Correct. Poker beginners who show everyone their cards statistically tend to lose more than those that keep them hidden.

I played a home game recently where I took a big pot with a full house. The pot would have been even bigger but the fish folded on the river, then wanted me to show my cards. Got kinda pissy when I refused. I mean, ya it's a friendly game but I went on to win it and took home $160. That's enough money on the line for me to bring my A game.

I have made all of these mistakes (except perhaps No 1) at some stage, but I have learned that the best thing I can do is just change tables when I'm losing. I just admit to myself that I'm either too optimistic or too pessimistic and am reading the other players wrong on that day. There are plenty of other games for me to try - I never throw good money after bad if I'm sitting at the wrong table.

Excellent comments. Yes, I recognized plays I made early on. Over time, I learn, and I see more deeply in what is going on with any particular hand. I once told a young relative, who I actually introduced to a casino poker table, "You'r not going to make money at poker". Enjoy, with ups and downs, but don't expect too much. Nice presentation, no delays - 'get to it".

3:52 How about $50? 1/2 pot size. What would call a $75 bet (3/4 pot size) on that board?

Nathan, I’m probably not your target audience, but any guidance is appreciated, I know very little about poker have watched a few hours of wsop tours, I have a small idea of what’s happening but I’m not sure on positions, button, sb, ext ext, i understand that position matters, but not what is proper play per position, I downloaded your PDF, do you have a video on basic rules and etiquette or perhaps you can point one out, I figure you know, good info, as we know not everyone is an expert on KZfaq, from what I can tell you know what’s what..sorry for the long letter..thank you

I'm honestly so tired of having a good hand (Flush, Straight, or even Full House) and then I lose to some other guy at the table with the same exact hand BUT, he had a higher card than me. It happens way too much...

Back when I was single, in my 30s I played poker at the casinos for hours. I won consistently but it was VERY hard work and I only made something like $35 an hour. Day job is easier and way less stressful. The best advice I have is if there is a good player at the table, change tables. Don't get into a pissing match. Making money is the only think that matters.

On Tip #6 ( 2:32 ) wouldn't you want to bet so draws have the pot odds to call, since if the price is too high they'd reasonably fold if they knew they were getting bad odds? You have much more equity over them regardless so you'd want them to pay as much money as possible while you're ahead, no? unless there are like 3 other opponents in the table and you want to isolate. Is it just because new players don't know pot odds and call too much and good players would try and call to semi-bluff?

Think more long term. Like if you played the situation over 10000 hands. If you give a fair price to the draw you may be slightly ahead after so many hands but if you over charge the draws then after so many hands you should be way ahead
@michaelewald9195

Plus if they fold out more better for you cuz they can't hit the draw if they don't play

Do you really want to give strong draws that will have you crushed on a board like this a free card? Make them pay for the turn and river card or get out of the hand

Thats true when u play against the same people all the time, i am playing the WSOP right now. I show my cards most of the time, i am a tight player. Later in the tourney i start to chip up, i start bluffing more and betting marginal hands. Almost all of the time they fold, i cashed 3 straight events last year. I could only play 3 tourneys cause i love in another state, now i moved to Las Vegas. When i play against regulars they already know i am kinda of tight, so if i 3 or 4 bet they know i have huge hands. But i mix it up now,,,,it works for me....

Dude I’d give my left kidney to actually make 42 grand a year just playing poker 😂 young(er) millennial no kids back at grandmas house, I’ve worked full time for 10 years and have NEVER made 42 grand in a year. Economy is shit no job will give me raise and no company keeps anyone outspoken against the rich a promotion. So no I can’t just work my way up without selling my soul and risking my physical health to literally lose sleep and become obese in order to make money in this country. ILL GLADLY PLAY POKER FOR 40 GRAND A YEAR FULL STOP😂

even being a top earner at $72K a year is not a livable salary, for me to support my family and dependents to support. That is why poker will always be a side gig and only something to supplement my income at best. Having said that. these basic poker rules will help mots improve their game enough to start to turn a profit and reduce losses.

+10 Imagine trying to live in Las Vegas, with no benefits, $72K in annual earnings, AND the typical swings in earnings per week, per month, or per year. Got to have a hefty bankroll, and someone making $72K per year is not typically going to have one.
