Bleeding Zoom hydraulic brakes on a Aventon Ebike

A customer brought in a Aventon Ebike with both brakes not working. In this video we bleed the brakes without all the proper fittings for the job. The Zoom brakes use oddball fittings on some of there brakes. Even if you get a universal brake bleed kit it probably won't come with everything you need as I found out. I hope this helps you.

I recently had this issue with my rear brake on my Aventon Aventure. The brake lever was nearly touching the grip and I had almost no stopping power. The local bike shop that I took my bike to mentioned that the rear brake will need to be bled and I agreed. Hopping onto Amazon, I found a universal bleed kit that included mineral oil that was compatible with the Zoom hydraulic brakes. I ordered it and it arrived a few days later. I just performed the bleeding procedure on my bike and I was happy to find out how very easy it was to do. I also noted that the existing oil in the brake hasn't darkened, so I'm in the clear with that and I won't need to change the oil in the line. I'm glad I learned how to do this with my own kit as doing this myself will save me money in the future when this needs to be done again.

Good information and thorough video, but why remove the wheel? That just seems unnecessary. Couldn't you have removed the caliper instead? Seems maybe even that may not be necessary. I have this bike and purchased it from a local dealer that specializes in Aventon bikes. They performed a complete brake purge/bleed and did not remove the wheel or caliper, as I watched. A few months later now, and the rear brake is spongy again. Somehow air must be getting in the system? I have inspected all areas and detect no sign of leakage. Your thoughts, please?

That's cool bike. Hydraulic brakes are always the best I just got and Epic e-bike but it has mechanical disc brakes they feel kind of cheesy. But it's fun to ride and it's fast 48 volt battery and it swappable so if you want to buy an extra battery you can always be ready to ride. I like it because it's got big thick rims with fat tires although I might change the tires out for more speed because they are more for dirt riding. Thanks for the video as always and the lesson.

Thanks for your comment. Sorry, I missed your comment. I actually like both types of brakes. The hydraulic performs best until you have an issue. When that happens it can get expensive. The cable actuated ones you have to tinker with more often but you can fix it on the side of the trail most of the time. You can make your brake feel less cheesy with a different lever or possibly a different caliper. Thanks for your comments.👍

I have zoom brakes and other then going through pads every 100 miles or so, but it’s good to know how to bleed them

You shouldn't be going through the pads that quickly. You may need an adjustment on your brakes. You also want to make sure your using sintered brake pads and not organic. Thanks for watching.👍

I have zoom on my Aventon adventure.... same pads in great condition 1,580 miles. Something is wrong with your bike...

@@alloutbikes I have since taken a class on disc brakes maintenance and I have learned how to correctly adjust them and it is a great improvement on the longevity of the brakes pads , it’s been brought to my attention that if I wasn’t “racing” on the streets every time I went for a ride the brakes would last a lot longer ! They were right.going 22 mph every place instead of 32mph and acting like it’s a time trial race has greatly improved the overall longevity of the pads

how brake fluid get dirty/ may be theres a leak? or original oil was dirty. its not like a car , high temp. oil.

The seals in the brake wear with use causing contamination. Also water can slowly get in. My friend and I were riding downhill he was using Hayes brakes that use DOT4 brake fluid and his brake fluid boiled locking up his brakes.

You may still have air in your brake. Try bleeding it again but make sure your turning the bike and handlebars different angles to try to work any air pockets out. Goodluck.👍

so with this being a customer build,did they have to jump through the same hoops you did to bleed the brakes? watching you work,it seems the bike companies are emmulating the car industry, in making bikes repair/ maintinace less user friendly. do you see yourself expanding to offer e-bikes for sale in your shop at some point?.... i know too many questions..... this was an interesting video and i would share it, but don't do fb,twit,tictoc,insta. look for you on friday. stay well

The customer didn't jump through any hoops. As for making the bikes non serviceable..... Nahh. They just chose a cheaper brake they thought would work and it's not bad. It's just that the brake has tons of corners that air can hide in and Zoom has zero customer service. I tried to contact Zoom 2 weeks ago and still have not heard from them. We are planning to sell Ebikes. We just need to get our ducks in a row. Ebikes are expensive and the shop needs to get in a better position to make that purchase. Thank you. Sorry. It was a last minute video. The customer was coming right back so I did it the best I could in the short time I had. I will try to do a more detailed version next time.

My Sondors came with Zoom hydraulic brakes. Nothing but problems. I bought quad piston Zoom brakes pretty much the same junk. Even when I put the bike upside down I lose brake pressure. I call them Doom brakes now🤪

You may have air getting into your system due to a leak in one of the seals. Here is how you fix the brakes. First take the brakes off the bike. This is the first and most important step. Take the brakes to the closest trashcan and throw them straight to the bottom of the can. Then get you some Hayes, Shimano, Tektro or just about any other respectable brand. Step three. Install your brakes (Hayes is good) and your done. I hope this helps. Goodluck.👍

@@alloutbikes That's it. I just bled them again it's good maybe for a week. The Tektro brakes on my mountain bike are zero maintenance besides occasional pad change.
