Not our usual fare, because you can in no way look at this and say it is a castle, but it is none the less very interesting from a historical viewpoint. Especially if you have an interest in Industrial history, specifically the innovation that allowed the production of cheaper, better quality steel.
The "basic steel process" or the "Gilchrist-Thomas process", named for the industrial chemist Sidney Gilchrist Thomas and his cousin Percy Gilchrist (who was a chemist at the Blaenavon Ironworks) came about when Sidney discovered a solution to the problem of phosphorus in iron, which resulted in the production of low-grade steel.
By using dolomite, or sometimes limestone, as a lining for the Bessemer converter rather than the usual clay they were able to remove the phosphorus and produce a better quality of steel at a fraction of the price. It also produced a byproduct of phosphate fertilizer.

My Grandmother was born here in 1878 and the family worked here. I'd love to go there. The row house where grew up in is still there. It's on my list of places I'd love to visit, but at 77 it's not likely. Thanks so much for this video.

As a child, my grandmother lived behind the stack on the hill.

That was terrific. And thanks from the daughter and niece of workers in the iron foundry (North Yorkshire) for not romanticizing the life of a worker amid these feats of engineering. Perceptive.

I’m not sure how it could be romanticised, it sounded like it was a hard life for entire families. As clean and serene as it is now it’s hard to picture it, but I’m glad we were able to do the place justice.

@@MostlyCastles See BBC docs on my hometown Middlesbrough. The drama of the blast furnace the raw power of the steel etc. etc. Never a word about the emery dust killing workers, the physical danger, exhaustion, just a white collar management view of the world. You did a much better job in just a few minutes.

Lol, you are perfectly within your rights to ride your hobby horse where you like 😁 And yeah, I suppose I can see it would be very easy to get carried away with all the power elements and forget the people if you just look at the buildings and what they produce. It can blinker you to everything else. We were very impressed with the way Cadw look after the place in a way that put the emphasised on the people and honours those that lived and worked there. The metal sculptures were a very touching tribute especially.

Thanks very much. It is. We really enjoyed ourselves at this one. The weather might have helped but it was fascinating and the people who ran it were nice and chatty.

It was a fascinating place to amble around. We spent most of the day there filming and having a look in all the rooms and ended up chatting with the lovely lady on reception until closing time, so we missed the big pit as well as the Pwll Du Tunnel. Did you mean Garnddyrys Forge?
