Excellent tutorial - quite thorough on a some times confusing and little understood subject (Blend modes). Good to discover Affinity Photo equals or exceeds a comparable procedure in Photoshop. You have swayed me closer to using Affinity when I get my new computer.

I am a little slower than you in my thought process and it would help me if you could develop an example so that all the blend mode and cog wheel options could be experimented with on the same image. That would help me see their value because I work on only one image at a time. Thank you again for your knowledge

One of the most unique feature of Affinity, and it was never explicitly tutorialized until V2 hits the market. Oh well... Anyway, here's my summery of this: For current layer ``` C ``` with alpha ``` C_a ```, all layer below ``` B ```, opacity setting ``` o ``` and blend method ``` b() ```, Fill Opacity ``` f ```: adjust the opacity of CURRENT LAYER, BEFORE blending. ``` R1 = C , R1_a = C_a*f ``` Source Layer Ranges ``` s ```: adjust the tonal range opacity of CURRENT LAYER, AFTER blending. ``` R2 = b(R1)*o*s , R2_a = R1_a*o*s ``` Underlying Composition Ranges ``` u ```: adjust the tonal range opacity of ALL LAYER BELOW, and alpha blend it AFTER blending. ``` R = B*u+(R2*R2_a+B*(1-R2_a))*(1-u) ``` ``` R ``` would be the final blend result. Meanwhile, Blend Gamma is the power factor applied to ``` C ``` and ``` B ``` before blending, and the root factor applied to ``` R ``` before storing to memory. Antialiasing turns on or off of antialiasing for vector object. Coverage Map controls the alpha value of the antialiasing result according to the coverage of each pixel, and the Blend Gamma is also applied before storing the result alpha value. And my conclusion / suggestion to Affinity: this panel should be reordered like this: Blend Gamma --- Antialiasing | Coverage Map --- Fill Opacity | Source Layer Ranges | Underlying Composition Ranges And also, Fill Opacity should be a range graph as well, Underlying Composition Ranges should be flipped to be default to 0% if it has no effect.

Guys, can you provide the files for these tutorials. It's nice to be able to follow along with the tutorial files.

From the comments and from trying to search online, the FILL opacity is not found on the iPad app whenever the blend mode option is pulled up. Please add the fill opacity.

Can you explain more about what each blend mode does exactly?

We need a straight line option with the masking brush in the Develop persona, James! I know you don't use this part of Affinity Photo yourself but others do. Unfortunately they are not product experts.
