I was extremely hesitant from this film when it was announced. Bladerunner was my favorite film growing up. When it was released on blu ray I bought it, got a sick pack of beer, and gave it a shot. It still to this day brings me to tears how amazing it is. This film is something special. 2049 became my favorite film. Denis is a master of his talent and there was so much love that was brought into this film. I am extremely thankful this film was considered and put into the right hands

"Put into the right hands." Precisely. Can you imagine If Ridley Scott had just handed this off blind, because he was busy with _Alien: Covenant_ and Columbia let someone like J.J. Abrams butt in and direct, like he did with Star Trek, doing press, going "I was never a big fan of Blade Runner, but hey folks, I got this . . ." K's implanted memory of the horse scene at the orphanage, as a child, running around to freakin' Cypress Hill "Insane in the Brain" or some shit. Nightmare. (You might can guess, I'm not a fan of Abrams.) Villeneuve has emerged as a true, great visionary talent as a director. I'm also thankful he was trusted with the job.

Denis Villeneuve had a remarkable sense for this film, it felt something like Ridley Scott but also distinctly of Denis. I appreciated this film as the successor to Blade Runner, in some part, because Denis did not stay too much in mimicry of Ridley Scott, but did not stray too far away and alienate the audience who watch it because of the original film. Most important, Denis stayed to the classic Science Fiction concerns of taking 'future shock' issues and portraying them in the story of the characters instead of making them a glossy excuse for big action or on the opposite extreme, of philosophical navel-gazing. I love that you pondered this film instead of, as some reactors, entertaining with simple emoji-like performance for the camera.

The entire point of the loss of Joi being a sad moment in the film is that they are both considered less than human, not real, fake, artificial, so when his Joi dies, who is to say it should be less of a loss than the loss of a "real" person? The whole film centres around this concept, the ghost in the machine, the soul in the golem, it's not "just a freaking computer" when she's stomped out of existence.

But then he comes across the giant pink Joi advertisement, and the advertisement calls him Joe too.
@OfficialJanitor
@OfficialJanitor Ай бұрын
@haaxeu6501 The idea of a.i. is that it learns. So even though she is a program, it is self learning. She is creating memories or data that would work like memory. Creating a life and feelings surrounding the life as a result of projected feelings from the human. The version of the a.i. he had on that device was unique and did have unique feelings about the life of the protagonist. I think the scene of K hearing her call him joe again solidified in his heart, there was no getting Joi back. To create her again, he would have to tarnish what once was. A deeply tragic concept.

I agree that this is a beautiful film, and I don't just mean in a visual sense. I saw this in the cinema. There were probably only about five other people in the audience! Admittedly I don't like crowds, and avoid busy times for watching films, but unfortunately my experience was reflected in the film's box office performance. However, for what seemed an unnecessary sequel I think they did an amazing job, especially in writing something that works for more than one interpretation of the original film... and of course the original also has more than one official version. Neither the original film nor this one will appeal to everyone, but when I watched this in the cinema it kind of felt like Villeneuve had made the film for *me* which was a special feeling. I think he understands the strengths of the original better than Scott, to be honest.

Ridley Scott is a great director, but the dude was completely clueless when it came to the actual deeper meaning of Blade Runner. Deckard being a replicant just makes no sense on so many levels and Scott was practically the only one who thought he should be.

I'm glad you enjoyed it and that the film had an impact on you as it did for me. I saw it in the theater, and this film left me sitting in my seat for a while after it was over. The rest of the evening I just kept thinking about life - meaning, purpose, love, the difficult and complex nature of reality, etc. I love this film and consider it the greatest sci-fi next to Terminator 2 and Aliens. I ended up writing a summation after having seen it a second time: "There was no real decoy. It was purely on paper. K/Joe is utterly, completely, unequivocally unremarkable. Thus his name - Joe, as in an Average Joe. Joi does not possess a soul. She is completely fake. She is the other side of the Replicant coin and is made solely to please and coddle her owner/lover. The giant pink Joi on the bridge calls K Joe as well, and her entire branding scheme is that she'll be anything you want. K wanted to feel special, so she always reinforced this to him, but it was never real. Joi is K's fleeting dream of being special, and Luv took her away way from him by destroying her emanator. Then upon meeting Freysa, he comes to learn that he is not special. Not born but manufactured. Wallace posed a question about whether Deckard was moved by love or programming. To me there's no doubt whatsoever Deckard is fully human. The original movie is about a bad man finding his humanity through the grace of a machine. Wallace's question is not a literal "Are you human or machine?" question, but pondering what the difference is; if love is just neurochemistry, and if we are products of biological programming or something higher, like a soul. The ultimate takeaway is that it does not matter. In fact the only thing that matters is what we choose to do with our lives. In summary, 2049 is about dreams and delusions. K wants desperately to be special. Joi tells him this constantly, and he quickly assumes all the evidence points to him because it's his dream. He becomes deluded and forces himself into the situation even as it destroys him. He thinks this is what it means to be human... to grapple with one's humanity. He is torn between two sides telling him what his identity is and should be - the LAPD who informs his identity as that of a slave, and the resistance which informs his identity as that of a free Replicant. When his delusion is shattered by meeting the pink Joi on the bridge, he chooses to follow his own path and not let anyone tell him who he is or what he should do. He makes the most human decision of all and takes his life into his own hands. He saves Deckard for the same reason Roy did in the first Blade Runner. He wanted someone to remember him, for his final decision that fully validates him as human to not be in vain. No one else gave him his identity, only he did, and his sacrifice ensured forever that he was by every metric a human being, even if the world would ultimately forget him."

Thanks a lot for your reaction to one of the true great masterpieces of Sci-Fi of the past decades. Basically, each shot of this film is a work of art that could be hung on a wall like a painting. Just like the original Blade Runner, this one puts me in a very emotional mood, in which all my pains (physical and psychological) are gone, but where I'm getting strangely nostalgic for a dystopian world than I never lived in.

Zimmer's a fucking jerk. Came on with one of his many protégés, from his massive country-club/buy-in/pyramid scheme of a production house, and fired him, forbidding him to even mention it in the press. I know composers who've laboured under Hans' leathery wings for more than 2 decades, just to draw a steady paycheck in LA, and only have enough credited work to count on one hand. Pathetic.

Your feelings toward K/Joe were exactly why the story has K mislead to believe he is of woman born, it makes the viewer change the way they feel for him as K, the replicant who bought his "computer" girlfriend, who incidentally names him Joe, and you then want it to be true (his being 'real") and allow your feelings to change about him but then later realizing he isn't of natural birth, a little something in everyone struggles with their feelings having changed or why those feelings change again. Some say they definitely felt a change, some say they don't, but if they think about it long enough, they know their feelings did change, regardless if they were willing to admit it or not, to themselves or to others. You cared about the dog like you would a "real" dog, but it was aritificial, a 'computer" dog... a very expensive to buy dog, yet nevertheless, still a 'fake' dog.

Thank you. I have watched dozens of reactions to this film and yours was just perfect. I see you don't post often. Please consider getting back into it. The disturbing truth is that we are already in a world where people buy artificial people who say what they are programmed to say. The hologram technology isn't quite there to have one walking around the living room, but it is not far away, and there are so many very lonely people who would be grateful for such an app. I don't understand all the new technology. There was a three year gap when I was homeless when I went from being able to build a computer to not understanding a thing, and I have never caught up. Now I don't even like to have my phone switched on. I have subscribed to your channel and will watch any reviews you have done of films I know and love, and if you'd like a list.... It could have been a great movie. But it fell apart in the last 30 minutes. And given how long the wait was, the soggy and inconclusive climax relegates this one to a "watch once and be done with it" fate. Also wasn't helped by Harrison Ford's perpetually wooden acting.
