It Might Get Loud is the title of a 2008 documentary by filmmaker Davis Guggenheim.One of the most dynamic gatherings in music history takes place in the new film IT MIGHT GET LOUD when legends Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White come together to play, compare notes and talk about music and their mutual love of the electric guitar. Directed by Davis Guggenheim and conceived by producer Thomas Tull, the film, through the words and music of three generations of musicians, celebrates the love affair these men and countless others have with the electric guitar, perhaps the most innovative and challenging instrument ever created.
IT MIGHT GET LOUD isnt like any other rockn roll documentary. Filmed through the eyes of three virtuosos from three different generations, audiences get up close and personal, discovering how a furniture upholsterer from Detroit, a studio musician and a painter from London and a seventeen-year-old Dublin schoolboy, each used the electric guitar to develop their unique sound and rise to the pantheon of superstar. Rare discussions are provoked as we travel with Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White to influential locations of their pasts. Born from the experience is intimate access to the creative genesis of each legend, such as Link Wrays Rumbles searing impression upon Jimmy Page, who surprises audiences with an impromptu air guitar performance. But thats only the beginning.
While each guitarist describes his own musical rebellion, a rockn roll summit is being arranged. Set on an empty soundstage, the musicians come together, crank up the amps and play. They also share their influences, swap stories, and teach each other songs. During the summit Pages double-neck guitar, The Edges array of effects pedals and Whites new mic, custom build into his guitar, go live. The musical journey is joined by visual grandeur too. We see the stone halls of Headley Grange where Stairway to Heaven was composed, visit a haunting Tennessee farmhouse where Jack White writes a song on-camera, and eavesdrop inside the dimly lit Dublin studio where The Edge lays down initial guitar tracks for U2s forthcoming single. The images, like the stories, will linger in the mind long after the reverb fades.
IT MIGHT GET LOUD might not affect how you play guitar, but it will change how you listen. The film is directed and produced by An Inconvenient Truths Davis Guggenheim, and produced by Thomas Tull, Lesley Chilcott and Peter Afterman.

They obviously chose these 3 guys because of their different perspectives of music and tgeir craft, if you don't enjoy one of them, there's no reason to go full on fanboy-mode and insult others. All 3 of them were born in different phases of rock history. While jimmy became famous during the the golden years of rock, jack had to struggle against everyone telling him rock is dead. It's pretty clear that different struggles create different artists - that's the beauty of it, isn't it?

The Edge is more than just a guitar, he's a magician. It really doesn't matter what instrument you're playing or how you use this instrument. If you can make beautiful sounds from simple chords and distorting the sounds by a pedal. Than that is brilliance. You can't deny The Edge has undeniable, memorable rock anthem sounds.

people bashing The Edge are ridiculous. is he a better player than Page? No. However, part of being a legend guitar player is actually creating your own sound and style. Nobody came showed The Edge how to create his style. There are many amazing guitarist all around the world but nobody knows who they are because they play others music. The edge created something so unique you know who it is. Page is the same but superior in his playing ability.

People's disrespect for The Edge is unbelievable. Page and other blues artists came before him so he is always compared to them, but The Edge is in a whole different realm. Like he said, he goes crazy trying to perfect his tone. To him, it is all about the emotion and feeling he can express which is what it should be about at the end of the day. And trust me, I've seen him shred some solo's. He has said himself though that he is not that kind of guitar player because he doesn't like that style of playing. It is not always how complicated something is, but what the end result is. If he was a player like Page, then no one would care because that has been done! U2 started in the 80's. Do you realize how boring it would have been to hear another Led Zeppelin? The Edge and U2 in general pushed the limits of their time period. Open your minds people. I hate this redundant argument that if it is harder to play than it is better.

Zack Ramsey Edge is a TRUE talent! So is Jimmy, so is Jack! I do NOT disrespect any talent (especially when it is light years beyond what I can do!). Each artist has their own merits in their own way! I enjoy each and every artist for what THEY bring to the world,....and based on these three dudes bank accounts,....a LOT of people also seem to enjoy them! This is why I am not a fan of "best" lists.....no one is better than another on any given day....it all depends on the listeners mood.....and bottom line, whether or not they are willing to support the artist! Some days I want to listen to Johnny Cash.....a true LEGEND in his own right,....other days,...Edge......it matters not! Neither is better than the other! They ALL make music for us to enjoy if we choose! And, in conclusion....I bought this DVD.....what a great idea!

The hate comes from him spending most of his time messing with effects instead of actually playing guitar. If you sit around all day messing with effects you'll eventually find something easy to play that sounds amazing...that's him. That's why he doesn't have our respect. He is a guitar player and he knows music, but he's just not in the same league. Jack White is literally his exact opposite.

A guitarist playing something excruciatingly hard doesn't make them a legend. If it did, the guys in Dragonforce would be the greatest guitarists ever. Jimmy Page IS a legend, no question. He's one of the best musicians ever to pick up the axe, but the Edge and Jack White are as well. The Edge employs effects better than nobody, and his sound is incredibly hard to replicate - almost impossible. And Jack White's infectious melodies and quirky slide playing complement his great soloing perfectly. It's the same argument that I make as for why I think Page is a better guitarist than Hendrix. It's not the incredible skill or the speed at which you play that makes you a legendary, it's how you play and when you decide to use that skill.

Jake, I agree 100% man. I feel that knowing when to play what and when to remain silent, or reserved was the unspoken, never noticed rule of Zepp that made them what they are. I'm a Zepp head, have been since I was about 11 or 12. from the first 2 seconds of the first song I ever heard of them( Kashmir ) I knew I had discovered my favorite band, which was crazy because I never even thought of having a favorite band prior to that moment. Zeppelin is the greatest band that has ever graced our ears, and I can stand my ground with that argument for so many different reasons. Nobody will ever come close to them. R.i.p. John, your talent is what caused me to pick up sticks on so long ago, I only wish I could have had the chance to meet you..

a true musician understands the art of music as something complex. it's not only about breath taking solos, but mostly about supporting the whole band with your instrument. these 3 guys have brought their new and unique sound to their bands and to the modern music itself, so they are definitely not overrated. they are true artists, regardless of technical skills or whatever some of you guys arghument with. they have their own sound which you can recognize right away, they became trade marks.

In my opinion the combination of the edge, page and white is a very good and logical one, I mean look how complementary they are: Page is like the classic guitar virtuoso, with blistering solos and cool techniques, White would be the DIY guy, getting crazy sounds out of otherwise crappy instruments. The Edge finally is like the technology guy, getting beautiful tones by clever use of delay and echo effects. I think we should look at the movie that way:)

As a massive U2 fan I say, yes, Edge isn't in the same league as Jimmy Page. Page is in fact on a different planet. U2 however, after 40 years, are still selling out stadiums by writing and producing and playing their own rock music. That puts them as a band some place different from those who came before them.

Here's my opinion on why they chose the three guitarists they did. everyone thinks that they shouldn't have chosen The Edge , but it rounds of the the trio perfectly i think. Jimmy is a Classic rock legend known for his timeless riffs. The Edge is the master of effects and gets very creative with each song. Jack is the simplistic type, using raunchy, blistering, blues inspired chords and stuff. i think they chose the perfect three for this Doc.

Thomas Tull(Director of the film) was on Lex Friedman podcast last year. He was talking about the filming of the documentary. One part of it that I absolutely loved is what he said happened after they were done what they needed to have to complete the documentary. He said once they were finished, Jimmy Page, Jack White, and Edge asked the production team if it would be ok if they hung around for a bit so they can keep playing. Of course the team said yes. And then they ended up adding that into the film when they didn’t expect it to happen. He said it was just like three teenagers hanging out talking about something they love mutually. That’s just such a cool image to me that it doesn’t matter whether you’re the most prolific songwriter in the history of the world or someone in your basement who just bought your first acoustic. That boyish passion still is in there.

The mark of real artists. Respecting each other's manifestation, no matter how simple or technical. They all admire their creations. They all belong to different time periods of music. All represent their era in some way. 70s Hard Rock Jimmy Page that oozes hedonism and excess. The 80's Post Punk of The Edge that went on that same pattern of creating soundscapes with effects. Then the whimsical 00's garage rock revival of Jack White that I still don't understand, yet it still creates an experience. He's an icon of that age

Stairway,Dazed & Confused and Whole Lotta Love were knowingly ripped off from other artists.That's a fact. Kashmir was written by John Paul Jones. What exactly has Jimi Page done beyond that? At least the Edge can rightfully take credit for his greatest songs...
@felipemarinho8359
@felipemarinho8359 10 жыл бұрын
Jonesy didn't compose the whole Kashmir arrangement alone, in fact the song main riff was John Bonham's idea, Jimmy had some parts in a citar tuning, everybody helped a little, Kashmir is such an amazing song. Jack White used lots of blues material, especially now on his solo career, in fact lots of blues guitarists did and still do that. Jimmy Page did not write the lyrics for Whole Lotta Love but as a guitarist he did what he needed to do, not the lyrics, not the bassline, not the beat, but the main guitar riff and solo, which were completely new.

This is fantastic. It doesn't matter what your tastes are: 3 generations of music, each caused a musical shift in one way or another. Believe it or not, this is a PERFECT group. Anyway, as a guitarist and bassist I'm impartial as to who is in it. As a gear nerd I'm seriously interested in guitarists' rigs, no matter who they are. And not to mention, learning their techniques as they share them. You WILL NOT improve as a musician with a closed mind.

No he's not a shredder, but a very smart guitar player. Much like Phil Collins on drums he knows how to write world class riffs that are memorable.
