It was kind of hard to rank these because I believe all these episodes and specials are important. And please don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying one issue is more important than another. I just want to compile a list of episodes that bravely and unapologetically tackled serious issues that I'm sure some of us may have went through or have experienced. I really hope some of them have helped you, or if there's a different show/episode that did, let me know in the comments down below. Thank you for 500K !! :) Much love, and more content to come. I mean most of these episodes happened before the year 2007. after 2007, kid shows became more polished. I don't really blame the creators or the executive producers of networks, I actually blame the parents who think content expressing these situations are too sensitive for children. I mean in good luck Charlie, one episode just hinted that there was a lesbian couple and what happened? homophobic adults sent a child (who was younger than 5y/o) death threats.

At the same time though, as much as it is important to know about these topics, notice how none of the episodes in this video were... "entertaining?" They're important and have great symbolism behind them and all, but not something you'd watch on a daily basis. You're saying that, "In order for a show to be good, it must have a moral", which I highly disagree with.
@spindash64
@spindash64 7 жыл бұрын
1Laika maybe so, but these older shows were willing to do this, because they felt it mattered. It emphasized that this was a world that was real, that sometimes things don't end up happy for everyone. The big issue here that I have with a lot of more modern shows is that, they don't want anything to really matter. If things are important, characters have to change, meaning that the story moves forward and the show can't go on forever. Tv has slid into a merchandising slump recently, and it feels like they don't want to make it about characters anymore. There are still good shows, and to be fair, part of the reason this doesn't happen much these days is because no one wants to make an anvilicious episode, be that one nosy guy. But sometimes, the anvil needs to be dropped, they need to learn about this.
@SuperDannyrivera
@SuperDannyrivera 7 жыл бұрын
I agree with what everyone is saying on this comment. The reason I feel shows now don't tackle serious issues is because it's controversial and polarizing. We live in a society where so much is being debated. Like the show "13 reasons why" recieved a lot of hate of their depiction of suicided and there was much argument on whether or not the show gave a positive message on the situation. If their going to do a episode involving serious issues, then they have to do it right or it could backfire on them. TV people don't want that kind or controversy, especially when it comes to children TV. Which is why they think it's a good idea to exclude these serious issues from their shows. But I do think it would be interesting to see more children shows tackling these issues.

It's good that TV shows deal with serious subjects that should be dealt with, and not avoided like the plague. Kids need to know these problems and how to deal with them before they also encounter such issues, so they are prepared for their future and feel secure.

The thing is, a lot of children in the world DO deal with serious problems. Death, abuse, depression, bullying, drugs, etc are things children often experience too. So it's good when a cartoon touches on these subjects and gives positive advice, and should be something seen more often imo.

And they also need them explained differently depending on their age and stage of brain development. A ten year old is capable of understanding things better than a four year old and will react differently than one too. Episodes like this should be made in shows for all ages. Of course, not to extreme measures. You don't want to cause anxiety. Usually though all that's needed is a happy ending and some reassurance that everything will be alright.

Honestly, we NEED this in today’s cartoons for kids. Being an adult is tough, but being a kid is also tough in its own way. You have little to no control over your own life, you’re also hit with hormones that make you think and act weird. You experience your first taste of love and heart break. Maybe family problems at home or school. Kids are like blank canvases, they can easily be dyed any color. But certain events or messages in their life can help and change who they are. I remember certain episodes of several shows that really made me think and feel a certain way. I started to understand deep emotions and how those shows taught me to deal with it in a positive way. The early 90’s and early 2000’s was the golden era of cartoons. Some cartoons newer out there like Adventure time, Steven universe are great but nowadays most shows are all about bright colors and acting “wild” for literally the most random reason with no plot just GO,GO,GO to the next gag. It’s not about being creative, it’s about what sells and how fast corporations can put out a cartoon to try and boost ratings. Very sad, but I believe there’s still hope ❤️

Melanie Draws my elementary recess monitor got breast cancer (her husband had cancer too) a few years ago but beat cancer. I personally know how hard it was to lose a relative to cancer. I lost my paternal grandmother to pancreatic cancer in 2007 when I was four and my maternal grandfather died after a nine month battle of lung cancer in 2012 when I was ten . My paternal grandfather died before I was born and my maternal grandmother is still alive to this day. Anyway, I think Arthur and Charlie Brown were great at showing us how cancer affects relationships. I love how they do it.

I'm pretty angry that children's programming talks down to viewers and rarely, if at all, do real issues like back in the day. I dealt with vicious sibling rivalry from my older half sister, my cold mom and an alcoholic dad. Neither teacher nor television told me what to expect. Now, although my dad is recovering, my mom is opening up and my sister has her hands full with her problems, I really wish for very special episodes or at least, the topics interwoven into the storylines.

When they describe Mr. Hoopers death, it was like the future episode when Elmo wanted to play baseball but he couldn’t because (I don’t remember there name) died, Elmo didn’t understand. I’d say Sesame Street actually is teaching a lot of kids different things, like divorce, death, austim, foster kids, incarcerated, and etc. I think it’s really nice what they’re doing :)

Arthur was THE show that dealt with serious issues for children. I watched that show a lot as a little kid, and looking back, a lot of episodes tackle hard-to-understand subjects in an easy undertandable way, but NEVER talks down to children like they were dumb. Arthur treated their child based audience maturely, like they can handle it (and clearly they COULD handle it, seeing how the show still lives on).

When I was a kid, my friend had a brain tumour, but the teacher never told us. I was in kindergarten and like my classmates, didn't know. For some reason, she liked hanging out with me more than the two other girls. At first, I found it annoying. I was a tomboy, I wanted to hang out with the guys, though I still liked dolls and was a troublemaker, and I was mean to her. I got scolded by my teacher, but I never knew why. It wasn't until my mom finally told me that she has "an owie in her head," and I understood and played with her a lot from then on. It wasn't until grade 1 rolled around, and near the end of that year, she died. I remember sitting in the church as the priest spoke, turning my head left and right, to the only finding people crying. I started to cry, but I didn't know why. All I did know, is that I'd never see my friend again. I don't regret my time with her and I'm glad my mother told me before it was too late. She also helped me get through my first bullying. I'm glad shows talk about this type of thing because it does happen.

Jennifer Papillo When I was around 6 or 7 and went to a Catholic convent school ( yes, taught by nuns, I carry the baggage to this day and I’m 42) we had a girl in the class below me who suddenly just didn’t come to school any more. She would occasionally come in to see everyone, probably around once a month or so for around a year I think. We were told absolutely nothing about why she wasn’t in school any more, or why she had lots of bald patches which turned to complete baldness and some of the nuns were such hard-faced bitches that I knew not to ask for fear of being walloped again with the handle of the classroom broom. As a school we all went to church together one morning, which wasn’t at all unusual for us but this time there was, what I as a young child was beginning to recognise, a white coffin at the altar. I knew these boxes were for the deceased, and that a small white one signified a small child. I wasn’t alone in feeling totally confused. I’m sure it can’t have been too long in to the mass that I realised what was actually going on here. The funeral finished, we went back to school and I don’t recall it ever being discussed again. I don’t think school could’ve handled it any more confusingly for us. That single experience as a 6/7 year old (I might’ve even been 5 actually) influenced the way I would approach the subject of death with my old children years later. There are ways of exploring the subject with young children rather than just ignoring it and thinking they won’t even notice! Your comment had me welling up bringing it all back and seeing that little girl’s funeral for what it was and through a Mum’s eyes xx

There's this one new show called let's go Luna, a show that focuses on the diversity of the world, and one of the episodes dealt with the loss of a loved one. The name of the episode is blue Orleans. I watched it, and felt like it should be part of those kids shows that dealt with serious issues, but it confronted it with a strangely lighthearted tone, with song, as well. This is a very new show that came out in 2019 or 2018, and one of the first cartoons that dealt with serious issues that is very new.
