This is our walkthrough of the Palisades Center mall in West Nyack, NY from January 22, 2019. This is quite old footage of a property we could very easily forget. Built against the will of the community it was placed in, a mall no one wanted was designed with a look no one wanted either. Built in the same sort of industrial design you would expect from a warehouse store, this mall leaves you feeling cold, walking around a lifeless box of stores with nothing else aesthetically pleasing.
Songs used in this video (in order):
Carte Blanche - Offshore
Casiopea - Space Locomotion
Fuse One - Sunwalk
Carte Blanche - Streamline
Casiopea - Some When Some Where
Soichi Noriki - Cozy's Melody
Steve Gray - Wonder Groove
Steve Gray - Reach Out
This is actually a very thorough and well cited Wikipedia article. Please do consider reading the rest as there is a lot of history after the 2000s involving this mall:
en.wikipedia.o...
Also, if you can find a copy, there is an excellent documentary retelling the history of the planning and building of this mall. It goes into great detail with plenty of historical footage about how the Pyramid Companies built a mall the community didn't want, despite months of loud protests, and indifference about the community from Pyramid.
-------------------------------
I'd like to say a few words about being an ambassador to your local malls. We have been taking the time to visit all the malls within a reasonable driving distance to check up on them and see how they are doing. Also filming an updated video every year or so, regardless of the lack of many changes, just so there is a video record of the health over time. We think this is an important thing to keep tabs on, especially in these wildly turbulent times. The current health emergency has accelerated the impending Retail Apocalypse we've all been talking about these last several years. This was already a big problem, but the shutdowns and restrictions have made the issue 5x worse and likely hastened the death of the enclosed shopping mall.
I know we've all been on pins and needles wondering how bad the fallout is going to be from all of this.
There really is no way to know exactly unless we ALL go and do our small part to make it known how it turns out. I implore you, if you have the means to pick an area you would like to be an ambassador for, and go document your local malls. Whatever your medium, it doesn't matter, any and all documentation is necessary and vital in this day and age. Whether it be on Social Media, Flickr, KZfaq, any platform gets it out there and preserves it for posterity. We can't paint this picture unless we all grab a brush...

Wow a mall I can get lost in. Something for everybody in here. Amazing mall.

I probably have the unpopular opinion here, but I actually kinda dig the whole industrial look of the place! I can see why people don't like it but I personally do like it, and it's still far more interesting than the bleached look Simon malls have. I might be biased, since I do actually dig industrial places (one of my favourite places is Dolní Vitkovice, a former industrial area turned post-soviet industrial themepark). It reminds me a bit of my local mall, but with far more character Some of the faux-street lamps in the food court are a great touch, and the whole food court area is very pleasing, in my opinion

Even with all that, Palisades still seemed too big to fail. But with everything that’s transpired in 2020, it’s future no longer looks assured.

This a very nice mall. While a tad on the bland size the various pillars and hanging lighting in combination with the skylights really makes for a bright and airy space. The contrast in color really helps define the space. Interestingly management has invested heavenly in this property fresh. Nice to see. This is certainly a very large mall. It has to be well over a million square footage. I notice there is a JC Penney. It is tenuous that this anchor will make it through bankruptcy. I would say there is a fifty, fifty chance of survival. Mayybe Boscov’s will eventually take the space, however that could take a year or two to sort out. So this mall looks like it’s very successful. Something to be admired.

The JC Penney closed a while back leaving Macy's as the only department store anchor; luckily for the mall they have all of the other big box stores there.

They renovated this mall back in 2013, making it very bland and boring. It used to have a lot of neon and colored fluorescent lights, I thought it looked really cool. I used to come here all the time back in the late 90s/00s. Definitely a very different looking mall, also it’s over 2 million sq ft!

This mall is huge. Like a town within a town. I'm not crazy about the design either. Looks like a pirate ship met a construction site ☺but it's unique. I need to visit there one day . Thanks 4 video 😊👍

I must say I kind of like this mall. Yes it might not be the most interesting to look at but it seems very spacious and big. Not to mention it does have a lot of stores that I’ve personally never seen in the mall ( ihop and staples to name a few). I will say I don’t like the warehousey type of look to this mall. Love your videos! Please keep them coming!!😉

It's interesting how, since the mall is four floors, the anchor spaces are different stores stacked on top of each other (one is, from the bottom up, BJ's/ Best Buy, Home Depot, Burlington, & Target).

The mall just needs some colour, a fountain, chrome and neon/led, but I like the planter/seaters and lamps, certainly a 70’s throwback

22:08 That's a sad, dark space for a management office, tucked away in an obscure corner. Must be super noisy being where the food court is, too. Nice mall though....definitely enormous.

There’s a lottery booth/news stand right Next to that sad looking management office that I play my numbers and lotto at. They also got snacks and sodas and energy drinks. Not to mention they opened a 7 eleven all the way downstairs by Best Buy.
