Blade irons vs Cavity back irons is very important and most golfers should definitely play cavity back irons as much as possible from the beginning of their journey to single figure handicap.
There is no shame in playing cavity back irons and playing blades will not suddnely make you a better player. You can play blades when you can hit the sweet spot of almost any golf club.
Blade vs cavity back irons distance - The Blades can go as far as the cavity back with similar loft and shaft length. Usually though, the number stamped o the bottom is irrelevant as the manufacturers have delofted the modern cavity back irons up to 7-8 degrees lower than traditional lofts on the same number iron in blades.
Muscle back irons is another name for blades.
Forged irons vs blades - forged irons can be both cavity back and blade. Majority o the cavity back will be cast. Forged is just the manufacturing process, forging the irons from a single piece of metal instead of a cast where the alloy sets, for cavity backs.
When to switch from cavity backs to blades? When you can hit the sweet spot of the cavity back irons regularly - 8 out of 10 times. Usualy also happens around the time of being a 4, 5 , 6 handicap.

I started with cavity backs, moved to blades for the same reason. The better I got the more I couldn't control the distances with cavity backs. Also, for me, I really struggle with anything that has a thick sole, but I am not much of a digger more of a picker. Excellent explanation on the differences!

I really love the feel of the older/heftier blade irons from the 70's and 80's. They really forced me to learn to swing the club, rather than hit with the club. As an old duffer, I am also grateful for a coach that educated me in the Sam Snead/Patty Berg swing methods.

Going from cavity backs to forged mid handicap irons has changed my game tremendously. I’m not playing blades they’re t200s, but they’re not super forgiving either. It taught me to work on my swing and learn how to hit a ball and it’s made me better from doing that. You know when you hit a bad shot more often when ur clubs aren’t forgiving. And you’re able to adjust because of that.

I went from blades to 0311 gen 3s. The difference is amazing. I feel like my distance control has gotten so much better. The difference between a flush and a slight mishit is so much closer. After a year, i have no issues flighting them down or working them when i need to (typically recover shots, I'll work the shorter clubs into pins). With modern technology the only advantage to a blade is feel. Put the ego aside.

While these days it's mainly a semantic difference, all of the modern clubs that we call "blades" are really muscle back irons. Back in the day, a blade was an iron with no added mass behind the ball and a cavity back was the first more forgiving alternative to a blade. If you ever get a chance to hit an actual old school "blade" 'iron anything that misses the dime sized sweet spot will sting your hands for days!
@philips4169

Agree. my first set were Tommy Armour 845's said (by many) to be up there with some of the best clubs ever designed. A good beginner and up to mid handicapper club. And yes, if you miss-hit them they too hurt just like a pure blade did/do. I get Matt's experience as a very low handicapper how with the feel, and a more centred consistent ball strike he prefers and plays blades. The comment by Matt about difficulty/inability in creating fading or drawing by deliberate design with cavity clubs as compared to being able to do that more easily/better with a bladed club was not my experience either. I have played with pure blade sets, and do carry pure bladed clubs (2 and 3 irons) in my bag now so I know from playing them how they feel in comparison to hollow backed clubs. I was, back in the Armour days, quite able to draw and fade very well (scrambled a lot back then lol so I had to haha☺) with my cavity backed Armours with no trouble whatsoever. This I put down to Normans teaching which I practised and practised and practised as closely as I could until it became second nature. As an aside for newer golfers wanting to learn how to set up their basics of swing and shots having no knowledge of these I learnt a huge amount about the fundamentals of stance, ball position, strike, shaping shots, from Greg Normans VHS tapes, and modelled my swing, set-up and play on his and as such could pull shots around corners left n right hit super high shots over trees, punch shots 10 yds off the ground for hundreds of yards on windy days with my cavity/peripherally weighted Armours. I've just bought Ping i525's after a few progressions over the years since my Armour clubs ("muscle backed irons" as you describe) and love em to bits. First set of well/carefully fitted Pings by the way (although I have played with Pings before). Still got loads of forgiveness, lower projected ball flight, great soft feel. Did look seriously at Srixon ZX5's and 921 Mizuno's the new gen. semi-cavity/muscle backed but for the look, feel, forgiveness, and additional distance the Pings give we, well, they are simply delicious.

Sponsors and modern mentality! Cavity backs have great distance, but modern muscle backs aren’t that difficult to use. I own sets of Titleist 712 MBs and AP3’s with the same shafts. It will take me a couple of holes when switching to the MBs but I quickly am reminded to slow down and strike that ball. My blade 6 iron is my 7 iron cavity back in reality; cavity backs are made with stronger lofts to give players the illusion they are longer! I will admit when facing the a par 3 over the lake and hitting a 5 iron blade can bring horrible swing thoughts! Then again those thoughts invade me too when using a cavity back! So I’ll use a hybrid in that case! Striking a blade well is the best feeling!

Everything before had led me to this moment in time, a time that would be spoken about for generations I could see the eyes of the other golfers eagerly twitching and straining to get a look of what would be my crowning achievement. I could not deny them any longer! I slowly removed the protective head covers I had bought to keep my prized possessions in perfect condition. The sun hit their highly polished chrome surface reflecting a blinding light the likes have only seen when the baby Jesus first smiled The only sound that broke the silence was an audible gasp from the crowd that had gathered. I held my Mizuno MP18 blade 3 iron aloft, my Excalibur! As I took to the first tee and placed my ball the crowd had grown and members had come out onto the balcony to witness my ascension to a higher plane. It’s here, it’s now Time went into slow motion as my backswing reached a crescendo. Laser focused I started my weight transfer savouring every moment, feeling the lag and power build from the X factor Clean shanked it 50 degrees to the right, straight across the practice green, over the bush and nearly killing an ex mens captain on the 10th fairway

I'm sorry but much of what you're saying is just not correct. You're repeating conventional wisdoms that are not accurate. You need to do real testing with a launch monitor so you can see what these clubs actually do. I play blades and I have never had my hands stung with even the worst of mishits. There are many tests of these kinds of clubs and blades are more consistent in every way than cavity backs or even game improvement irons even with mis hits. You could easily argue that blades are MORE forgiving than game improvement irons. There is also very little difference in peak height between clubs with the same lofts. Of course a 34 degree blade is shorter than a 28 degree game improvement 7 iron but if you match the lofts there is little if any difference in height or distance. There is also little or no difference in workability between these clubs.

If you fail to hit the ball well, all the forgiveness in the world won’t help your swing. Blade irons improve your ball striking. Cavity backs lack feedback for bad or great shots; it’s like having dead hands. The notion that you need to be a 7 index to play blades is ridiculous! Everyone has their preferences. A bad strike with a cavity back can easily send you a hundred yards into a hazard. There’s no ball movement! Being stuck in a tree line from a bad driver shot (from a forgiving driver!) and using a blade can help with a low fade shot around real trees! Why doesn’t anyone talk about this? Modern blades are fantastic!

See everyone in here saying oh my game is so much better with blades everyone needs to move to them. That’s just not true lol. Cavity backs are just better clubs. People who have blades just wanna look cool then slice the ball every other hit cause most people can’t hit blades at all. My cousin who almost went pro told me that blades are the biggest waste and only uses cavity backs. Mind you he is a +2 handicap which yes means in tournament play he adds two strokes to his total.

Everyone is different…play your large cavity back then! Who cares unless you have actually owned a set of modern blades then ignorance is bliss. Perhaps the 2 indexer needs the psychological assistance having a cavity back for extra confidence! Tiger Woods little boy hits blades and it’s for a reason! They will make him a better player!

More pga players play cavity back than blades so Ive never understood why people act like they are really doing something with blades.

He says it helps you get under the ball and lift it. But that’s not the goal of the swing.

please do not display low IQ here - no one said anything about the goal of the swing. the club assists in getting the ball AIRBORNE due to the way it was designed.
