BLACKWATER! APISTOGRAMMA, ALTUM angels, GULPER CATS and SATANOPERCA in the Rio Atabapo

(pike cichlid), Pterophyllum altum (altum angel) , Heros libirifer (mouthbrooding severum) and Asterophysus batrachus (gulper catfish) in the Rio Atabapo! This is a real blackwater habitat, with very acidic pH 4.5-5.0 and not measurable hardness, fine white silica sand substrate and large boulders.
This video was filmed in the 1990s, so it is just 720p....

Never get tired of watching these videos. I especially liked the behaviour of the apistos, reminded me of cichlid behaviour I observed when I lived near L. Tanganyika. Species like J. regani, Simochromis babaulti and Altolamprologus calvus lived in and around crevices formed by vast slabs of accreted substrate, which had broken up to create a desertscape. The shell dwellers lived in depressions formed by currents, where dead snail shells accumulated in large numbers. It's easy to see why these apistos are rare in the trade, collecting them takes a lot of time. Shame really, providing tank decor for a sand dwelling dwarf cichlid wouldn't be challenging.

That habitat is also very far from any place that consolidates fish for export, and these type of blackwater habitats are not very diverse. Usually these Apistos come "alongside" _Uaru fernandezyepezi_ from the middle Rio Atabapo.

Great footage -- if in stagnant water with leaf litter in the Rio Negro basin look out for Tarumania walkerae - monotypic family only described in 2017, full range unknown.

It was a bit harsh with the white balance problem I think it was. Still,the real habitat of wild fish...and I bet in the 90's it was more pure than in 2020. Hard to imagine Brazilians voting in a neanderthal President who wants to slash and burn his way for short term prosperity. Once the Amazon is gone,its never coming back.

Hi I need some advice on my gulper catfish I got a 7 inch gulper yesterday but they didn't tell me it had cataracts in his eyes, he's fine and healthy but do u think he's actually blind or not and do u think he'll b able to eat live coz of this pls help I Need advice on this catfish pls help me ,I Need to know if hell b able to hunt live ,pls let me know, thank u,from Aaron, uk 🇬🇧 pls tell me if u going.this will hinder his hunting skills as I know they don't rely on eyesight for hunting

he will be fine, they don't really see well, nor rely on their eyes much.

These roots come from the balsa wood trees you see in the opening sequence, they look a lot like Northern Hemisphere willow (Salix spp.) or alder (Alnus spp.) roots, those can also grow in water. There is little top soil along these rivers and just silica sand underneath, so there are not many high trees.

unsubscribe, then resubscribe. We had one video that was set for kids if you subscribed before then, it won't allow you to hit the bell. That should fix the issue.
