Blind woman Julie Woods doesn’t shy away from challenges. In fact, she thrives on them. Since losing her sight Julie has travelled to more than 50 countries with her husband Ron. They have visited the world's seven modern wonders, and Julie has authored a book about her travels called ‘Wanderlust’. (With illustrations from Ron). She decided after going blind that she would say yes to every opportunity that presented itself; and focus on what she can do, rather than what she can’t. Julie is all about using her other four senses to enrich her personal experiences and interactions with others, leaving people with a more enlightened and inclusive view of disability. Julie and her friend Jo recently completed a challenge to walk every street in Dunedin. Now they have extended this project to include every street in the wider region.

As a complete wanderluster myself, I've often wondered what a blind person gets out of traveling as seeing the beauty is the best part for me, but this has changed that. I never thought about the smells and touch being just as amazing, esp when those senses are very heightened 🥰🥰 good on you Julie, you are AMAZING!

what a lovely woman Julie is. love her. I am visually impaired myself ... I love the saying: don't focus on what you can't do anymore but focus on what you can 👍 since my vision got way worse in 2018 I searched for something new I could do. so I started visually and blind tennis. and I love it. I well I think I am pretty good at it. I am so happy that I found something I am able to do

Her drive to do what she dreams of doing and enjoying every moment of it, not letting her limitations truly limit her is so amazing. She inspires me and I hope she keeps continuing to do what she loves. Her support network is great too. ❤️

I know you shouldn't 'feel sorry' for people with a disibility but I can't help but feel sorry for her. She's taking photos and is traveling the world but can't see what she's visiting nor can she see the photos she took/ had taken of her with people.

we imagine what everything looks like if we've seen before. we also have an uncanny memory, if we are strong blind people and out and about.

@@garnetsfriend But what about those who were born blind or lost their sight at a too young of an age to remember? Hearing people say 'wow look at that beautiful view/sunset' or 'aw such a cute baby!' and not being able to.

@@garnetsfriend I guess so. But it's knowing what you could have. Like I know what millionaires can have and I know what I'm missing out on because I can't afford that lifestyle. I miss what I've never had.

@@meghanh2511 That's a depressing way to live though. There are only so many hours in a day and only so many things our brain can even focus on at once so every one of us is missing a billion experiences we could be having. But sitting around thinking of the experiences we're NOT having is just wasting even more time and energy and missing out on even more of life.
