You might have noticed this video was made in April 2015, thats 9 years. He's gotten even better since then.

That's our animal. ( Goodness, he's so young in this one) Nowadays, part of his solo does demonstrate how he can use a looper . He shows each step. It feels like you're at a rave by the end of the demonstration. Thanks for the Home Free reactions.

People always asks how he breathes. We're not sure what planet he's from, but I think it's pretty clear his species has gills.

Love Adam. You really don’t miss instruments when you have Adam. I think he does do circular breathing but I still don’t understand it. I would pass out!!!

Great reaction, he actually can do the looper and in his new solo he uses the looper and just free styles and creates amazing arraignment on the fly. So talented. All the loops are of his voice at that moment.

I call him a vocal percussionist, and he's one of the best!

His college degree is in trumpet performance, so he does use circular breathing. He now uses a looper in part of his performance. There are many, many You Tube videos of him doing different variations on his performance over the years. The quality varies a lot, of course, but some of them are really good. For your next Home Free I recommend one of their recent originals, Playing With Fire.

Adam does have a looper in some of his more recent solos

This is the first of their Drum Solo videos posted -- you can tell by the red plaid shirt -- but its a routine he does every show so there are several more out there. And since they're each in front of alive crowd there can some differences in each one. The crowd's response to his everybody say one, say two routine for instance. In the later ones, starting around 2022 I think, Adam does use a looper so he can layer his voice, moving from and adding one sound over another over another. There's another funny bit that Home Free used to do that could change from show to show and has several version on youtube. It's called Guilty Pleasures. The one that's most likely to come up first is Guilty Pleasures HILARIOUSLY Derailed! The guys got the giggles and lost the script for a bit. I do recommend any of them.

Obviously the vocal percussion Adam does is essential to the HomeFree sound. But I think his energy, commitment and musically is equally important. He’s the only original member left and was studying trumpet at college when his older brother Chris formed the group at the end of 2000. Adam has a 10+ minute solo, with a looper to get multi tracks, in their recent concerts. At Christmas shows, it was inspired by “Carol of the Bells”. On this tour, they have brought back a perc only breakdown with all five of them making sounds in the middle of “Listen to the Music”. I have not seen a good recording of that or the one they used to do in the middle of “9 to 5”. I’m going to suggest either the live recording of “Sea Shanty Medley” or their recent version of “Life is a Highway”. Both are fun songs and fun videos of songs they released earlier. Same five as in “Man of Constant Sorrow”. Adam - Austin - Chance - Rob - Tim.

For the breathing, some of the sounds he's making are on in breaths to make the sound and others are on out breaths, so he interleaves between the two so he can keep going indefinitely

A lot of reactors hear the Jews harp in Man of Constant Sorrow and confuse it with a digeridoo, so no need to apologize. Great reaction and your smile and laughter is contagious.

Adam also learned to play a real drumset so his movements would be realistic. He also makes sounds while inhaling.

Some Home Free suggestions; Spiritual: How Great Thou Art. (This song has brought some reactors to tears and Adam sings in this one) R & B: End of the Road. (Yep, R&B and they kill this song. Rob goes to church) Romantic: When a Man Loves a Woman (Austin melts hearts in this one. Amazing) 5 Part Harmony (No beat boxing): Brothers in Arms. (Some jaw dropping harmonies here) Motown (sorta): Blue Ain't Your Color. ( The guys get dressed up and try some choreography) Country: Hillbilly Bone. (Lots of fun and nice Bass from Tim although he goes lower in other songs) Funny Medley: Butt's Remix and Country Fried Pop Medley. (They had fun with these) Christmas: Mary Did You Know. Collaboration: American Pie and Elvira. Patriotic: Tavelin Soldier, God Bless the U.S.A, and Land of the Free. Other Great Songs: In the Blood, My Church, Amazed, Folsom Prison Blues, and Fishin’ in the Dark / Down in the Boondocks.

Great reaction! IMO, Home Free is the best a capella group out there and Adam is a big part of my thinking. All the groups have great singers, but only one has Mr Rupp. I saw HF live within the last couple of years. They sounded pretty close to what you hear on YT. If they tour close to you, don't miss the chance to see them.

J - Home Free is a VERY DEEP rabbit hole! There's only one mistake you can make with this group -- listening to their cover of "Mayday" too soon. When you get there, you'll understand why it's best to listen to at least 6 other performances before "Mayday." Fortunately, that will be a pleasant task! 🙂 Here are some of their best: ----- - American Pie (performed with the original artist -- celebrating the 50th anniversary of the song.) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7ich72Vvr7He5s.html ----- - Brothers in Arms (sombre and moving cover of Mark Knopfler's song about war) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lamYd5WIz6qWpI0.html ----- - Crazy (cover of Patsy Cline's best known song...written by Willie Nelson) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g6pharGf0tespYU.html ----- - Elvira (performed together with original artists The Oak Ridge Boys) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jc2dbMqL2JfMias.html ----- - End of the Road (cover of the R&B hit by Boyz II Men) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9Jzhalyq9rOXXU.html ----- - God Bless the USA (performed with original artist Lee Greenwood plus the USAF "Singing Sergeants") kzfaq.info/get/bejne/idh9mdeem7HRY5s.html ----- -How Great Thou Art (a magnificent rendition of a great gospel song) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qr6Bo6d1yNiyXas.html ----- - Listen to the Music (this could be an upgrade of The Doobie Bros. original) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hcVnfLyT2rjLh4U.html ----- - Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash hit featuring two basses - Tim Foust (HF) and Avi Kaplan (Pentatonix) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZtJjl9Z5qLnHqIk.html ----- - Stand By Me (one of the best songs from the Doo Wop era!!) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdmgl6lipuDLoqM.html ----- - The Gambler (cover of Kenny Rogers hit that won a Grammy and sparked 5 movies!) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kMCBi81osJPDYYE.html ----- - When a Man Loves a Woman (1966 original by Percy Sledge is soul music) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9apmrOey621pok.html (4.5 million views!)

Yeah this is an old vid. He does use a looper now as their songs in recordings have gotten quite layered. But he is even way better now. Seen them 3 times in the past 4 years. Amazing group. Probably one of the best beatboxers in the world and he sings tenor too.

Just FYI, you said he used his voice *and feet occasionally* to make the sounds... No feet involved. 😉 All vocally produced sounds. 😳🤯 He was just simulating the feet moving as if he was hitting the kick. 👍 This guy's a total beast! There's actually SO much more he can do. Just difficult to fit it all into one set! P.S. He's an accomplished trumpet player. I'm positive that helps him tremendously with the breath control! 🎺

Onomatopoeia is a word that sounds like, or reminiscent of, the thing or sound it refers to. e.g. Buzz, hiss, murmur, meow.

What Tim said at the beginning of the vid is only partly true now, depending on your point of view. They do use a looping machine onstage in Man of Constant Sorrow, because even Adam can't do fake drums, fake harmonica and fake swamp animal sounds all at the same time. But yes, Adam is tremendous. The guy in the cowboy hat is Adam's brother Chris Rupp, the founder of Home Free. He's now gone solo, and also performs with impromptu groups, often including their sister Tristin. He has a couple of KZfaq channels.

Some of his sounds are exhales and some are inhales. Adam is considered a vocal percussionist as well as a beatboxer. On the Man of Constant Sorrow video, Chance does the mouth harp. The video is not on their direct channel because it is a fan recording. There are a lot of those out there, a lot of them really good.

Wasn't that great! Love Adam Rupp & his insane talent. He is the best out there in my opinion. He simulates the sounds of a drum perfectly. Many drummers have commented on how good he is. He sounds so realistic. His breath control must be crazy. I heard he makes the sounds both while inhaling & exhaling. This was a few years ago & hard to believe but he is even better now. Adam is the glue that holds Home Free together. He is their secret weapon which other a cappella groups can't match.

@@flowersafterrainfall Unless you are being sarcastic, I think you are only half right on what you are saying. I think most people could learn to beatbox. However, it takes a lot of work. Looking at Adam you can see that he has developed noticeable muscles all around his mouth, jaw, and lips - many of the sounds he makes require a good bit of pressure and unusual flexing, and as bodies do, his has responded to build as needed. I am sure pianists also have muscley hands and wrists. It comes with a lot of work. And that is really the point that I had foremost. It's not just that anyone could do it. It's that he practices and performs a lot. There's a tale in the classical community of a woman gushing to a pianist how she wishes she could play like he did, and his reply was 'You can - it just takes 30 years of practice.' (paraphrase). People underappreciate how much work at the basic elements of a craft it takes to become really good at it.
