I don't care, because I'm poor. On an unrelated note, as an autist and dope fiend, I approve of this video and of law and order. On an even more serious note, (a) thanks for reminding me that I need to go back to this game and that it's somehow still the most impressive facial tech (need to stop at that before I get miffed at the state of the industry), and (b) never delete YTP, cos it's a piece of internet history, a history of crap but history nonetheless.

Cole Phelps is still one of my favorite protagonists in a video game. He's very flawed, but likeable in certain capacities (not to mention his excellent voice acting and mo cap). Shame we never got a follow-up or spiritual sequel. The closest thing I've played to this gameplay rhythm since then was the Sign of the Times dlc for Mafia 3.

The reason the Homicide Desk seems as weird as it is, is because its based off the Black Dahlia if I remember correctly. The Black Dahlia was a woman murdered in LA in 1947 and was famously a massive blunder for the LAPD that was never actually solved. Today a lot of people theorize it was the work of a serial killer which is what LA Noire went with. In the game the killer turned out to be the brother of a politician or something, which is why it was covered up and all the people you locked up would be quietly released.

This game has a well-deserved spot as one of my favourite games ever made. There's just nothing quite like LA Noire, it's almost like an entire genre on its own. And the characters, the world, the music, and the story of each individual case work so well together. Although I always enjoyed this game, I've definitely developed a deeper appreciation for it now in my adulthood compared to my teenage years when I first played it.
@WK-47
@WK-47 11 ай бұрын
I hear you. I never forgot about it but also regrettably never finished it. I was also a bit too young (early twenties so still underdeveloped) when I first played it, but especially with the way the industry and medium has progressed since then (it hasn't in any real or positive way), I only appreciate quality products and standout oddball works more now. You're damn right it's unique and almost in its own genre. I'm aware of Sherlock adventure games with detectives as well as detective work, but nothing that's in the vein of Rockstar and yet isn't Rockstar. Oh, and just like with New Vegas, the devs worked with what they had to turn out something amazing only to seemingly be screwed over hard by the bigger company. Real champs and a real shame.

I had no idea this game was so violent. Also, I have noticed a trend of people reviewing decade plus old games and giving them lots of love. Which means two things: 1. The olds hits hold up. New players still love them despite how long ago the games were release. 2. The new modern games are so bad that people are going back in time to subdue their cravings for good, fun games.

One problem I have with the game is a case that you tackle in the Homicide desk. ******Spoiler (obviously)***** It's the Golden Butterfly case. Long story short, a murdered woman ends up with two suspects- a husband who has a ton of evidence against him, and an 'overly friendly babysitter' that circumstantially fits the profile- but appears slightly more legitimate. If you could verify the blood on the husband's shoes as being nonhuman, it would probably make both men 50/50- but still. Your partner suggests at first to charge the "free hugs" suspect to protect the children- giving the husband a free pass for now, but your partner changes his mind and says the husband was the more likely culprit after you interview both men. HOWEVER- if you cuff the husband, that dildo of a captain of yours flips his shit and says you shamed the department- threatening to fire you if you fuck up again. PARDON ME for not wanting who i think actually did it to get a temporary pass for just enough time to book it to Tijuana.

So, I actually really love that part of the game and find it totally realistic. Here's a little essay I've written for you: A family member of mine was a detective, and he had a very similar experience. He was working a murder case, and the person they were looking to charge had a ton of very damming evidence against him. His bosses wanted to charge a group of suspects who really had nothing on them. The optics of shutting down an imagined human trafficking ring responsible for a murder would've looked a lot sexier than just bringing in a lone suspect. My family member persisted with trying to prove his case for that charge, so he was removed from the investigation and had any hopes of career advancement pretty much destroyed for doing so. His bosses continued pursuing this group, had them charged and tried with the flimsy evidence they'd come up with, and it was thrown out of court. 18 years later, the suspect my family member had tried to charge is now on trial for a whole slew of crimes, including that murder. Many of them were committed long after the murder my family member was investigating. It's too little too late for my family member, though. He retired on quite a shitty salary, and his mental health and relationships with the family are in tatters because of it. That little section of the game really kind of hit home for me. The way that you're put into a position where you have to adhere to your Captain's feelings about that suspect - which are totally understandable in that instance, don't get me wrong - or risk disciplinary action really shines a light on how politics, beliefs, emotions or egos all still come into play in law enforcement institutions. It can be as cutthroat and bullshit as any other business, these people aren't usually rewarded for doing their job if it conflicts with the interests of their superiors. However, during the first cutscene of the next case they actually reference the previous one. No matter who you charged with that murder, the Captain acts as if you charged the suspect that he didn't want you to charge. I think an ironic remark is made about him being happy with the result, and he leans over the table they're sitting at and furiously says "Over the moon, boys!" or something to that effect. That bugged me, because there clearly should've been a version of this cutscene where he was genuinely happy about the outcome of the previous case if the player had charged the guy that he wanted you to. Also, the stupid Black Dahlia case at the end really just kind of ruins this whole thing in order to make a very similar observation about police work in a more grandiose, yet dumber way. I wasn't a big fan of that, but I suppose perhaps the devs might've thought most people wouldn't have picked up on the more subtle version of it that we're talking about. I should point out though, considering how bad the conditions at Team Bondi were during the game's development, I'm not surprised to see these kinds of missteps. It's probably a miracle that we even got the game that we did.

@DerKurator I appreciate the kind words. So this isn't in the US, and a lot of this won't be public until the end of the year/early next year. Depending on the outcome and how I end up feeling about sharing specifics, I may throw a link somewhere here when it's all over. That comment took a lot of editing and rethinking just because it's all being dragged up again at the present moment after years. Honestly, I just wanted to speak about it because a part of the game I thought was really interesting was being criticised. Hell, when I first played the game, I thought it was stupid too. I didn't know anything about the things I've shared here when I first played the game. It's only looking back to that level after learning about and dealing with the fallout of what happened that I've started to appreciate it. Funny thing is, maybe I've totally missed the mark regarding what the developers were trying to portray in that level, I could be totally projecting for all I know.

L.A. Noire's a masterpiece: incredibly high production value combined with masterful storytelling and writing - it tells a serious, sincere, and mature story without falling into tedium, rigidity, or relying on seediness to keep the player's interest. I doubt we'll ever see another game like it. I absolutely _want_ a San Francisco Noire set maybe 20 years after L.A. Noire starring Jack Kelso as a private investigator... I just don't think it could be made today. Everything, for some reason, has to be soaking in irony or weaving (or shoehorning) anachronistic present-day activism throughout the narrative... something L.A. Noire completely avoids. It just tells a damn story... and a good one at that... and that's not something people seem capable of doing anymore, for some reason.

I played the absolute hell out of this game back on Xbox 360, then got it again for free with my preorder of Max Payne 3. That's right, it's so old, it was back when I still thought preordering games was a good idea. LA Noire sits along Death Stranding for me in the category of "Games all my friends shat on for being too slow paced and movie like but aged like the finest wine in the cellar to me for some reason despite me also hating movie-esque games." because I mean, like Death Stranding, there's still nothing quite like it out there, so it sucks for the people like me who do want to see more of this kind of game.

I tried completing this game several times. I start it, fully invested, being very cautious, finding clues, etc. And then I just stop and play something else. Some times passes and I am like 'well, I haven't finishied it the last time, how about I start from the scratch, but do it properly this time from start to finish'. Then the same thing happes. And I actually like the game, but what's up with that

I loved this game despite how I was so bad at it I never got introduced to major parts of the story like how your vice partner and the CoP are corrupt or Valdez, I also don't remember your traffic or arson partner like at all, it's only Rusty the loveable fatty or the corrupt one.
