Ridley Scott commented in an interview that the night before shooting Roy's death scene his actor, Rutger Hauer, came to him with the "tears in the rain" monologue he had written himself. Ridley was so impressed he changed the script to include it.
@dcanmore
@dcanmore Ай бұрын
that's the myth, but not the actual story, but he did modify the script to what was said on screen. Originally the monologue was written 70 words long and Hauer thought it was too clunky to deliver smoothly. So he asked for it to be cut down a bit, it came back at 48 words but he wasn't pleased so Hauer took out another 12 words and added in nine words of his own and that is what you see on the screen. However Scott didn't know about the final modification by Hauer when they shot the scene and kept it in as he thought it was perfect

Replicants are biological entities just artificially created instead of born. Basically their slaves calling them robots covers this fact. Just as calling it retirement covers the fact that they're killing them. In my opinion a slave has a right to revolt against its slave holders. People never get this about the movie, maybe it's the replicans that are in the right and the blade runners and authorities trying to enslave and kill them that are in the wrong.

On the 5-disc special edition DVD extras Ridley Scott says filming the final rooftop scene was a nightmare. It took forever to get the dove to fly out of Rutger's hand. It would just flop around on his leg or jump off and walk in circles. After dozens of retakes the dove finally did it. Ridley was always unhappy with how odd and out of place the few seconds of the dove flying away looked. He edited it with a new CGI background for the final cut. There are videos of the two versions shown together.

Fun fact: Ridley Scott was unhappy about the ending the studio insisted on so he was reluctant to shoot the overhead panning shots. He thought of the beginning of The Shining for the look when it occurred to him that there was certain to be left-over footage from those scenes, likely in boxes somewhere, because he knew that Kubrick was so obsessive about getting the right look but was also terrified of flying making it a certainty that there were hours of rejected footage potentially accessible unless it was discarded. It wasn't discarded, and Ridley had a lot of options to choose from.

Oops, wrong version. The Final cut is better. At test screenings people didn't seem to get it, so the company decided to do the voice over and add a happy ending. Ridley Scott made the Final cut in 2007 exactly as he wanted it to be. What makes this film special to me is the visuals combined with the music. Never has dystopia looked and sounded so beautiful. The sequel is a continuation of the story 30 years later. It's a good story, but unfortunately we don't get to see this gritty lived in world again.

It's an interesting twist. Roy Batty, almost a sterotypical ultraviolent supervillain, and brutal as he is, turns out to be a freedom fighter antihero of sorts, fighting for a just cause in a world of human monsters. And man did Rutger Hauer play that part well. Overall, I do prefer the newer movie, but to my mind, Roy is without a doubt the best character. And the nail through the hand thing was because his body was starting to shut down and he was fighting to stave off the inevitable, if only for a few more minutes.

The book this is based on, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, is really quite different. I'm a fan of the author, Philip K. Dick, but it is difficult not to compare the book with the film. It is because of this that I would not recommend reading the book, but maybe try reading some of his other works. A number of his stories have been adapted, with varying degrees of success and faithfulness. The best ones are probably Total Recall, Minority Report (good film, but I can't forgive it for abandoning the premise), and The Man in the High Castle (amazon show). Personally, I have a lot of love for Screamers although I wouldn't exactly call it 'good'

In the original book, and only hinted at in the dialog in the movie is that there's been some sort of environmental cataclysm that's resulted in a lot of animals dying off. As a result, most natural animals are highly prized and even illegal to harm or kill. Hence all the questions about animals and helping or harming them. It's supposed to be putting them at odds with what they know is right and wrong. In the original book it even goes so far as everyone feels a moral and social obligation to care for a real animal if they can. I'd say the most important difference to know between this cut and the final director's cut when going on to watch the sequel is that it ends when the elevator door closes. There's no final monologue about Rachel having no limit to her life span, leaving it an unanswered question, and no footage of a lush forest as that doesn't fit with Scott's original intent for what the world outside of the city is supposed to be like. Also, during the final director's cut Deckard has a dream about a unicorn when he's dozing off in his apartment, giving the fact that Gaff leaves a unicorn in Deckard's apartment an extra bit of meaning to read into.

I'm glad you watched the theatrical version to start with as I think the narration helps first time viewers to get their bearings. I'd hoped you'd have some visceral reaction to the plight of the replicants. Imagine you go to work one day and your boss tells you you're not human, just a replicant with someone else's memories. Rachael's world was destroyed that way, "I am the business," she said to Deckard. As for the other ones they're basically 4 year olds in adult bodies, sent out into space to do slave work. Not much of a life, no childhood, no teen years just born adult. That why Roy and Priss seem so wild, it's why they like toys and playing games. If you do watch "Blade Runner 2049" be sure to watch the 3 short films that precede it, they give valuable background information.

Harrison Ford was contractually obligated to do the narration, added by the studio against Ridley Scott's wishes. His flat delivery was an expression of his disagreement with the studio's decision. Perhaps inadvertently it matched so well with the character of Deckard that it did not detract from the film as much as it might have. With that said, the final cut of this film is the best of them and is Scott's vision fully realized.

Hey, Ylva! If you walk through a jam-packed Times Square on a rainy night with all the electric lights, neon and jumbotrons blazing, it feels exactly like the Zhora chase scene! As a New Yorker, I've done it multiple times and it never ceases to amaze me! This is a masterpiece by Ridley Scott. It is an existential drama decked out as a noir police procedural set in a dystopic megalopolis. There is an excellent book about the making of this film called "Future Noir". The production design influenced every science fiction urban landscape that followed and took its baseline cue from Fritz Lang's silent 1927 sci-fi classic "Metropolis". The screenplay is an adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novella "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?". PKD's stories have been adapted into several Hollywood films including "Total Recall", "Minority Report", "Paycheck" and "A Scanner Darkly" as well as the Prime series "The Man in the High Castle". Dick dealt with themes of memory, identity, humanism and consciousness. Rutger Hauer, who recently passed, cited his role as Roy Batty as his favorite part and a career highlight. He cradled the dove on a whim and released it when Batty passes symbolizing his soul being set free. Ridley loved the improv and used that take. The "tears in rain" monologue was one he wrote himself and it has become an iconic touchstone of science fiction. The Replicants are the sympathetic figures despite the primary functions they were meant to perform being hazardous labor, sexual service, combat and assassination. The humans come off as callous and soulless. In the end, Tyrell's genius and artistry renders the distinction moot because, aside from the built-in expiration date, the Replicants are indistinguishable from humans. What makes them potentially dangerous are their genetic enhancements like increased strength, durability, agility and stamina which put us at a disadvantage should they go rogue. The great debate is whether Deckard is a Replicant being monitored by Edward James Olmos' Gaff. Is the unicorn dream an implanted memory known to Gaff explaining the latter's unicorn origami calling card at the end? Has he let a human colleague violate his duty and let it pass as a professional courtesy or is he revealing to Deckard his true nature and announcing the commencement of a hunt? Did Tyrell encode Rachael with an expiration date like the rest or did his special experiment include an open-ended lifespan? The ending is left open to interpretation and has been debated hotly for nearly 40 years! Ridley has teased and fans have speculated that the "Blade Runner" universe and "Alien" universe are the same. Besides the films having the same director, one telling clue is that the computer software in the flying cars in "Blade Runner" is identical to some of the software in the cockpit of the space freighter in "Alien". Roy drives the nail through his palm because the flesh is necrotizing and stiffening with rigor mortis. Skewering his hand with the rusty nail forces the dying appendage to feel sensation to keep it alive a little longer! There are four versions of this film. Scott prefers The Final Cut. Some fans enjoy the original theatrical cut which featured a voiceover narration by Harrison Ford as if he were a world-weary 1940's gumshoe thinking aloud for the audience to hear. Absolutely see the sequel by Denis Villeneuve set 30 years later! It's called "Blade Runner 2049". It's a very worthy follow-up that itself demands a further sequel! Harrison Ford returns as Deckard in a cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Mackenzie Davis and Jared Leto. By the way, you may know Edward James Olmos, who played Gaff, as Admiral William Adama from the rebooted "Battlestar Galactica" series, as Lt. Castillo from "Miami Vice" and as Jaime Escalante from "Stand and Deliver". Other Rutger Hauer performances worthy of viewing are "Ladyhawke", "The Hitcher", "Blind Fury", "Flesh + Blood", "Sin City", "Fatherland", "Night Hawks" and "The Soldier of Orange".

Exactly. They're to busy trying to be clever to even pay attention. Replicants are based on the human genome. Tyrell did some genetic modification, obviously for strength and general physical performance. But they must still eat, although we don't see that in the film. And much fantastical imaginings aside, Deckart is not a replicant. He is in fact there to be suspected of being one in order to encourage viewers to think about what being human really is. That's a central question, because replicant's, like other humans, are created through a biological process. Closely managed, it's true, but they are not machines.

@@mrgclough He most certainly is a replicant. In the director’s cut and the Final Cut they’re just less vague about it. Unicorn dream/origami. It is a story about slavery, prejudice, and racism. No better way to get you to realize those things are bad, and how you shouldn’t treat “them” differently, than to make you think about “What if you’re actually one of them?” Deckard nodding after seeing the origami, and remembering what Gaff said to him, is him acknowledging that he now realizes he is a replicant since Gaff knows about his dream. And you do see replicants eating. You see Deckard eating, and drinking, more than once. And you see Pris eating. They’re organic beings, so naturally they need to eat.

@@mrgclough In one interview, Ford is very clear that Deckard is NOT a replicant, whilst in another, Scott is very clear that he IS. To my mind, the story arcs of Deckard, Rachael and Roy only makes sense if Deckard is human. It shows how a human, a self-aware non-human, and a non-self-aware non-human each deal with their developing emotions and their empathy towards the others. Compare and contrast ... My own theory is that Scott intentionally stoked the debate with some of the 'added scenes' and the removal of the narrative exposition. The ongoing debate has only added to the film's cult following.

The Final Cut is the true Ridley Scott version the sequel set 30 years later which was directed by Denis Villeneuve.

The original version i saw in 1982, see, Deckard has photos, he feels for Replicants, feeling bad killing replicants.....eh ! signs of him being a replicant ! that's the state we were back in the eigthies about this ! much later new versions from Ridley were even more direct.

The so called «original release version». The only thing I like about it is the «I want more like, fu**er», later changed for the more bland «I want more life, father». But the voice over telling us what we are already seeing is a drag...

This is in my top 10 of all time. But honestly, try one of the other versions (non-voice-over versions), like the Final Cut, because they are at least technically better (fixed continuity and sound sync issues), if not stylistically. The sequel is pretty golden as well...

1. Joe Turkel/Tyrell played Lloyd (bartender) in "The Shining". 2. Roy/Rutger Hauer😇 plays in Blind Fury a great first time/share. 3. Leon/ Brion James in Tango and Cash. Much bigger role first time/share also. 4. Deckard/Harrison Ford two overlooked must first time/share "Witness" and "Force 10 from Naverone". 5. In the original Roy tells Tyrell, "I want more life FUCKER" not father. 6. Ford disliked almost everything about this movie (including Sean Young). He mostly disliked the voiceover. He refused to even watch it until it was "fixed". 7. I prefer this original cut. 8. Daryl Hannah cut her elbow when she ran into that van window 9. Philipe K Dick first came up with the idea for his novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" 10. You must watch Blade Runner 2049.

The Final Cut is the definitive version. The voiceover is generally felt to have impacted it very negatively. Also, the replicants are living organisms that have been genetically engineered. They have more in common with the original robots from Rossum’s Universal Robots than the machines we call robots today.

I like your reaction. Most reactors either don't understand or appreciate artistic movies, you must have a background in literature or theater. I never picked up on the tongue and you howling with Rutger Howard was delightful. Btw I prefer the version where they took out Harrison Fords voice overs. Even though I understand the purpose is the film noir style, I like things less explained and a less happy ending, cut with them leaving the apartment without them driving in the country.

Some prefer the theatrical version, some prefer the director's cut. Like all opinions, it's subjective. I prefer this version. The genre-appropriate noir narration provides context omitted from the Directors cut. For example, you never find out Rachel has no specific expiration.

The non narrated version is so much better to watch.. it lets the viewer watch the story and experience Harrison's performance through his face and posture. The scene where deckard shoots the replicant and its just the music playing while she goes through the windows makes her death way more tragic...

Blade Runner is a landmark in sci-fi. The version without voice-over is better because it leaves more to the imagination. Highly recommend the sequel Blade Runner 2049. It's great. Really captures the feel while standing on its own. Respect to my countryman Rutger Hauer. One of our most succesful actors.

This is the original cut I grew up with. Even have it on Criterion laser disc. It doesn't have the strong teal im the Final Cut which I'm not a fan of. The narration also gave the movie a file noir vibe like an old detective movie missing from the Final Cut. This is still my go to version to watch no matter how much the modern film snobs and Final Cut stans hated this version of the movie. Thanks for the reaction. The International Cut has a lot more violence than the U.S theatrical cut while the Final Cut has the extra unicorn scene to establish Deckard is a replicant(which Ford and argued with Scott that Deckard should be human) but took out the happy ending.

Oh wow!~ This has the Voice Over track?!!! This is the original, theatrical release. When you get a chance, watch the final cut. Much better than the theatrical and leaves the movie with a question. Yes, watch Bladerunner 2049. Produced by Ridley Scott, written by the writers of Bladerunner and directed by Denis Villeneuve. Oh, and cinematography by Roger Deakens, who won the Acadamy Award for cinematography. A very very worthy sequel. Thinking about it..., if you enjoyed this film, watch the Final Cut before you see 2049.

Wow! Theatrical version reaction! I liked it for the world building and giving it that film noir feel. This was considered a bomb at the time but it developed a cult following. People have probably already told you about the different versions of the film but I liked this version as much as the final cut that doesn't have the narration and ending monologue. Great reaction.

Good evening/morning Ylva I share with you a couple of comments that I usually post in the reactions to this movie, because, in my opinion, many people tend to misunderstand or misjudge the true intentions of Deckard's (Harrison Ford) character when he's with Rachel (Sean Young) in his apartment. I think you are one of the few people on KZfaq who, when commenting on that scene, has mentioned the fact that Rachel, as a replicant, did not know how to "proceed" in that situation (even though she was attracted to Deckard or desired him). My English is not very good, so I leave you these comments written by other users in other channels, where, in my opinion, they explain Deckard's true intention in that scene: >. -Porfle Popnecker.

You watched the much-maligned voice-over version. It's been long rumored that Harrison was so in opposition to it that he read it horribly on purpose. That's why it sounds so flat and wooden. If you watch BR again you have to watch The Final Cut. There's no narration and it's Scott's preferred cut with some fixes and enhancements.

I like how there's (basically) 3 main versions theatrical, directors cut, and final cut. My fav is directors cut cuz its like final cut but no cgi advances its all old school still. I started with directors cut. Yes, watch bade runner 2049 too please. Its sick af too. But you oughtta watch final cut on youre own time at some point or directors cut. They are still better than Theatrical cut. But whats cool about theatrical is the narration like old nior films. This is a noir movie but sci fi too. They call it low tech high life too. Cuz their is so much tech but the poor still live in the grime while the rich live lavish lifes. No amount of tech really fixes it

Hey Ylva, it'been awhile! I like BLADE RUNNER because it makes u think. I watched it for the 1st time in it's entirety for my Cognitive Psychology class in college back in the early1990s. In regards to this movie, we discussed consciousness, & if man were to create something like the Replicants in the movie what differentiates us from them, especially since they can develop feelings & they have their own thoughts/consciousness. Lets just say it was an interesting conversation that turned into a debate.😄 - Yes, the movie purposely had a Film Noir aesthetic even though it was in a Futuristic setting. - Rutger Hauer has always played unhinged or diabolical well.😊 - I can't remember whether or not u watched DUNE (1984). Sean Young played Chani. - I think u should watch BLADE RUNNER: 2049. It's actually a good movie & an interesting sequel to the original. - Well, guess that's it. Really enjoyed this reaction.😊👍
