Dear Sewing Friends, in this video I am upcycling BLANKETS! One of the great things about blankets is that you get a lot of fabric, so it is a little bit easier to upcycle and a great place where to start. From linen throws, to quilted blankets and of course knit blankets - you can use it all for some great ideas. See below:

Love these upcycles! I personally adore deep rich colors like your purple blanket, so I am really partial to the jacket you made from it. I also love the color combo in your first cardigan. I wouldn't have thought of gray, yellow and white to go together but they do, beautifully.

I would not call the burgundy jacket under welming, I think it wonderful! I usually wear sweater or light jacket to bed to keep my arms and shoulders warm while I read in bed , your jacket would be perfect. A thought to attach the belt, sew to the back so it won't twist, and so it won't come off and beome a cat toy. I can't tell you how glad I am to be a member of your channel.❤

I recently used a couple older fleece blankets that we didn't need and made pajamas. The way I did the tops I can also wear them as a sweater for extra coziness. Because they are blankets they are a bit thicker than regular fleece.

You’re amazing!!! The “Ikea” hoodie you made looked awesome! Even when you wore it inside out, I think the tape made a very effective feature, and it could easily be worn like that for a very casual look. If you have any leftover after making something out of it for your daughter, I think a really easy pencil or straight skirt would look really smart. That burgundy colour suits you so much!!! And I love how that cardigan came out! ❤

Having two sets of clothes just makes sense especially when you have children. I was raised a similar way, we came home from school and changed into our play clothes. We also had our Sunday best. When I lived in Latin America, I had house clothes and more formal clothes that I wore when I went downtown. Now that I live in California, I don't do that as much because I live in much more casual city. However, I wear an apron all the time in the house. I also have a "paint shirt" for painting and other messy things and I like layers a lot. I'm thinking about making a paint smock to wear that's looser and longer.

I learn SO MUCH from your videos! THANK YOU! Some questions for you: 1) Do we need to pre-wash a bulky knit before sewing with it? And pre-wash the interfacing as well? 2) If the seams get too bulky to fit under a sewing machine needle, especially when sewing the Twill tape, what should we do? Thank you SO MUCH for sharing all your skills with us! 💖👍
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity 6 ай бұрын
Hello there, all great questions, let's see, prewashing: I usually prewash everything I work with, not only because natural fibers tend to shrink, but also because most fabric from stores has some sort of preserving chemical on them, and also those bolts of fabrics have been all over the place, so might as well wash them before working with them. In this case I did not prewash because the content was acrylic yarn (from what I remember, I might be wrong but It wasn't a natural fiber) and I was just too excited. But it is hitting the laundry before I actually wear it out. Interfacing - you don't prewash interfacing. About fitting a bulky project under your presser foot - it can be a challenge... In some cases, like working with denim, you can actually pound the seam allowance with a malot, but in this case - sometimes sewing machines come with adjustable presser foot, and if not - just do it by hand. I know it might sound daunting, but it actually goes much quicker than it seems, + you will have full control over it, therefore less wasting time on taking out stitches and doing it over and over. Some of the parts of twill tape on this sweater were done entirely by hand. I hope this helps! :) Happy sewing :)

The IKEA blanket upcycle looks lovely on you! I love upcycling blankets for sewing. I am currently making a long coat out of blanket I was given from a friend who moved . And just recently I used an IKEA blanket I thrifted as the backing for a cashmere blanket I made from thrifted cashmere sweaters that have little holes or shrunk in the wash. I am really enjoying the blanket and am almost finished the coat. Good thing as its -26 degrees Fahrenheit in my area of Canada right now.

I love the shawl collar cardigan. That's actually very elegant looking. Are you sure that's velvet? It looks like the Pure Plush line of fleece at Joanne's. Also could be called velour or velveteen. It is soft on both sides. A little shaggy on one side and short fibers on the other. And it does change color depending on the direction of the light hitting it. It has a stretch to it. I use it to make long sleeve peplum sweaters. I love them because they are so soft and warm.

I’m afraid I have to disagree with you; I don’t find the burgundy sweater underwhelming at all! I think the fabric, with its texture and color, looked very pretty. I am a person who does not think “outside the box”! Thank you for doing this for me! Thrift store fleece blankets for a shacket (for some reason, I so dislike that word!j, or for a light weight spring jacket, will be so inexpensive. Thank you for sharing your creativity. It helps a lot! BTW: I was wondering if one needs a particular scissor sharpener? After, literally decades of sewing, I have never used one. I always use a knife sharpener from the back of an old electric can opener!

Awww, thank you! I just felt that usually in my upcycles I try to hit two points - something interesting in the design or construction and something that I will actually wear, and for some reason I fel that in the burgundy cardigan there wasn't anything interesting... I do like it and I have been wearing it ever since the video, we have had low temps here and snow. Maybe I am just being hard on myself... Thank you for being kind and I am so happy this video have you plenty inspiration :) I have a few other jacket videos on the channel made that might give you even more ideas.

Another way to prevent raveling of knitted fabrics is to run a long baste stitch along the edge of the seam allowance of your pattern pieces, then cut just outside the stitch, and remove the stitch later. There is a technique in knitting known as "steeking" which is to knit a sweater in the round, as if it's a pullover, then run two parallel lines of stitching down the front, cut between them, and insert your zipper to make it into a cardigan. That yellow striped sweater is awesome!
