I like blessing box instead of care package, what we called them in my day. I’m 73 & I pick up things on sale continually & give my grandchildren’s mother a box ever time I see them. I figure with prices & shortages & four kids, anything useful is a blessing. I also made up individual bags of deodorant, pimple cream, tooth paste etc., for each child when they started school. I got some strange looks, but they came back asking if if I could buy more when they ran out. I felt so blessed!

Patara, this is great! I've got a 22 year old daughter out on her own in this terrible economy. We do a small blessing for her once a month, just $20 each month of necessities. Usually I get her food -- typically a protein like frozen fish filets, ground beef, chicken or staples like butter, eggs, olive oil, etc - something that I know will help her make ends meet and I have some peace knowing it will fill her belly. But, you've inspired me to do a bigger necessities box of household items for Christmastime! Thank you for sharing.

What a great idea! I bought a bunch of homemade fleece blankets back in August from a friend that were discontinued patterns for friends and family and were discounted. Those will be gifts this year, as utility costs continue to rise here. A couple will be used to cover my 2 chairs/ottomans in the living room that are old and tattered but still usable. (My rescue dog was destructive when I first got him.) But really, who doesn't want a soft blankie? My 4 grown/married kids will be here for my 70th birthday in 2 months and they can pick which ones they want, as there are many colors and patterns. There is just no way I can buy for 8 adults and 13 grandchildren, but they can share the blankies with their kids. It's not like they expect anything but it's something I felt compelled to do. I saved cash for a year to do it, and it may not suit their style. But it's the thought that counts, isn't it?

I always go to the Dollar Tree and get items like these for my younger brother's stocking. Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, deodorant, soap, shampoo, etc. Two years ago I also gave him toilet paper, beans, and rice! Then we usually give him cash or a Walmart gift card that he can put towards gas or groceries. He's is his early thirties now, but he's single and very much lives like a bachelor so he really appreciates these type of gift. Heck, as a nearly 38 year old married mom, I appreciate these type of gifts! I would much rather recieve something simple that I actually need and will use than some random crap that's going to sit around taking up space in my house I don't have and collecting dust.

Patara!!! I love this idea! One year, we were REALLY broke for Christmas. And this mama was struggling to find the joy in the season. I went to the store and wandered around, trying to figure out what to get the kids for their stockings. I got them each a box of cereal. We almost never have cereal at our house, so it was a treat! Plus, it took the need for mama to make breakfast on Christmas morning. The next year, the kids asked if Santa was bringing cereal again. Now, it's a Christmas tradition. Last year, the kids ALL asked for a can of SPAM. I'll be danged if Santa didn't bring a ton of SPAM. This year, they've asked for Vienna Sausages. (seriously, what's wrong with these kids).

That green cap scrubber is absolutely wonderful. For just a $ you can't beat their kitchen helpers. This is always a great gifting option. We did this for our 3 sons who all left for college on the same semester. They loved it! I've also done gift baskets for our "adulting children" with families of their own. This year is extremely tight for me so I'm baking banana breads from frozen bananas and ingredients from preparedness pantry.

From my pantry I was able to pull canned soups..tissues.. musinex..theraflu.. Gatorade halls cough drops.. crackers.. vitamin c tablets.. and some fresh bread plus his pie for Xmas. Having a pantry is a life saver in situations like these. We live rurally and it's priceless to be able to help someone in need.

My young adult son lives a while away so we only see him a few times a year but we always bring groceries, usually canned or shelf stable stuff. He gets an Aldi gift card for Christmas and some quality work gear, usually really warm stuff. He works outside at a ski resort and it really helps him to have one less thing he has to buy. Especially these days, our young adults need the basics. (well, all of us, really...I'd love some laundry detergent over another coffee mug or knick knack)
