Dang Son what a good idea! Somebody out there is always thinking! I'm just glad you share your ideas with us. Ya know with that deep curved end, they could be easily used for Railroad spike tongs. thanks again!

Nice, I reshaped one pair of these as my first tongs, quenched them and cracked them up pretty good. Will probably do some welding to convert them as suggested. Thanks.

I have always used hoof nippers for a hot cut. You just heat you metal, grab where you want cut with the nippers and hammer them closed

This was an awesome video. I saw someone use nippers to hold the head of the spike by forging. I like these options. Thanks for the video. Love your work.

Good job. I like the Fab tongs. A word to the wise. Folks have found out you can do something with nippers. What you one could get for a few dollars? Now they want your finished tong prices. That's not right.

The first set I ever tried to do, blew apart/broke. In hindsight, they were drop forged, which was a big problem. I should have annealed/normalised them before trying to forge them to shape. Thanks Tim!

Awesome the fabricated one that's a great idea
@douglasthompson27406 жыл бұрын
My first thought was those nippers could be reground so they have a single bevel to the outside making them perfect flush nail pullers. I do not believe anyone makes anything but short plier length versions in today's world and those with a double bevel which makes them useless. It would be great to have a set with good long handles for leverage. Not being in horse country I haven't run across said nippers. Happy New Year. Take care. Doug

Great job Tim....I think the second version is the way to go. Noticed all the right handed hammering....I take it the recovery is going well?
@BrianDaleNeeley6 жыл бұрын
The fabricated pair are great! If you had to buy the nippers new, the ultra-cheap ones would probably work *BETTER* in this application, because they would most likely be lower carbon. And I expect they would work on RR spikes too.

Could you not have normalized or annealed, the first set before reforming them? I like the idea on the second pair!
@getoverit48875 жыл бұрын
I have a pair like the second set I was trying to take the first route with them, but the way they are designed I couldn't get it to work... this was before I watched this video.
@he-mansuncle76616 жыл бұрын
Definitely the second set! Work smarter not longer!!! Would those work for the railroad spikes? With the horse clippers being $2, you could weld up an array of different sizes of tongs and then slowly pick up your long term tongs!! Amazing info once again!!! Did you get the package that I sent you bud? It says that it was delivered! Do whatever you wish with the wood I sent! I did find someone who has a lathe that has finished the rounded part where the locking mechanism is. Have you shipped it out? Or have the dimensions to the handles? Take Care Bud!
