man nylon tent.

Most of these chafing heaters use ethylene glycol and di-ethylene glycol, which are related to alcohol. The stuff if pretty toxic and not for consumption, but the burn is pretty clean and very safe. It's safer than the alcohol gel cans. It won't burn without the wick, which is usually fiberglass. I've got some in my emergency and camping stove supplies and my testing showed them slow to get water to boil. For some odd reason, I hadn't thought of using 2 of them in a canteen stove setting, which brings it up to acceptable performance. Also really minimal setup. Great test. Thanks for the demo!

Question, if the liquid in the Sterno can is paraffin oil, could it be refilled with paraffin oil? Rather than lamp oil such as Tiki oil we use paraffin oil for our hurricane lanterns. Paraffin oil does not produce smoke, does not produce off-putting aroma as does lamp oil, and paraffin oil can safely be used indoors.

Hello Blackie- I have a few of those little flame stoves and they work well, plus you can get many uses out of them before they go dry. Im not sure if these ones are re-fillable, but one could put some used cooking oil in, pop a hole on the lid and run a wick, which Ive done and it works good too. Simplicity is more convenient for us Silver Wolves. Be safe out there Blackie- Carry On-

That is good information. I was surprised on how clean it burned. Itt seems to be a piece of equipment worth to look at. The boil time is not that much longer than with alcohol stoves. The "cool to the touch" property is an advantage. Around here it could be used when you cannot build a fire and with the liquid contained spills are unlikely. So there is minimal risk for starting a forrest fire.

Have the aluminium version of this canteen set with the idea that aluminium heats quicker and hotter than titanium in less than ideal weather (have a round titanium set for the summer). Haven't seen these sternos for sale here but they must be somewhere. If I'm just boiling water I use the old boot polish tin with the fire rope and alcohol. It's surprisingly effective, light in your pack and the price is right.

I think l've heard mention of that & l can only think all the fat in the butter would stoke the inner furnace. Of coarse the caffine would keep me up all nite but at least l'd be warm lol

It reminds me of a prefilled Trangia Burner... Which makes me think, Is it reusable and refillable or a one and dump? 🤔

I purchased a similar one from Dollar Tree that has "up to 2 hours burn time". After using all of the fuel in one, I trickled citronella scented tiki torch fuel into the top reservoir (that holds the fiberglass wick) and patiently waited for the fuel to drip, drop-by-drop, into the fuel chamber. It works, but the tiki torch fuel burns smokey and I would not want to use it indoors. Maybe 91% alcohol would be better for that.

@SleepyMann61 Yes, it's not a fast process (at least it wasn't for me). On mine (from the Dollar Tree store), there are two small vent holes in the indented reservoir near the wick. I trickled fuel into that reservoir and tipped the can ever so slightly to allow air to escape from the elevated vent while fuel slowly dripped in through the downhill vent. Took darned near an hour to get a couple of ounces in.

@@bretjohnson6188 Thank you for your reply. I guess I just don’t have the patience to do it myself. Good luck with your project!

I watched your video on boots 👢 and staying warm...and I was wondering if pantyhose would be nice to hold heat and a thin sock for boots 👢 under the heavier socks..my boots are leather and gore-tex 10 inch
