Something you'll learn about in K-Pop is that their videos tend to be full of symbols and meanings. Blackpink's "How You Like That" is a retelling of the classic Greek story of Persephone. Long story short, Hades, Lord of tbe Underworld, kidnapped Persephone, Goddess of Springtime, Flowers, and Vegetation. He lured her into a colorful bed of flowers and then erupted out of the ground with his chariot, dragging her down with him. Her mother Demeter, Goddess of Agriculture, found out what happened and went to Zeus, King of the Gods and also Lord of the Sky. Meanwhile, Persephone hated her new existence. She was growing angry and hated being kept down. A deal was struck that allowed Persephone to return to the world for about half of the year but she had to remain in the underground for the other half. So when Persephone returned to the world, she brought Spring and Summer. As she left, the world turned cold and decayed. This is the story all of them share, but silver-haired Rosé represents Persephone the most. In her scene at the beginning, she alternates between two locations. You see her happy with flowers and blooming with life juxtaposed with a dark, dirty cave. When she pulls on the mask, the first chorus comes through as the beat drops and they exclaim "How You Like That!?" The set is very green and full of plants. This is Spring. Summer is shown in the market with the lead rapper, Lisa. Fall with the purple background and umbrellas. And the Winter scene is obvious. Jisoo in the fire scene is the Goddess of Revenge, Nemesis, sitting on a spider-like throne. She's going through her list and throws the book when she's ready to deal punishment. At the end, the girls dance through a large hall and end up in a dome with 2 large Trojan horses. In the story where the Greeks hid in the horses, they erupted out of the horse secretly in the City of Troy and took over. These women use that to show that they have emerged and are here to takeover once again. And on the walls of the dome are an organic map. On the left is Asia and surrounding continents and on the right are the Americas, representing their global success. This can be interpretated as a message meant between 2 lovers or between them and haters. They are here and will not stop doing what they do. They can't be kept down! Thank you for reading! 🖤💖

*HOW YOU LIKE THAT* is about coming back from a dark place stronger than before. There are many Greek references in the video, two examples are: Rosé, with silver hair in the beginning, is portraying Persephone, Goddess of Vegetation (plants, flowers) and the daughter of Zeus. One day while she was out gathering flowers, Hades, God of the Underworld, abducted her and dragged her down to the Underworld where she was forced to become his wife. The video shows her in her beautiful image, surrounded by flowers, as well as how she became, dirty and grey, staring up at the world through a hole in the Underworld. She was eventually allowed to return to the surface for part of the year, which is why we have Spring and Summer. The Trojan Horses at the end are a message from BLACKPINK to the world. They symbolize the fact that BLACKPINK, like the Greeks, will emerge and take over the global music world. If you look at the last scene you will notice that on the inside of the dome it looks like there's an organic growth over parts of the ceiling. It's actually a map of the world that the group is going to dominate!

Kpop in general is amazing with cinematography in their music videos and production, basically their government funds them hence they go all out most of the times (but especially BLACKPINK’s company which is YG entertainment)!
